pairings that you like in theory but everyone gets them wrong?
Way more common for me is a ship i get in theory but don't actually care about and/or still dislike
But for a ship I actually like but still think people are often wrong about the big one that comes to mind is Ty Lee/Azula from ATLA
I think they're sooooo fucking tragic and compelling and the potential for that completed narrative arc of them getting together post-series is really strong. But! I think a lot of people write them badly bc they take Ty Lee at face value as an airhead idiot who's a total pushover all the time. Or they try to shave down Azula's rough edges and ignore the fucked up power dynamics involved!
But the way I think they're most interesting is acknowledging that yes Azula has and freely abuses a massive amount of power over Ty Lee in their friendship, she is extremely fucking emotionally vulnerable compared to Ty Lee. Azula needs her in a way Ty Lee has never and will never need Azula. This is why the Boiling Rock betrayal fucks Azula's shit up so much. She literally doesn't have anyone else. She's a terrible friend, but Mai and Ty Lee are the only people she cares about outside of her family and they're the only people who care about her.
And moreover, Azula is so socially inept and Ty Lee is so savvy there, I think their actual dynamic while still toxic had a lot of opportunity for Ty Lee to manipulate and play things to he advantage. It's not healthy and nowhere near equal, but its absolutely at its most interesting when Ty Lee has agency and her own ways of exploiting their dynamic. Underneath I still want them to care about each other and mean something to one another - they're childhood friends for a reason. But I think they should both be allowed to be a little fucked up and scheming and desperate in their own ways
