HarperÂ
It was hard not to be nervous sitting in a diner across from a demon, on top of discussing how to take down the demon that almost killed you and left your life in shambles. Having Boden next to her did bring her some comfort and as she moved closer and felt his warmth she remembered their relationship, the way he held her and comforted her. She had to shake her head slightly because she was going down memory lane and not staying in the present. Sipping her tea she absently strummed her fingers against the mug relieved that Val seemed to find humor and not offense in her comments.Â
She was also relieved that she did not need to relive her experience, for the diner would not be the place to do that. “The one bad apple can be true for humans as well,” she said with lightness to her tone. Nodding as he gave a brief explanation of the levels of demons, something she had no idea about but also could have gone her whole life without knowing. This was not to be the case though, but that was not Val’s fault and once again she reminded herself that he shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of others. Harper watched through her lashes the exchange between the two men. Unable to stop the small smile at Boden and his need to protect her still she hid it with her mug.Â
Putting the warmth down for a moment she nodded, it was reassuring to hear that Val was in this whether he got a soul out of it or not. “I needed to hear that, and appreciate it. I trust you because of Boden, but I will hold you to your words of helping to destroy this being. I’m sure you sensed me as much as I sensed you coming in here. You know I’m not to trifle with.” Keeping her green orbs locked on his she gave a single nod, it was not a threat but a statement. Since being taken and used she spent all her time focused on becoming stronger and never to be caught weak again. Harper knew she could hold her own, and this would be the true test. She would only be pretending to be weak to lure him in. Though still nervous and seemingly anxiety filled, in the base of her foundation was her power. Of course knowing you are strong and having to prove it were two different things and hence the anxiety and nerves.
The moment Boden touched her knee she felt a surge of her own power fill her, and while she’d been cold a warmth radiated from him into her skin and filled her. Smiling absently she put one hand under the table and rested it on his, interlocking her fingers and squeezing, giggling softly when he returned the action and then moved his hand. The smile stayed a bit more as he put his hand behind her, always protecting her. Had they been alone, despite the time between she would have lay against his side, resting her head on his broad chest. She couldn’t help but once again miss those moments.
“Maybe when this is over you can share those stories, I’d love to hear them.” If Boden trusted him, then Harper did as well, completely. Raising her eyes to his she looked into those orbs and saw the man she had fallen for all those years ago. Unable to speak she nodded again, it was all she needed to hear. If she reflected wanting him back and still caring then she saw it there as well, and it soothed her more than she could express.Â
Staying in the moment a second longer before dropping her gaze and focusing on the task at hand. Sighing she took a sip of tea, “I mean he can’t feel how strong I’ve become. I’m going to have to bleed a little, literally to call him and I’m going to have to let some darkness in. I know how much I can take, but he doesn’t. He will think it’s winning and I need him to believe that.” Pursing her lips the cold was creeping in again. “The thing is, it will physically take a lot out of me and I might not be able to fight him off, which means someone else will.” Turning to Val, “Which is where you and Boden come in. You’ll be taking him down. Once he’s down and I can push the darkness out, then I’ll finish him. Can you two handle that?”

It was nice to see the witch pull herself up by the bootstraps and exude confidence over the power he could feel while sitting across from the pretty young woman. Power and confidence was such an aphrodisiac and watching the switch take place before his eyes was remarkable. Moments ago he wondered if they could even use her as bait for the demon but now she spoke of being the one to destroy him. A genuine smile took over his features; a rarity for the demon. Gazing over to Boden he gave a reassuring nod symbolizing their ideas were aligning accordingly.Â
Listening, to the plan she’d already worked out he leaned in resting his elbows on the table top. It was risky to put herself out there like that but he stayed silent as she continued. There was a fire in those green eyes which burned with the thought of revenge. He knew the look all too well. Holding his tongue he was tempted to ask what did the demon do to warrant such an illicit response. His friend had given a rather whitewashed version undoubtedly. Something truly dark must have occurred. When questioned directly rather or not he could handle bringing the demon to its knee’s he nodded. “Yes, I can definitely handle it.” Standing up he looked at both Boden before Harper for a moment. “I’ll be waiting for the call.” With no other words, he slipped from behind the booth and dropped a twenty on the table before exiting the small diner.Â
Knowing the confidence Harper emitted should make him feel better; it somewhat made Boden nervous. It wasn’t that he enjoyed seeing her weak or scared–it was just that he knew how easily one could get caught up in emotion. God, knows he done so for years. Thinking about the demon was something which consumed him for so long. It was only now he was finally able to sort out his emotions from the task that he felt ready and was ultimately the reason he showed up on her doorstep with the idea, to begin with. Watching her beautiful profile as she spoke he moved in closer a tad, feeling a protective pull before placing a reassuring hand on her knee just below the table.Â
When Val stood Boden cleared his throat and answered accordingly, “You’ll hear from us sooner rather than later.” He had little doubt she’d want to get to work straight away. As the demon walked away he offered another reassuring squeeze of her soft skin just above her knee and let go. Honestly, he shouldn't have taken such familiar comforts with her but it was hard not to fall into it. After all, she’d meant something to him and that was something he simply couldn’t deny. Waiting to the demon exited the door he turned his attention back to Harper and refrained the urge to kiss her temple. Instead, his fingers balled into fist resisting the urge to keep touching his once lover.Â
“I know you’ve had time to practice and build up your gifts but you don’t have to do so much.” Biting the inside of his cheek he knew that came out all wrong so he tried again, “Sorry, I just mean we’re going to be there to help so you don’t have to spread yourself so thin.” The thought of the demon hurting her again was too much too bear. He’s seen the aftermath last time and wasn’t going to let it happen. Feeling like he was digging himself in more he added, “It’s just that I’m worried is all that you’re trying to do too much.”Â
Those years spent separating out emotions were beginning to unravel at the seams.Â

Menewa&Valentine: A Visit
Closed Starter// @overtureofchaos MenewaÂ
A nice couple had just exited the store and Valentine was all smiles as his chain purse was not that much heavier. Did they really need all those supplies–nope, but he’d be dammed if they didn’t fall for his song and dance hook, line, and sinker. Word had already spread that gold could be found on the untouched land which sent settlers flocking. It was something he doubted but still, he was willing to benefit from others misinformation and misfortune. Walking to the back of the store he tucked the small purse into a safe and went back to straightening the inventory. The smile never leaving his face. If people back at home could see him now they’d hardly believe the upward mobility he managed to obtain and the life he’d set up for himself here. Valentine Smith was more than the convict number tattooed across his forearm–he was someone here in the small up and coming port.
The small bell rang catching his attention but he kept on his task. There was no reason to look up. He could tell it was Menewa by the weight of the man’s step against the floorboards. The smile slowly faded a bit. While he’d always had the gift to swindle Menewa wasn’t one to believe in smoke and mirrors. Valentine figured this out early in their dealings and learned to adjust. There was little choice than to be as cordial as possible for he knew his livelihood here depended on it. Within feet, he finally looked up just as the other man cast a shadow over him, “What do I owe the pleasure?” Placing a forced smile across his features he folded his hands in front of him. Doubtful it was a social call– it more than likely had to do with business.Â
Leaning slightly he made a show of trying to peek behind the wall of the man before he asked, “No pelts today?”Â

Her lips pulled into a smile at the way that. he repeated her name as if sounding it out. She nodded as he spoke, confirming it. She wondered if he had heard it before but while she was vain she didn’t have enough vanity to ask. Her mother would have and if any of the girls were up they probably would have too. She didn’t teach the little ones to fear…well anything. Fear led to all sorts of unjustifiable things and it was better for them to try and understand a demon then try to destroy him because he was different. Different like them. But not like them at the same time. Â
She laughed lightly as she poured the wine and he told her the truth about his intentions.  “It does have a quality of energy. I will give you that.” She didn’t mention that the energy was her own as well as the properties.  “But you might have found a few snags in your plan if you had attempted to open any sort of portal here. Sadly I’m afraid it is home so it gets rather…jealous when other places try to encroach.” She said the words with a pleasant smile though she was serious.  Â
Handing the blood red glass out to him the crimson wafted against the inside, coating the thin glass. Her eyes moved to the hall at his question, a little smile coming to her lips before she looked back at him. “My you really have never heard of my family or this place. My mother would have been appalled. She liked to think that she had built up Wallas into quite the name.” Taking a sip from her own glass she shook her head. “Tonight? I share it with little witches and a demon. Tomorrow it might be a vampire and a warlock. After that it might be something I have never heard of.” She eyed him with the little smile on her lips, trying to read his reaction. “We’re a sanctuary for the…well the magical.” She tried, seeing as how she didn’t actually label them as different. “But for the most part its me and the young witches that I raised here when their families cast them out. Mortals can be very afraid.” Â
Littles witches–suddenly those stirrings from down the hall made all the sense in the world. This woman was a caretaker of sorts of the land and her people. It was definitely something to respect and admire. Taking a mouthful of wine down he smiled graciously before excusing himself, “Please don’t be offended that I’m not familiar with the Wallas legacy.” The demon paused briefly when he heard sporadic giggling coming from the down the hall. Turning his attention back to Trinity before he admitted, “You see I’m not from around here.”Â
Letting his eyes drift over the white gown the witch wore he nodded in agreement, “Mortals fear what they do not understand and can never obtain. Granted, they’ve many great attributes their response to the unexplained isn’t one of them.” Setting the long stem glass on the table he wasn’t sure he should ask a lady such a question but such etiquette never stopped him prior, “How long have you been tied to the land?”Â
Picking up the glass and bottle of wine he suggested with a gentle nod they take their conversation back to the living room. Turning he began to walk down the hall when he taunted the sweet witch, “Don’t think I didn’t catch that ever so subtle invitation to stay the night.” Without so much as looking back, he walked through the white halls with a smile. Granted, he wouldn’t be returning home tonight he didn’t mind so much given the present company.Â
