Rose rolled her eyes at him. “The universe was not punishing me. Some Loser Professor unintentionally scared me—” she narrowed her eyes at him. “or was it unintentional?”
“I’m sure Some Loser Professor would be very hurt by that nickname if they were present,” Teddy replied, a chuckle on his lips. “It was karma’s intention, not mine. My intention is to just stop you lot from wreaking havoc, which -- is a difficult job.”
“I’m just… These numbers don’t add up.” She sighs handing over her assignment, notes and textbook.
Taking all the materials from Alexis, Teddy glanced over the page, taking a few moments to absorb all the information. “Well, uh --” he leant over for Alexis’ quill, scratching out a number she’d written down. “You solved the first bit wrong, which explains why the rest seems to impossible. I think... you may have used the wrong proof for it, so -- check that, and once you get that right, everything else will fall into place.”
“Well it’s a good thing I do then.” She laughs. “Oh that sounds like fun, breaking the rules.” She jokes, one hand holding the book, the other on her hip.
“Yeah, breaking the rules is great while you’re doing it -- not so much when you get caught.” Teddy spoke from experience, remembering the bollockings that Aunt Ginny and his grandmother would give him. He still blamed James. “Are you telling me you’ve never broken a rule?” Teddy raised an eyebrow, looking over at Bitsy.
“You mean do I have permission?” Cesar restated. “Well, Professor, I guess that would really depend on your definition of ‘permission’. As in, shouldn’t knowledge be free to everyone instead of roped off and restricted? I think it was Socrates who said ‘the only evil is ignorance,’ after all.”
“I’ve seen adults get nightmares from books in here, so... I’m going to support them staying away from kids for now.” Teddy knew censorship was a dangerous line to draw, but some of these books weren’t safe for young minds. One of the first things he’d done as a teacher was browse the restricted section, but his own stomach had turned at some of the content. “Maybe we’ll have this debate in our next DADA class. But -- for now. No note, no access.”
“Oh c’mon Teddy,” Lily groaned as she placed the book back on the shelf. “Does this mean I have to go back to bed?”
“It’s 2am, Lil,” Teddy replied, the corners of his lips quirking into an amused smile. “So yes, back to bed is probably a good idea.”
“So you agree, right?” James wore a serious face. “That we need to do…something. Whatever that may be.”
Teddy tilted his head a little at the expression on James’ face. He knew his brother -- and he knew what he was planning. While Teddy trusted James with his life, he wasn’t sure he trusted James with his own -- and that wasn’t a risk he was willing to take. “We do -- but we can’t go vigilante, and -- when I say we, I mean the teachers, and aurors, not -- students, not again. Never again. -- and not you. You, and Albus, and Lily, and everyone else -- you need to stay safe. Please.”
“Oh, I read it. I just chose to ignore it. But that’s okay! It’s okay to break the rules for the greater good, am I right?”
“And which cause is this for the greater good of?”
“It’s nearly Halloween. Who should I become this year? The Minister for Magic? Captain of the Canons? Aunt Ginny?”
It seemed that every day, there was only bad news in the paper. The world was certainly getting worse, that’s for sure. “Aunt Hermione’s probably giving the ministry hell about all of this right now.” He said, easily picturing his aunt storming through the Ministry of Magic, demanding that something be done. “I’ll help, in any way I can.”
Teddy nodded, doing his best to smile. “Yeah -- no doubt.” He’d seen his aunt in her righteous tempers, and had tried to learn from her how best to get the job done. “Yeah? I -- don’t know what we can do yet, but... anything is better than this. This is... senseless.”
“Is that what that sign said?”
“Yes. Yes, it is. Do you have a note?”
“Would you believe disobeying signs is in my blood?”
“I mean -- that’s not untrue,” Teddy replied, a small smile on his face. “What are you looking for? If it’s DADA related, I can allow it...” While still a Potter, Albus was the most introverted of the three. Teddy did his best to encourage his youngest brother where he could. “Just don’t make it anything too dark, okay?”
Rose was so into her book, she didn’t even realize someone else was in the restricted area with her. When Teddy spoke—it caught her off guard and caused her to bang the back of her head against the bookshelf she was leaning against. “Ow!” she exclaimed, reaching to rub the back of her head. “Is that what that sign is for? I always thought it was more of a suggestion.”
Teddy couldn’t help but chuckle as Rose hit her head, shaking his own a little. “That’s called karma, y’know,” he teased, moving to stand by her shoulder to look at the book in her hands. “Definitely a rule and not a suggestion. Or else the universe wouldn’t punish you like that.”
“It wasn’t but darn it. Guess I’ll just have to spend more evening set up in the library.”
“Just remember to take regular breaks and try not to get too bogged down. And drink lots of water. And -- eat chocolate.”
“Yes. Definitely one more thing to look forward to at Christmas.” Molly was teasing him , but she knew that Teddy balanced his image pretty well. He commanded respect even when he wasn’t a teacher at Hogwarts, so it was nothing new to the family when he joined the staff of the school. “Hey, I’m the good one. When am I ever in trouble? Grandma Molly loves me. I mean, we do hav ethe same name and everything.”
“Yeah, but saying you’re the good one is like saying... you’re the healthiest chocolate in the box. And any name-based favourtism is just unfair.” Teddy replied, an amused smile on his face. “This is the benefit of being an only child. I am my grandmother’s favourite. For sure. Although she is quite fond of Albus...”
Louis looked up quickly, not realising at first who was speaking, but was relieved when he saw Teddy. “Sorry, Teddy, I was only looking for somewhere nice to lay down - they’re are quite a few rowdy second years I was intending avoiding just a little while back.”
“Not sure this is the best place for a nap... Madam Pince is pretty great at making you regret everything good in life.” Teddy nodded, frowning a little at Louis. “If you need a break, you can use my office, y’know. Or go nap in my chambers. Just don’t eat my biscuits and we’re all good.”
“Oh, I can read.” Lily placed a book she had in her hands back on the shelves. “I’ve never been in here before.”
“That’s ‘cause you’re not mean to be,” Teddy replied, nudging Lily with his shoulder. “Unless you’ve got a note, you’ve gotta go. Dems the rules.”
Elisabith heard a voice and peaked her head out. “Don’t worry I have a note from the teacher.” She teases her fellow co-worker. “I’m going to assume that there has been trouble with students coming in here?”
Teddy raised his eyebrows when he saw that it was Bitsy he was talking too, a slight blush colouring his cheek. “Well -- good. You need permission to come in here,” he joked, taking a book off a shelf to look at. “Sorta. Plus -- I grew up with the Weasley-Potters. I’m used to people doing things they shouldn’t. It’s kinda... genetic.”
