Kinger was using Index commands on the computer. Even if the system he used did have a recycling bin, the likelihood that Caine was sent to it is slim to none. My dad informed me of this, because he actually did a similar thing recently when he was trying to back up a hard drive.
He was using the exact same method that Kinger was using in the episode. When he tried to input some kind of command by accident it completely wiped the drive immediately. No recycling bin, not even an 'are you sure' message like what Kinger got. Apparently it's very dangerous to use Index to do what Kinger was trying to do.
I know it's fiction and all and it's not going to always be entirely accurate to reality, but I think this was done intentionally to further drive home that Caine (or at least the Caine we know) is really gone for good.
I love Caine, he's my favourite character, but he probably isn't coming back. The absolute best option I can think of that might happen is if there is a 'backed-up' Caine that the humans can access to replace him. Maybe something one of the programmers thought of but was never needed for whatever reason. In this case, if they did bring him back, he wouldn't be the same Caine we knew before and would be like how Gummigoo was in ep 4. A completely blank slate, default settings, no memories. It would be a bittersweet kind of ending for him, to give him another chance, but probably not what a lot of people want. And again, that's just my theory.
The very real and most likely possibility is that they never bring him back, and they all are just stuck there without him anymore. I think everything to do with the show is telling us that this is the case.
Although, I don't know about most fans, but I fucking love shit like that! I want this show to be nuanced and I want to walk out that movie theatre with the most mixed feelings I've ever had leaving a theatre.
Let Digital Circus be what it ends up being. Open endings are still endings, even if they are less satisfying, because it's okay for a story not to be entirely satisfying. I can see now from a mile away that so many people will be upset over it because they're expectations are set to how fans want it to end, and not the glaring thematic evidence right in their faces.
Anything could happen, but based on what we know (and Gooseworx's comments about inspiration and Evangelion) I am gearing up for the worst, and I am so fucking hyped! I want to be destroyed by this. I want to feel what this show is trying to make me feel, and I'm so happy, excited and grateful I get to experience it!
At the end of the day you can have whatever opinion you want. Just don't be an asshole, I guess? I think we need a lot less assholery in this fandom.
And for the love of everything NO SPOILERS BEFORE THE YOUTUBE RELEASE! We can wait 2 fucking weeks god damn!
