finnuf:
up he went, down he didn’t
finn just looks up into the tree, shielding his eyes from the sun with one hand so he can continue to get a good look at the unfolding situation. granted, not much is happening. the guy is very much still stuck up there, but at least he offers an explanation for why they’re encountering this problem in the first place.
finn narrows his eyes in confusion. why is there jewelry in a tree? maybe some raven laguz stole it and stashed it up there? he doesn’t see laguz much around these parts, but maybe times have changed in the past year since he’s been away, and gleerium enacted their influence on his old home. he doubts it; it’s only been a year, after all, but you never know. either way, he hopes this guy finds his adventure up the dying tree to get the jewelry worthwhile by the time he finally gets out of it.
luckily, the other man chooses to listen to finn, and drops down off the branch, still holding onto it with his hands. the distance to fall is significantly less now. want to catch me? no, not particularly. he could try, or he could just teach this guy how to fall with the lowest chance of injury so he can deal with this situation by himself should it ever happen again. “how about i teach you how to fall well?” he decides, but he better make it quick, because he doesn’t know how long the other man can hold on. “you want to land on both feet, and try to bend your knees as you land. it’ll absorb some of the impact. try to relax as much as you can, too. your body should naturally react to the fall.”
his ability to annoy was great, but since he was a man who didn’t need the help of others, he didn’t need to worry about annoying others, correct? because the downsides to annoying are things such as people not wanting to be your friend, not wanting to help you, and rare needs none of those things. that’s at the very least the idea he’s managed to get into his head, for him it seems logical, like a math puzzle who is solved correctly and elegantly, rare however might forget he doesn’t know logic and he’s also incredibly bad at math. if life was some great math equation rare would've failed long ago, but he’s lucky that things can’t only go one way when one specific thing happens. but though life isn’t math, it still kind of feels like he’s failed at it, or at least he can’t figure it out.
but while things can’t only go one certain way when you do something, rather often you should be able to at least have a good guess on outcomes, rare doesn’t have that. he’s annoying, he loves to be annoying, and he’ll never ever consider the consequences. he takes another look at his hand and the jewelry, for a guy who refuses help often and kind of lacks survival skill needs, he sure does like testing himself. he does know how to steal and betray, but that’s not much help when it’s about being stuck in a tree.
“you think learning how to fall while i’m i’m holding myself up is the perfect timing? i know i might’ve seemed strong, tall and handsome while i was sitting on that branch, but i’m just tall and handsome” he chuckles a little at himself. “ah pleeease~~~ catch me! i’m not that heavy!” he truly does not wish to be the one breaking bones today. “this is a one in a life time opportunity stranger! getting to hold me in a bridal carry, that’s a chance nobody else has ever gotten!” wow rare sure did speak a lot, and he hadn’t listened to a word when the other was giving his lessons on how to fall.
