The late 19th century was a dangerous time for merchant & passenger ships along America's coastline. In response to frequent, devastating shipwrecks, the U.S. government formalized the United States Life-Saving Service in 1878, which later merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the modern U.S. Coast Guard.
