The more Mary looked at the lab, the bigger the knot in her stomach got. They had beakers larger than she thought they had a right to be and wires that connected to things that made no sense to her. WCKD was an entirely different world that she was so close to abandoning. Her need to help people wasn't mixing well with her worries about being in over her head.
Everything was fancy for lack of a better word. It was perfectly dressed up in a science coat with gold threads. She knew presentation was important, but this seemed to be a little more than that. This place looked like it was hiding something.
“Ready for the first day?”Ava asked, already blending into her surroundings. With her tight bun and best flats, she was practically ready to run the place.
“I guess?”she answered hesitantly. She wanted to find the cure more than anything. She wanted people to have a chance at life again.
She just wasn't sure this place would help get there.
“Hey,”she said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. Mary looked over into those sweet eyes and forgot about every fear that existed. Her mind was melting away into nothing more than a future of this. Of waking up and going home to Ava like she wasn't keeping her exactly where she wanted at. She was out of touch enough to leave the lovesick women craving more but close enough to give her a taste of hope.
She didn't know that. She wasn't able to spot the pushover she was becoming over the rose-colored glasses Ava promised weren't there.
So when she said to trust her, when she promised they would conquer this together, she had no choice but to believe her.

so, college au where thomas is a broke college student but he always makes time out of his day to feed the pigeons. he lives in nyc btw in a shitty little apartment with a shitter job and often times he has to choose paying rent over eating. but he always makes time out of his day to feed the pigeons because it makes him feel good about himself despite the lingering college debt hanging over his head.
and one day the pigeons watch as thomas tries to push himself up off a bench to go home, but he’s so exhausted and overworked and hungry that he collapses. the pigeons r like omg wtf he can’t die here.
and when thomas wakes up he thinks he is hallucinating because like. holy shit why r all these pigeons so fucking huge and talking to him. only to find out that the pigeons decided that okay we’ll temporarily give him the ability to shape shift into their kind. which. okay cool thomas can fly now but he looks like a pigeon. y’know what. he’ll take it.
so thomas is free to go around and steal bagels and stuff because whoses gonna stop him he’s a pigeon! except like two weeks into flying around everywhere & not paying $3 mta bus fare & stealing “ free ” food his wings become injured.
and he can’t shift back into human form with an injured wing because it can injure his human body and thats medical debt thomas doesn’t really have the money for but he needs to work. he wandering down the subway platform, waddling down with wing that drags across the dirty concrete floor — when he’s suddenly scooped up and pushed up against a thick chest. and thomas is like what the fuckkk and he looks up and he meets the saddest pitiful gaze he has ever seen in his life its literally like a wet dog looking down at him. there’s another set of cold fingers running over his feathers and shushing him, and he’s met with an equally pitiful wet dog look and thomas wonders if he accidentally fell on the tracks and is about to be taken to heaven by these two angels which, he wouldn’t argue about if they wanted to take thomas away.
ok just came back from the grocery so ! they kinda take thomas away, via the train, and he’s brought back to a cute little apartment. minho, which is the guy thats holding him so close to his strong chest, is commanded by newt to drop him inside the bathroom and shut the door quickly, which he agrees.
thomas is placed inside the bathroom sink before the door slams shut, and he waits there until newt & minho return, in pjs and random medical supplies.
“huh. he’s not freaking out.” newt says, and thomas tilts his head. “maybe he hit a window?”
“hi, baby.” minho coos at him, scooping thomas back up and sitting on the toilet. “can we take a look at your wing?”
thomas doesn’t dare move, afraid he’ll come off as too human, so newt takes that as a yes to lift up his wing to inspect the damage. thomas feels a jolt of pain run through his body and his wings flap, but minho only grips him tighter. “it’s okay baby, newtie’s gonna make it all better, okay?”
newt wraps his wing in gauze while minho gives him head scratches and words of encouragement and telling thomas he’s doing so well for him, and god if thomas wasn’t a pigeon right now he’d look sunburnt with how flustered these words are making him.
eventually, they drop him on the kitchen counter while they look for something to eat, and minho places a hamburger bread for thomas to pick at. thomas doesn’t, but instead waddle over to the plain pasta newt’s pushed to the side and pick at it instead.
“he’s got expensive taste.” minho points out, taking the plate of pasta away from thomas. thomas, unable to help himself, lets out a sad coo, and minho instantly begins to hand feed thomas in smaller pasta sizes instead. “maybe he used to belong to someone, newt. we should check facebook.”
“i doubt it. wandering the subway tracks alone? with a broken wing? even if he did belong to someone, he’d have a tag around his ankle.”
this is all i have for the au so far but im speedrunning this fr ALSO this is what thomas looks like as a pigeon bc why not ok gn
