Welcome to the New School Year---Old and New Business
To all the new students, welcome to the new school year from our Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Graduate Student Association (ChEMS GSA). My name is Nicole Ing, and I'm the ChEMS GSA President for this school year. To returning students, welcome back again (or if you've been here all summer, hi).
This year, we really want to really encourage student participation in the GSA, so we'll be posting all our minutes and our meeting dates on our GSA website (http://ucichemsgsa.tumblr.com/). We want everyone to feel welcome to come participate at our meetings, and because we're here to represent the graduate student body in our department, we really need to hear from you. We want to be able to address your opinions, concerns, and criticisms in an open dialogue and relaxed environment, so please check the website regularly and drop by when you can :) Notes from meetings over the summer will be posted there shortly :)
This year, for the first time ever, we will also be hosting a Graduate Student Panel for new students to ask older grads about things like picking your rotations, ways to get involved in grad school, choosing classes, finding labs, etc. If you're a returning student and you're interested in participating as a panelist, please email me back at [email protected] :) It will be held September 29(Tuesday) at 1pm in EH 2430. If you're a new student, I'll talk about the event again during Orientation Day (September 25).
All ChEMS grad students and labmates are invited to the ChEMS Orientation Day Reception onFriday, September 25, at 3:30PM outside of EH 2430. Come drop by to meet our new friends and get some drinks and food!
Lastly, as a follow-up to the summer elections for the student-elected visiting speakers, we are still waiting to hear replies from our first speaker, Angela Belcher, from MIT, and our runner-up speakerTim Swager, who is also from MIT. The results from the summer runner-up rankings, tallied by the Chemical Engineering Student Faculty Ambassador, Todd Thorson, are as follows:
Votes were weighted 3-2-1 points for 1st-2nd-3rd votes, respectively.
Thank you and hope to see you all soon!
