background: — a defiant and idealistic kid from busan that dropped everything back home to pursue his music dream in seoul — not gonna lie, his face takes him places which is how he landed an idol trainee contract with an entertainment company in seoul back when he had just turned 20 (he got scouted when he was taking out the trash lol) — he never wanted to be an idol but it was his only chance to do music and break into the concentrated market and so he grabbed it despite his parents’ adamant disapproval  — without even graduating high school, he moved to seoul and started his trainee life, which he unfortunately (and expectedly) was not cut out for (basically hated the music he was made to do there) — he eventually left the company and took on several odd jobs to get by, refusing to return home with nothing to his name (yes, another hothead with pride issues...) — currently working at a street fashion store in hongdae, where he also resides (finally saved up enough to rent a humble apartment) — has been working full-time at the street fashion store for awhile now but is starting to work part-time again as his music career begins taking off — when he isn’t working, he’ll be making music and he’d even go as far as to stay up all night just to work on his music (if you catch him dozing off at work the next day, you know why) — he started out on soundcloud but never made it far, only starting to blow up after he uploaded a video of himself rapping on youtube mid last year — so while he’s been doing music for a couple of years now (est. 2018), he’s only starting to really gain traction recently, and yes, probably because of his looks — at this point, he’s starting to get gig offers and he’s going from casual busking along the streets to actually performing at underground clubs and whatnot — I’d say 2021 will be a year of new beginnings and a lot of firsts for him, with the light at the end of his tunnel finally starting to peek through — in the near future, he’ll also be getting offers to sign with major entertainment companies and this is probably one of the main conundrums he’ll face, unsure of delving into another contract that might not be suited for him  personality: — a joker and charmer with words being his best weapon (lyrically too, his lyrics are better than his beats tbh) — his playful demeanour could come off a little facetious and childish but underneath that is a boy that works really hard — humour is his defence mechanism, basically jokes everything off — claims to have started music as a joke but really, he works so fucking hard for it — insanely passionate about music but kind of hides it or downplays it in fear of failure and not being good enough (which is something he genuinely believes, despite his occasional narcissistic jokes) — knows he’s good looking and uses it to his advantage but secretly feels insecure about how this might just be the only thing he’s “good at” — as much as he enjoys his rising popularity that came with his face reveal, he worries people only like him for his looks — probably fun and easy to be around, the kind of person you can do stupid things with or have deep conversations with at 3 am (most people get surprised at how insightful he can be as he never seems to take anything seriously) — pretty reckless and hotheaded but when he fucks up, he owns up to it and takes full responsibility of it (y’know that kid in class that admits to their mistake and ends up being the only one punished? that’s him) — kind of like an endearing puppy, always excited and eager to stay close to the people he likes — also smiles a lot and there’s no denying he has a pretty cute smile which he uses to his favour — might come across a little flirty but is no heartbreaker, quite the opposite in fact, probably gets his heart broken more often (this is an open call for people to come break his heart!)

plots or any development you’d like to see for your character: — as mentioned above, people that’ll break his heart (exes, first love, new flames, whatever) might I also add: he likes tsunderes and people that are hard to impress because he knows he can impress them — people that look down on him and think that his music ain’t shit and that he only has fans because of his looks (probably true tbh) also, the fact that he was an idol trainee before could give them more reason to dislike him, they could think that he’s only going indie because the idol life didn’t work out for him — mentors that see potential in him to be better and guides him to improve, basically seniors in the industry/producers that do not just see him as a pretty face and want to bring out whatever potential they see in him (a parent or older sibling figure maybe?)  — a fan that seems to really love him but he comes to realise they barely listen to his music and only talks about his looks (could also work this into a romantic relationship like someone that only likes him for his looks and nothing else, pretends to be interested in his music but probably has only heard it like once) — likewise, someone that enjoyed his music from his soundcloud days, before he had even revealed his face so they had no idea how he looked like and maybe they started talking and formed a connection, with looks never being in the picture? (I can see this being a relationship he really treasures and holds close to his heart) — friends he can do stupid things with; people that not only spur him on in his bad decisions but also join him in making equally as bad, if not worse decisions — someone he’s a fan of, basically someone he really simps for and don’t say I didn’t warn you, he can be pretty shameless about it (oh and you could even make use of him knowing how much of a simp he is for you) — opposite dynamics: he’s playful, jovial, maybe even a little childish and well, you’re the exact opposite but somehow it works out)  — more than friends, less than lovers because I kinda really dig this trope lol hold his hand and tell him he’s your best friend because best friends cuddle each other to sleep right — customers that frequent the street fashion store he works at or even one-time customers that left an impression on him (maybe you stole something when he was dozing off from staying up all night or maybe you met with an awkward wardrobe malfunction that you needed his help with and yes, he’ll pretend he doesn’t see your butt cheek sticking out...) — people he’s met from his many other part-time jobs from before (chimaek restaurant servers, internet cafe and karaoke part-timers, anyone?) — fellow soloists he can collaborate with!

ugrina​:

breathless, as she reaches the top of the hill, shouldering her way into the brightly lit, flourescent box. she knocks over a packet f batteries and a few bags of gummy bears as she grabs up a pack of kakao friends decorated bandaids- pointedly two thousand won more expensive than the plain brown ones. “success.” she looks at the fridge in the back, squinting a little. “should we go grab some more soju? cass? they have those fizzy ciders.” 

woong always wanted a sister. he had always wanted someone he could look up to, care for and protect, despite all the stubborn claims that she “did not need a kid to protect her”. he likes watching her try to stand on her own two feet (literally), yet failing terribly and having to lean on him anyway. could it be the illusion of feeling needed that he enjoyed so much? or the idea that he too, could look out for someone?

there was something about being around bobae that made him feel responsible, like a grown-up (which he is supposed to be anyway), yet at the same time, she brings out the child in him, that annoying little brother that enjoys bugging his cooler older sister because he looks up to her, the way he looks up to nobody else. he likes tagging along with her to her intimidating events, like a curious bunny next to a wild fox (ironic, judging by their difference in sizes), but he also likes roaming the streets with her at night, where there was no one else but them, two lonely souls who found a family in each other. 

a sigh leaves his lips as he grabs her slender arm, pulling her back up from the ground, not without almost falling over himself. “I told you, you shouldn’t have drank so much.” he mutters, shooting her a disapproving look. he knows he’s not one to speak (his alcohol tolerance probably isn’t any better than hers), but at least he has his limits and knows when to stop, before he ends up knocked out along the streets past midnight, which could be where she would be right then, if not for him, though he’s starting to think that she only lets herself go because she knows he’ll be there to take care of her regardless. (she’s right about that.)

if she wasn’t already halfway up the hill, he would’ve picked her up right there and then, carrying her on his back as he climbed the hill that felt a lot steeper now that they were both drunk out of their wits. “slow down or you’d fall again!” he shouts from where he was, jogging after her in equal amounts of exasperation and amazement. how is she this fast despite her state of stupor? im bobae amazes him everyday. “if you keep this up, I’m not going to let you drink again.” he says it sternly but both of them know it’s an empty threat; there’s no way he can fight against her. whatever bobae wants, she gets, and half the time, it’s woong getting it for her. he said he wanted a sister, right? well, it looks like he got what he wanted. 

“is it the time for cigarettes now?” he grumbles as he finally catches up to her, following her into the convenience store that was a little bit too bright for his eyes that had gotten used to the dim streets outside. “noona, watch where you’re going!” he warns as he picks up the items she knocked over, glancing over at the cashier apologetically. “you’re knocking everything over,” he whispers harshly, grabbing her wrists and directing her to the cashier before she creates even more of a mess. “nope, nu-uh. no more alcohol for you. I’ll get you these plasters and I’m sending you home.” he firmly tugs at her arm, grabbing a bottle of water along the way.

he thanks the cashier as they leave the store, returning to the breezy street outside. woong drags bobae to the tables lined outside the store, picking her up and sitting her down onto a table top, reaching inside the bag for the plasters they had just gotten. “sit still, I’ll plaster you up.” he pulls out a couple of plasters from the box, sifting through them and holding them up before her. “apeach or ryan? take your pick.”

there were many times in his life when he felt like the unfortunate protagonist with really bad luck — relatable, somewhat pathetic and kind of laughable? there was his first heartbreak (yes, unrequited love, what’s new?) and that one time his cat scratched his brand new boots before he even got the chance to wear them out. ouch. there was also that time he got fired the night before his rent was due and well, let’s just say, that might’ve been his lowest of lows. point is, moments like these were starting to be a cliché in his story and you’d think he’d be used to them by now. (he’s not.)

on today’s episode of how much more pathetic can he get, woong finds himself in yet another shitty situation. thank god this one had nothing to do with embarrassing first loves and feline scratches. still, packing old mouldy dvds in a dusty storeroom that reeked of mothballs was not how he had envisioned spending his christmas eve. not only was it beyond pathetic to be working on a holiday (with no date, might he add), he was here packing boxes of old dvds nobody was going to rent in this day and age. granted, this was one of the reasons he signed up for the job, like, who even rents dvds nowadays, right? that just means he’d be getting paid to sit at the counter and do his own thing; write some lyrics, read some comics and maybe get on tinder? 

there was just one little thing he forgot to take into consideration, though. what happens to all those dvds no one was renting? well, he had to sort them out, arrange them according to genre and alphabetical order. it was an arduous process that was made no easier with his dust allergy, leaving him in fits of sneezes. lucky for him, he wasn’t alone in this ordeal. he had with him a fellow comrade, another lonely soul, also nose deep into mouldy boxes of untouched dvd cases. y’know what they say about strong bonds forming through shared sufferings? he gets it now.

“finally.” he breathes out, heaving a sigh of relief as he pushes in the last dvd case on the shelf of action movies. it took him one whole hour to sort through the action films alone, though it didn’t come close to three hours of sieving through the abundance of romance films. (to be fair, they did get distracted by some, uh, adult films, but hey, could you blame them? two young, robust boys cooped up in this cursed shop without any customers, not even a pretty face to distract them? putting on the film and fast-forwarding to certain scenes was a well-deserved break for the pair.)

and now, they’re left with the last box, ironically fitting for the occasion — a box of family-friendly christmas movies to watch over hot cocoa and cookies. how nice. can’t relate. “it’s like they’re mocking us.” he deadpans, staring motionlessly at the box before him. “look at all these happy people in ugly sweaters and christmas hats...” he grumbles, pointing at the first dvd on the stack. “sure, they look ridiculous as hell but they do look a lot happier than we do.” he jokes, letting out a pained laugh. 

“frankly, I’d rather parade around hongdae in one of these stupid sweaters than be here, sorting through these old films.” he whines a little, plopping down onto the ground, a pile of dust enveloping him after. great. “you see what I mean? people are out there playing with snow and we’re in here, covered in... dust.” he finishes with a sneeze. well, whoever said that this was the most wonderful time of the year sure didn’t account for broke musicians working through the night.

she reaches for the soju bottle after he does, taking a small sip. her heart races, her head spins slightly – she’s not sure whether it’s the alcohol or his gaze that lingers on her, and she doesn’t want to find out. “what are you saying?” she replies lightly, her words honeyed, voice raspy. her eyes turn to meet his, blinking under fluttery lashes. “i always make time for you, woongie. after all, fridays are best spent with people you actually like. so, what better way than to spend it with you?”

woong has always gravitated towards beautiful things, beautiful and dangerous things. like a moth to a flame, he knows he’ll burn but he still finds himself drawn to it, nonetheless. the light brush of heat stings at times, but it ironically makes him feel more alive than ever. it was that effect she had on him, the rush of adrenaline he gets whenever he was around her. sometimes, he hears a voice inside him telling him that she’s bad for him, but he can’t help thinking to himself, “who cares?”

he’s never understood what it is like to like someone so much that you hate how you feel towards them. he knows, they’re just friends, neighbours, family, even? but why does it always feel like there’s more to their relationship? from the way her gaze lingers on him, the electrifying touch of her hands, the feeling of her lips pressed against his cheek, is this what it’s like, to be friends? as much as it frightens him to admit it, it’s been awhile since he last saw her as a friend. no, friends don’t cuddle each other to sleep, friends don’t hold each other like that. friends don’t make each other’s heart race the way she makes his race. 

if there was anything more complex than haera herself, it’ll be the relationship they had. he never seems to be able to read her mind, or decipher the meaning behind her actions. why does she look at him like she wants him but pushes him away the very next minute? why does she feel like a puzzle he can never unravel, but the harder it is to understand her, the more he finds himself gravitating towards her, desperate to make sense of what was on her mind?

there, she did it again. her words sent his heart racing, a light tint of pink powdered across his cheeks. usually, he’ll dart his gaze away from her and onto the ground, laughing it off like it was an overused joke but this time, he wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol in system, or the fact that they were sitting by a moonlit river, with her shoulders casually brushing against his ever now and then, he finds his eyes darting down to her lips. “actually,” he breathes out, “I do.” 

in an instant, regret fills him as the same old worries about ruining their friendship starts to echo in his mind, forcing himself to break into a laugh, tearing his gaze away from her. “just kidding.” no, not really. he does want to kiss her, he does want to know what it feels like to have her lips against his. would it be as soft as it looks? would it taste as sweet as she sounds? it’s embarrassing, to harbour these thoughts about her like a teenage boy infatuated with his next-door neighbour but hey, maybe that’s what it is. maybe he is completely, entirely, smitten by her.

in an attempt at masking his nerves from the way she was looking at him, he takes another chug of his soju, avoiding her gaze as he tries to put together a reply that didn’t outright scream, “I have the hots for you”. an awkward laugh sure doesn’t play well into his narrative but he’s not the best at acting, he’ll admit. “good point.” he lowers himself onto the grass, back hitting the prickly leaves as his gaze fixates on the evening sky above. while he thinks the stars pale in comparison to her eyes, at least he doesn’t have to worry about his heart racing or cheeks reddening, whenever his eyes find their way to hers. “if that’s the case then, what do you think about spending every friday together?”

we’re going to be friends, starring @ugdohyun (2020)​

woong likes to think that he is a responsible drinker who only allows himself to get really wasted in places he knows he’ll be safe at. he’s right about that, for the most part. problem is, he thinks he’s safe... everywhere. 

what would they do to me? rob me? he’d sputter amidst drunken giggles. I’m broke anyway.

at least he’s right about one place, besides the given, like his home and his friends’ apartments. there’s one place downtown that has music pumping out of its speakers like a club and neon lights dancing off its walls like a discotheque, but it’s a whole lot safer and family-friendly — the karaoke place he used to work at. 

it’s been years since he quit his job as a part-time attendant there but he still shows up every other week, sometimes, to hang with hyeju after her shift and other times, for some good ol’ karaoke. if there’s anyone that loves karaoke more than your trot-lovin’ grandaunt, it would be woong himself. ironically though, he’s not that great of a singer. sure, he can carry some notes, good enough to pull off most songs but well, he is a rapper for a reason — not that he’s ever let that get in his way. (he likes to believe that karaoke isn’t meant for the good singers, it’s just meant for the people who know how to have fun.) 

besides, hyeju never seems to complain about him showing up every now and then, sometimes a little too tipsy for his own good. she’d just shove him into an empty booth for him to sing his heart out until her shift’s over. modern day babysitting, huh? he’s pretty good at entertaining himself too, a skill he’s mastered after living alone for the past couple of years in seoul.

already familiar enough with the place, he wanders off to the rooms by himself in search of the empty booth hyeju had assigned him in a hurry, shortly before she picked up the ringing phone. hold up, was it #203 or... #204? wait, it’s probably #202. no, #204. right, #204 it is. he nods with a confidence that came out of nowhere, pushing past the door labelled #204, to find an incredibly familiar ballad playing in the room. oh, wait. he knows this song. not that he’d admit this to anyone but he had this on repeat the week after ryuu rejected him. tragic.

woong plops himself onto the sofa nearest to the door, feeling a mic hit the side of his hips, reaching down to grasp it in his hand, ready to belt out the next line, the one leading right up to the chorus which he absolutely would not allow himself to miss. it still hits the same sore spot and call him a masochist all you want, but that feeling feels pretty gratifying, like a soothing rub on a fresh bruise — it hurts yet it still feels so fucking good.

this feels fucking good. 

the song’s tempo speeds up as it leads up to the chorus and his gaze follows the words on the screen, emotions rushing to him as he belts out the next lines, refusing to peel his eyes off the screen despite already knowing the lyrics by heart. he wouldn’t even allow himself to gasp for air, lest he misses a line, or two, and he couldn’t have that happen, not during the chorus, at least.

he doesn’t even notice the other, clearly better-sounding, rather velvety voice under his own hoarse screami— singing, way too sucked into the song and all the emotions it gives him, maintaining that vigour and energy throughout the song, up until the very last word, which his voice notably cracked at. who cares. 

woong takes a big swig of water from the, again, clearly opened bottle of water on the table as he awaits the next song to appear on the screen, his eyes lighting up as three words roll into sight: 

gee - girls’ generation.

“oh my god, I love this son—” he jumps up from his seat, barely giving himself time to recover from the melancholic ballad from before, interrupted by the song’s iconic introduction that he recites with muscle memory.

“aha! listen boy, my first love story...”

we go together, starring @ughaera & @ugsohee

for a long time, whenever he was asked about his family, woong would think about the one in busan, the one he was born into and raised in for most of his life. lately, however, things started changing for him. he’s not sure when exactly but he’s starting to regard these people as family too and this time, it was by choice.

these people, namely the two girls he was lodged between: one had most of their blanket pulled to her side and the other, unwittingly rolled over to his side of their makeshift bed, fort, whatever they call the space they had set up for this sleepover, leaving him with barely any space or blanket to snuggle into. how was he supposed to fall asleep in this state? talk about mission impossible. 

okay, to be fair, he was the one that weaselled his way in between them, complaining about how lonely he felt at the side, so, yea, this one’s on him. his growling stomach wasn’t making it any easier for him as all he could think about was how nice it would be to have some fried chicken and beer on this chilly february night, and not squashed between two girls with barely any room to breathe. he wouldn’t complain if he was getting a loving cuddle instead of this human sandwich he was in — it certainly is no fun being the piece of meat in between.

speaking of meat... there it goes again, another rumble of his tummy that he prays neither of them heard. he briefly considered getting up to order food but he knew that’ll wake both of them and it wouldn’t be a pretty sight, at least not something he’d want to deal with right now, when he was both cold and hungry. getting up and returning to his place across the corridor wasn’t even an option, not when he feels someone’s leg stretch out across his, shackling him down to his spot. great.

another rumble of his tummy came as his tipping point and he finally throws in the white flag, blurting out the words he had contemplated voicing out the past hour or so. he could deal with the cold, he’d like to believe he’s a strong man anyway, but hunger? nah, he ain’t got the willpower to fight that.

“I can’t sleep.” 

there. done. said it. 

his sudden announcement shatters the silence in the room as he peeks out from under his (well, now haera’s) blanket, waiting for a pillow (or a string of expletives) to be thrown his way. if there’s one thing he’s learnt from being neighbours with the both of them, it is that they aren’t the friendliest when they get awaken abruptly.

but he figured it was worth it if he got to satisfy his cravings and knowing them, he’d probably get an earful too when they find out he ate without them so, he might as well get that out of the way now. woong sits right up and kicks whatever’s left of his blanket off, the cold hitting him right away though it comes as a relief instead. 

a sheepish smile paints his face as he peers over at his friends on either side of him.

“chimaek, anyone?”

          she’s realizing now that there’s just one very striking downside to it, though. it seems to come with a complimentary beagle lookalike snooping neighbor.

          is it that shit-eating grin on his face? (anyway, what type of person has the ability to hold a smile on their face for that long? he must be some sort of psychopath.) or that puppylike twinkle in his eyes? either way, it makes sohee uneasy. instinct tells her to pay no heed, but that line of action doesn’t seem to be working much; he’s been circling her ever since she arrived. that, and he’s hard to ignore too, what with the way he’s skulking about like that in her peripheral vision. “hey, you,” she calls out, a slight degree of exasperation creeping into her voice. “if you have something to say, then say it. if not, then clear out.”

dropping everything and moving to seoul was an attempt at finding himself, but for the last four years, woong has done anything but that. if anything, he only got more lost and strayed further from the life he wanted — up until this year.

things started looking up for him; he finally got himself a full-time job that he actually enjoys, saved up enough money to rent a decent apartment in hongdae, a stone’s throw away from his workplace. gone are the days of him juggling odd shifts to get by, uncertain of when his bank account would run dry. after four long years of trying to find his place in a city far from home, he finally has a place to call home. 

his new home is no doubt a rather tiny one but hey, anything’s better than that goshiwon he could barely move around in. now, he has a place to call his own, a place big enough for him to set-up a makeshift recording studio and still have enough room for him invite his friends over.

when he was out shopping for his new apartment, he got a little too excited and ended up adding a portable barbecue grill and projector to his cart, just in case anyone wanted to come over for a movie night. he also stocked up on some popcorn kernels, a little too much, if he had to be honest. and so, he figured it was about time he invited some people over to finish them for him.

neighbours, he could start with some of those. the unit across of his is still empty and if there was one person waiting for it to get occupied more than the landlord, it’d be none other than woong himself. wouldn’t it be fun? to have a neighbour he could share his food with, chill out with at the rooftop above (this was what sealed the deal when he was viewing the apartment as he’s always wanted to live in one of these rooftop apartments), or to just have some noise to enliven the empty corridor.

and that was exactly why he was pacing by his front door, eagerly waiting for his potential neighbour to pop by. ever since the landlord told him someone was coming by to have a look at the unit across from his, he’s been hypersensitive about every little sound he hears outside his door. even if it was just a light rustle of the wind, he’d pop his head out the door to see if they were here.

woong thought it’d be nice to say hello, slip in some words to persuade them to sign the lease and maybe even exchange contacts, so he could get started on the “beautiful friendship” he’s envisioned himself having from the first day he’s moved in. it really doesn’t matter who moves in, he had decided that he’ll make a friend out of them anyway.

he must have been too excited for them to make an appearance as he doesn’t notice the overly-friendly simper he has been wearing on his face — not until his soon-to-be neighbour calls out to him, much to his delight. he has been waiting to introduce himself but he wanted to give her some time to look around and take it all in, maybe pop by the rooftop and fall in love with the view, just like he had. instead, his plans were brought forward by a bit, not that he was complaining; he couldn’t be happier to show her around. 

her words came as a flick of the switch and woong perks up at the sound of her voice, sauntering up to her like an excited puppy on a playdate. “hey, you.” he repeats fatuously as he stretches a hand out towards her. “what’s your name?”

“I’m your new neighbour,” he introduces, all while he wears the same goofy grin he’s had on all day. “name’s nam kiwoong but my friends all call me woong so, you can call me that too.”

she might or might not have noticed that his introduction implied two things: 1) he already considers her his neighbour.  2) and not just a neighbour, but a friend too.

he’s not sure why but he has an inkling she’ll end up being both of those.

It jars him how familiar he still is after a year, black hair and bright eyes and a charmed smile playing on his lips—the last quickly fading as recognition sets in. Yeah, he wants to say. The feeling is mutual. (Ironic, considering the reason things ended between the two of them.)

He feels his jaw drop, eyes wide with surprise, and he probably sounds a little dumb when he goes, “Oh,” gaping like a fish, but it’s all he can say with minimal risk of striking bad taste. It didn’t seem appropriate to voice his thoughts—oh, it’s the boy I used to kiss well into the wee hours of morning; oh, it’s the boy whose heart I broke; oh, I want to get the fuck out of this elevator because I want to keep avoiding you. No, just no. He’d be taking salt and rubbing, kneading it into a raw, tender wound.

So he tries for, “Um, do you want me to get out?” but the words fall away as the doors shut with a final click.

Great. Just great.

woong knew his night was going to be anything but great the moment he read sohee’s text. maybe you shouldn’t come over for dinner tonight. she doesn’t need to spell it out for him to get it. he was coming over. again. 

why is he always over at sohee’s anyway? this has never bothered him quite as much before, rather, he used to like it. he used to like having him around all the time; he used to, well, he used to like him. not anymore though, he’d like to believe. or at least, that’s what he’s trying to tell himself. whether or not he’s succeeded in it is a whole other story that he doesn’t have the capacity to deal with just yet. not right now, not when he’s stomach is begging to be stuffed with food. 

it isn’t uncommon for woong to forget his meals. he often gets too caught up with his work, especially when he is working on his music. that shit takes him out of this world and he practically forgets everything around him whenever he’s completely immersed into his music. that is, until his cat crawls onto his lap to get his attention, or if his stomach does a little number, like the one it just did.

well, this wouldn’t have been a problem if he stopped coming over every other day. if not for him, woong wouldn’t have to worry about his meals (sohee and haera usually has them covered, it’s just an extra bowl of rice anyway). doesn’t he have other friends? it almost feels like he comes over even more now after what happened between them. woong might be lying to himself but a part of him wonders if it has anything to do with him. does he miss him? does he regret what he said? nonono, no. woong forces himself to snap out of it, refusing to entertain any of these thoughts that would only give him more useless hope and he really doesn’t need any of that right now. 

he considered just showing up anyway. it’s not like he did anything wrong, right? he eventually chickened out (correction: decided against it) but it’s not like he was nervous to see him again. he just wanted to be considerate of his friends. (it’s true! okay, half true.) he figured he’d make it awkward if he showed up like nothing had happened and then everyone else would have to act like nothing happened too and yeah, no thanks. it was easier to just not show up at all. 

and so, here he was, heading out for a quiet dinner by himself. sounds pathetic but he actually enjoys evenings like this. sometimes. especially after he’s milked his brain of all its brain juices for his next release that he has been distracting himself with after what had happened. someone at the bar told him, there’s no better way to get over a heartbreak than to distract himself with work. even better for musicians — just pour all that pain and agony into his writing and he’ll get a good song. or two. actually, make that three. (he’s especially proud of the third one, the one he cooked up just before he left his apartment minutes ago.)

he was just about to cross the road when it starts pouring with no warning whatsoever. usually, he’ll just slide the hood of his hoodie on and jog over to the japanese restaurant just across the street but even his hoodie couldn’t keep him dry in this rain and he’d have no choice but to make a u-turn and grab an umbrella. see what he means by his night was going to be anything but great? he knew lady luck wasn’t on his side lately but really? did mother nature have to turn against him too? 

some muttered curse words and a quick jog back to his apartment later, he arrives at the lobby again, just in time before the elevator door shuts. woong calls out for whoever was in the elevator to hold the door — no way was he gonna wait for another good five minutes for this elevator to make a round trip and yes, it takes that long, if not more. it is a pretty old elevator, he’d know. not that he used to complain before, when he shared kisses with you-know-who in the elevator, or when they held hands, enjoying every minute together in the elevator’s slow journey up. because back then, every minute with him was special, yeah, even in this shitty old elevator. 

woong rushes into the elevator, a smile on his face as he thanks the person holding the elevator door for him. but then, their eyes meet and whatever semblance of a smile he’s had on his face gets wiped off completely, hostility washing out the look of gratitude in his eyes. oh. fuck.

he has to stifle a snort at the boy’s question. he’s still the same, huh. painfully, stupidly, endearingly honest; too honest for his own good. except, he was anything but that with him and he still finds himself wondering why on some nights. 

the elevator answers for him (now it decides to be fast?) and the door shuts before he could even utter a response. not that it made a difference, anyway. what was he even supposed to say? yes, get out? I don’t want to see you? because it hurts every time I look at you? who was he kidding?

he wants to say all of that but he says none of it. instead, all that he returns him were four cutting words, timed perfectly with the pull of the elevator. 

“I don’t really care.” it’s a lie, though.

So, she tries to dial up the charm. Maybe leans into him a little too much. “I’m here to see Woong, he’s a friend.” The promoter flusters, blush evident even in the low light. 

“Yeah—whatever. Don’t get any funny ideas.” Eunkyung and a funny idea? She would never. Except for that one time, that other time, and the time before that. She holds her hands up innocently, instead, and mouths self-satisfied sure at him as she begins making her way backstage. 

That’s how she finds him, absentmindedly scrolling though something on his phone. Yeah, he was definitely prettier up close. “Hey,” she takes a seat across from him, one leg crossed over the other. “I’m Cho Eunkyung, I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting before.”

tonight’s show is his third show of the month; he’s done five shows the month before and another four the month before that. yes, he still keeps track of each show he does and if minseo was there to watch him, he’d get her to record the whole performance for him too. call it the rookie mentality, whatever, he just knows that he has to get better if he wants to keep doing all of this and if there’s anything he’s a hundred percent sure about, it was that there’s nothing he wants more than to keep performing.

and one way to do that is by reviewing every show he does. how did he do? how can he improve? what did he do well in and vice versa? usually, he’ll read the comments in the videos uploaded online and that’s how he gets a gist of his performance for the night. however, today, he decides to get the ball rolling as soon as he hops off stage, posting a snippet of his performance on instagram, taken by one of the backstage crew members. 

it takes him no more than five minutes (three maybe?) to get thousands of comments under his post. just a year ago, he barely reached thirty comments, maybe forty on a good day. it’s crazy to think about how much his life had changed after he started his youtube channel and even now, he still gets surprised by the influx of comments and likes from his increasing amount of followers.

the verdict for tonight’s show is in and it appears what he did well in was... oh. he looked handsome, that’s what one comment reads. another says his face is too cute for a rapper. should he slot that into “things he didn’t do well in”? at least there were some comments about his energy on stage — something about how they haven’t seen a rapper with his energy in awhile (again, it was the rookie mentality at work). either way, thank you dayeon2329. 

he feels himself sink into his seat as more comments about his looks begin to flood his notification page. he doesn’t want to be ungrateful and complain about these compliments (after all, it was better to have good things said about him than nothing at all, right?) but he can’t help himself from stressing over the lack of validation for his skills, every comment he gets about his looks straying him further from that validation he seeks musicality wise. 

as most things in life are timed arbitrarily, he does not expect the entrance of a stranger to come as an answer to his questions. an introduction was made, snapping him out of the trance he was in and he looks up to meet her eyes.

cho eunkyung? of course he’s heard of her. if you want to make it big in this scene, there’s a way to it that most people already know and for starters, you’d need her name in your contacts. perfect, just what he needed. he sits up with newfound interest and offers her a hand, a small smile lacing his lips.

“I’m kiwoong but most people around here just call me woong.” he returns the introduction. “here for the show?” he asks, glancing around to see if there was anyone else she could’ve been here for. nope, just him. even better.

You okay? Kiwoong mouths.

She grins, tight-lipped, and nods. Yeah, I’m fine. Because she is. Still, now would probably be a good time to excuse herself. She takes a step back only to find that she can’t. She does her best to hide her annoyance, saying something that starts with it was nice meeting you and ends with thanks again for supporting us, but before she can leave he’s pulling her back by the arm and leaning into her ear to ask for her number and, well. Fuck.

How does she let him down gently?

woong likes to joke that he is pretty and boys’ honorary sixth member. 

not that he’s any good at his instruments (besides some basic guitar skills he’s practically forced minseo into teaching him ages ago so yeah, even that might have gone down the drain). it’s only because of how often he shows up at their band practices, usually with food to extend his welcome. it’s what happens when you’re friends with three out five of the members and is an overly attached loser who gets lonely way too easily.

besides, he doesn’t mind just sitting around and watching them practice. if anything, he finds it rather therapeutic; a live band without the noisy crowd, every beat and melody amplified for his ears and his ears only. but what’s a performer without his love for the crowd? the screams, the chants, the way everyone’s voices come together as they shout the lyrics to the songs they share a common love for. it’s the human element that gets so addictive, be it on stage or amidst the crowd.

so, if you ask him if he prefers watching them practice or watching them live, he’ll pick the latter, without a doubt. and no, it’s not only because of the way haera kisses minseo on stage (yes, he finds that hot okay), nor is it only because of those fancy tricks sohee does with her drum sticks (he still gets amazed every time she throws ‘em up in the air though) — they’re just great at what they do and he doesn’t need to be friends with them to think so.

it appears he wasn’t the only one that feels that way tonight as he spots minseo with one of her fanboys, he assumes. the smile on his face falters when his gaze lands on the stranger by her side. not only was he way too close to her, he appears to be a little flushed too and woong couldn’t tell if it’s from the excitement of meeting a musician he likes or if he was just, well, drunk. 

fortunately, he needs neither of those signs to realise that minseo needed help. he could tell from the look on her face alone, the way her eyes dart uncomfortably around the room, or that visible crease on her forehead that could very well read “sos, send help”. it’s one of the things that comes with seven years of friendship; he can read her like the back of his hand and if you ask him, he’d say they’re as good as family now. 

woong makes his way over to minseo. if he was right about how she felt, then at least she has a reason to excuse herself now. if not then, the bar’s right there anyway, he could get himself a new drink too. he decides to rest his arm around her waist, not sure why but he’ll tell her it’s to protect her, if she asks.

she claims to be alright and he believes her, only because the crease on her forehead did disappear (he’ll take credit for it and associate it with him showing up by her side). however, he could tell that she was not particularly enjoying the company of mr breathe-down-your-neck and clearly wanted out of this conversation. he was about to cook up some lousy excuse for them to take their leave when minseo gets pulled back by said creep, who also had the audacity to get even closer to her.

woong fights back an impending glare as he tugs minseo closer to him, tightening the grasp of his arm that was already around her waist. instead of shooting daggers (and expletives) at the man, he plasters on a smile, one clearly of feigned cordiality as he wraps his hand around his wrist, in attempt to remove it from minseo’s arm.

“I’ll only say this once.” he smiles, or attempts to. “take your hands off my girlfriend.”

woong is off the stage. gitae knows the bouncer and gives him a nod and a whisper, allowing him to go backstage easily. he spots woong, not too far in the hallway and on the way to his small room, probably.

this is his chance.

“hey man, woong,” gitae calls out, just a bit nervous, “the set was cool. i’m bad with words but, wanna talk about it over a beer?” he says as he closes the distance between them; probably sounding more flirty than he intended to. he hopes woong doesn’t notice or doesn’t mind.

surreal, that’s what the night feels like. when he’s spent his whole life dreaming of this exact moment, it’s hard to believe that it is in fact happening, that it’s real, a reality — his reality. this is probably when he should pinch himself in the arm and awake from this sweet, sweet, dream, but no, the roaring screams from the crowd beneath prove otherwise, the backtrack of his song booming from the stereo speakers mounted above, pulling him back down to reality, on stage in an underground club in hongdae. 

and that’s when it hits him — this is no dream. he is right here on stage with a crowd of people shouting his name and the lyrics to his song. he takes a quick peek at the led screen lighting up the stage behind him, almost as if he needed a reminder that this was all actually happening. seeing his name right smack across the screen in all its glory, he finds his lips curving into a confident grin, a sudden bolt of energy surging through him. these people were here for him. 

his fingers wrapped tightly around the body of his mic, so tight his knuckles turned white, as if it’ll slip through his hand if he doesn’t hold it any tighter (to be fair, his palms did get a little clammy from his pre-stage jitters) and that he’ll lose it, the mic, the stage and everything he’s dreamt of having his whole life. the only downside to getting a taste of what he’s always wanted is the fear that comes with it, the fear of losing everything and returning to the mundane life he had before. 

but tonight is not the night for him to entertain his fears, tonight is the night he proves himself to the people watching, the fans that came down to watch him live, the non-fans who wanted to be proven right about all the things they’ve said about him, but more importantly, he wants to prove to himself that all these years of slogging out away from home was worth it. 

before he could properly take it all in, his set was over. the lights dimmed as raucous cheers drown out the final seconds of his last song. he hears his name being chanted over and over again, the smile on his face growing with every chant. now, this was everything he had dreamt of;  it was just like how he had envisioned it, if not better. he thanks the crowd and jogs off stage, a light spring in his step as he makes his way backstage, the same big smile he had worn all night never leaving his face.

as if the night didn’t already feel surreal enough, a low voice sounded from behind him. he whips his head around to locate its source and he finds himself looking into a familiar pair of eyes, one that he’s found himself looking into whenever he nosily pops his head out the door when he hears people fighting from sohee’s apartment. oh my god, it’s him. he couldn’t stop the little gasp that leaves his lips. it’s the angry ex. 

“uh, hey—” he musters, “man.” woong clears his throat and tries again, this time making a clear effort to hide the distinct loser in his voice. he was not about to embarrass himself in front of arguably one of the best drummers around and— wait, did he just... say his name? “you know my name?” woong perks up like a curious bunny, only to deflate again when the realisation hits him. “oh wait, it was on the big screen.” but still, he actually remembers it! and did he just say that his set was cool? COOL? “oh my god, you think so?” he blurts out a little too excitedly, “you actually thought my set was cool?”

the compliment serves as an icebreaker for the two unlike souls and woong lessens the gap between them, now a little less intimidated by him. “yes, sure, of course!” he nods a little too eagerly, “I’d really love for a pint right now.” it was true, he was feeling a little parched from the stage earlier (he might have exerted himself a bit too much, it was his first stage after all) and who was he to turn gitae down? besides, he could really do with some constructive feedback from an experienced senior too.

they settle onto the bar stools as woong flashes gitae a sheepish smile. “I know you.” he admits suddenly, “I mean, besides being ctrl’s drummer.” that, everyone already knows. what they don’t know though? “I’m sohee’s neighbour.” should he be smiling as he says this? well, too late. he was already beaming, and a little too much for what he was about to say. “I always hear the both of you screaming at each other.”
