The Road to Lecco: U19 Team USA Photo Essay

On a crisp spring weekend, ninety athletes took to the field in Monroe, WA to test themselves against the best of their peers at the USA Ultimate U19 West Coast tryouts. The previous weekend, ninety of their East Coast compatriots ran the same gauntlet in Atlanta, GA. In total, over 350 athletes submitted applications to represent the U.S. on the Open and Women’s U19 National teams at the World Junior Ultimate Championships this July in Lecco, Italy. Half were invited to the tryouts — less than fifty would make the final cut.

What we love about ultimate is not the winning. Winning, in the words of Bowen, is merely a celebration of the hours of blood, sweat, and tears that we put in with our teams. The bonds we form with our teammates is what makes the game — and all sport — special. The friendships many make playing ultimate are some of the deepest in their lives.
