Basic Income: A Way Forward for the Left?

The idea of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been championed by both progressives and conservatives. Not everyone on the left, however, is behind the idea. Is the UBI a means of redistributing wealth, attacking poverty and protecting workers from technological displacement? Or will basic income serve to advance an agenda of austerity and privatization? It’s … not great.

There are some good points in this article, but some assumptions too that I don’t agree with. Social Security, for example, is entirely funded by worker contributions, so why should UBI touch that? Likewise disabled veterans benefits... that is monetary compensation for injuries sustained during active duty, it compensates for a breach of contract which enlistees sign that says the armed forces will return the enlistee to civilian life in as good as or better than the condition in which they enlisted. It’s written right there in the enlistment contract.

As far as healthcare goes, there is no good reason to continue to support healthcare insurance companies’ medical care for-profit model where they (not doctors) decide who can get or be denied medical care. With public universal healthcare, as in other developed OECD nations which was not taken into account in this article, the government is free to negotiate costs for drugs and services, resulting in lower costs and funding savings. Universal healthcare gets insurance corporations out of the business of deciding who lives and who dies, and the savings in premiums alone would be worthwhile.

Also, OECD assumes that federal poverty guidelines are set at 50% of median income. That isn’t so in the United States. $12,000/year is NOT 50% of median income. In the latest available figures from 2015, 50% of median income in the U.S. is $27,887.50... or $2,324/month... not $1,000/month. Now we’re talking a whole different scenario, right?

There are, literally, dozens of other possibilities for creating and funding a UBI that would not penalize the elderly, the disabled, etc. No UBI proposal is set in stone, this is simply an idea that people are discussing, so all reasonable ideas should be welcome into the discussion. Don’t assume UBI means people will suffer, it doesn’t have to be that way unless your plan is purposefully designed to fail spectacularly.
