Started with just the idea of Grace laying on Rocky’s ball while they talk about their love lives and now it’s almost 4am and I have drawn a shirtless Simon and now rocky preforming a sensual interpretive dance… this is getting away from me.
I forgot to share this
grace: would you still love me—
rocky: yes we'd still love you if you were a worm
rocky: no we're not mad at you
rocky: yes we love you
grace: 🥹
adrian: he does not speak for both of us. i would not love you if you were a worm. the human body is weird enough.
Because poor Dr. Grace was never meant to be up there with a dead crew and no memories :,)
Based on this post by @the-immortal-restless
lowkeygenuenly colt was the twin obsessed with space
ryland convinced himself that he always loved space because his memorykept on showing him pics being taken at space museum but he couldn't tell who those next to him were (colt and court)
he spent the entire mission + trip to erid thinking that he at least was somewhere he always dreamed to be one day
then he sees two pebbles of almost the exact same color messing around and being little menaces and breaks down crying
his twin loved space
his twin was the one dressed like an astronaut at every costume they've ever gone to
his twin knew the entire galaxy like the back of his hand
his twin was the 'brave' one
colt was the one who would have loved all this
and rayland didn't even have the decency of remembering him
Because I can’t stop thinking about it
Colt: you! You were supposed to be on a spiritual retreat
Ryland: namaste
Colt: and you’re supposed to be dead
Court: I got better?
So in this AU, the first sign anyone notices is that Ryland is a quiet kid. Colt is born first and enters the world screaming, but Ryland is completely silent. Their mother’s heart drops, but the doctors are quick to reassure her that he’s breathing and by all appearances is perfectly healthy. They do some checks to be sure, listen to his lungs and his heart, and don’t find anything of concern. Congratulations, Mrs. Grace, says the nurse, you have one very chill baby. When they come home from the hospital Colt makes various excited noises at all of the colors and sounds, while Ryland just flops his little head back and stares wide-eyed at the open sky above them.
His quietness becomes more evident as they grow. Colt picks up babbling like a champ; Ryland seems content to sit and listen. When he does vocalize, he does so with little hums. Again, his parents worry, but the advice columns all say that it’s normal for some kids to take longer to start talking so they try not to let it get to them. Eventually they figure out that if they leave him next to Colt for long enough he’ll start mimicking his brother in call-and-response, so they assure themselves that Ryland is just a Quiet Kid and let that be enough.
The second sign is harder to dismiss.
Babies’ eyes can’t focus much to begin with and they lack the muscle strength and coordination to react to stimulus with any sort of intention, but like his quietness it becomes clearer with time that his attention will occasionally catch on something without becoming clearer what that something might be. He likes to look at the sky, but he’ll also stare at blank patches of wall or floor or off into the middle distance. His father picks him up one day and it takes several seconds before he gives any indication that he’s noticed.
These vacant spells start to last longer. He’ll be sitting on the floor playing and suddenly fall still, and every time it takes a few more seconds for him respond when his parents call to him or touch him. The day he slips for over a full minute they call emergency services. He’s back by the time the ambulance arrives, but the EMTs still examine him thoroughly; he’s given a clean bill of health. His parents are advised to consult a neurologist and schedule an appointment; the neurologist gives the same answer as everyone else. So does the next one, and the one after that. No matter how many tests are run, the results come back the same: medically speaking, there is nothing wrong with Ryland Grace.
They have no choice but to learn to live with it. When Ryland slips, his parents keep track of the time for one more point of data to send to the team of doctors who have taken interest in his case. His brothers take up positions next to him, Colt curled up against his side and Court with his arms around them both. Ryland stays gone for five, for ten, for twenty minutes at a time, but he always comes back and the family breaths a quiet sigh of relief.
(Once, when they’re older, Colt asks him where he goes when he slips. Ryland tilts his head in consideration. I think, he says, it might be home.)
had a dream that Court and Claire are on a trip or more likely on the run but their plane gets hijacked or crashes just outside Stratts Vatt, so Court had to just swim all the way their with Claire to get help for everyone else, or maybe their the only two survivors, who knows. Maybe it was a crashed helicopter. Who knows. But someone just goes FUCK THERE WAS A CRASH WE GOTTA GO HELP THEM- and the first person they drag up is just. Ryland Grace 2. Ryland grace but talker buffer and visibly haunted. And a father(?) and I imagine hes like. 'im here to get help-' 'Dr. Grace...?' '...no.'
Ryland comes outside, looks at his dead big brother and assumes he's having a dream and fell asleep at his desk.
coltlandgenty au idea.
The events of 'The Gray Man' take place, then Court rocks back up for family get togethers, his brothers none the wiser.
He's like "I do this stuff so my brothers never have to..."
And then Colt gets into the events of 'The Fall Guy' and Court is in the background silently freaking tf out like "How did he get into this mess?" But manages to subtly help out without revealing himself.
Then the Astrophage stuff starts happening, and Court gets brought on. Then he spots his brother Ryland just fucking following Stratt around like a right hand man and he's just left standing there like "what the fuck is wrong with my family. Are we cursed?"
I love that Grace says he and Rocky "haven't run into anything where our cultures clash" while they're actively navigating two pretty major points of difference. From Grace's perspective, being watched in your sleep is sort of unnerving; for Rocky it's imperative. From Rocky's perspective, eating is taboo and private; for Grace it's a casual, social activity. When Grace says they haven't run into any culture clashes, he's just woken up to Rocky watching him and now he's eating breakfast. It's obviously not true that they have no conflicts in their social norms! It's just that they instinctively accommodate each other with curiosity and empathy, finding ways to bend on the things that matter to each other and explain when something is really important to themselves. Grace has spent his life holding other people at arm's length, and then in Rocky he meets someone who makes him want to do the work, and that work becomes so natural he doesn't even realise he's doing it.
Do we think Stratt missed being a normal person? Obviously she wouldn't have the time to miss much of anything, what with everything needing to happen by yesterday, but working with military and professionals, I'm sure she got tired of the way people stood up when she walked in, ceased talking, saluted and spoke concisely. I think maybe that was why she kept Ryland around, not as just a scientist, but as a normal person. A point of reference to remind her of the people she's saving.
Stratt programmed Mary to make Grace's exact preferred coffee,,, I'm gonna be sick 😭😭😭
many posts about grace dying in the lab explosion, but consider: stratt dies, and grace has to navigate an entirely different kind of betrayal when it’s revealed she named him as contingency director. she knew what it means to carry that weight, and was still willing to lay it on his shoulders without so much as asking - but it’s also the most pronounced act of trust anyone could possibly give him. so he’s angry, and honoured, and grieving, and the person he most needs to talk to about it all isn’t there to hear it
Stratt's Vat's (illegally smuggled) Camera Roll (humanity's saviours everyone):
- Hatch maternity shoot with the beetles (for whatever reason they managed to get a fake pregnancy belly on the Vat and he is wearing it), one image has Komorov holding him like if he's the father
- a zoomed in video taken outside of the chapel room, inside is Eva and Hatch having what at first sounds like a normal discussion, but if you listen closely he's actually telling her about the Popemobile in the Car's Cinematic Universe and the implications of it, she is wearing a contemplative but deeply confused look
- a picture of Annie and Olesya asleep after a long meeting with the science team, their heads leaning on each other with their hair braided together
- video of Carl, Ryland, and Komorov making a domino chain out of old lab material, they knock it down but at the end of the chain is Eva giving them a disapproving look
- The astronauts lined up, backs to the camera, wearing matching sweatpants with the words Eva's angels printed across their asses (Ilyukhina and Shapiro's idea)
- a video taken by Komorov showing a tarantula that somehow made its way in the lab, then panning over to Lokken and Grace huddled together on a table screaming, when he finally kills it, they push at each other pretending they weren't just holding the other
- video of Ilyukhina and Shapiro giving a presentation titled Why You Should Give Us Hysterectomies, Lamai and Eva sat listening. Halfway through, Annie is standing in front of a slide depicting a baby with a red x across it, Martin now stood by her side, nodding
- picture of LeClerc lying on the Vat's deck post-Antarctica, rain falling hard, Eva standing over his head with an umbrella, two beer bottles in her free hand (instead of her usual coffee)
- you know that prank where you move a sleeping person and they wake up confused? There's a video taken by the astronauts zooming in to a lifeboat tethered to the Vat, Yáo in the centre still wearing his pajamas, faint sounds of Mandarin cursing under Ilyukhina's snickers
- series of images of Lamai, Lokken, and Eva at another EU meeting, getting more visibly frustrated at the men around them, ending with Lokken's hands on the table yelling at whatever world leaders were pissing them off, Lamai standing to join her, Eva leaned back in her seat but now wearing a smile
- video of LeClerc and Hatch discussing something in French, except it's LeClerc being unable to fully follow Hatch's Quebecois accent, his face visibly showing his confusion
- picture of the lead scientists and Eva in a late night/early morning (who knows anymore, time is an illusion on the Vat) emergency meeting still in their pajamas (three years into ship life, it was too damn early/late for them to care, and they gave up on pretensions months before)
- said pajamas were: Hatch wearing a shirt printed with his wife's face across his chest (it's been over a year since he went home, poor guy); classic plaids for Komorov, matching cotton set for Lamai, striped button down for LeClerc, Ryland in his ancient college t-shirt and sweats; the only two who look like they can pass for a meeting are Lokken and Eva who both basically live in sweaters
- video taken of Lamai giving the astronauts ear piercings (Ilyukhina begged, eventually they all acquiesced, even Yáo agreed (after endless begging)) (Ilyukhina was probably going to have Annie pierce her second lobes anyways, Lamai found out and insisted on doing it sterilely)
- series of images of a 'wedding ceremony' for Martin and Annie in the mess hall. Martin is wearing a white curtain fashioned around him like a wedding dress, Annie wearing a black jacket, white shirt, black sweats, and a way too long tie. Olesya is at the podium (stolen from one of the meeting rooms) officiating the makeshift ceremony, Yáo is made flower girl (Olesya insisted on having him wear a flower crown), while Ryland is the ring bearer (paper rings that Olesya origamied minutes prior)
- (Eva of course found out, afterwards she asked them if they wanted to make it official, neither really cared but she did order them a pair of real silver bands) (they did not come in time, the only proof of their love remains in a dusty box on top a stack of those printed out pictures)
The concept of Eva Stratt eventually developing dementia.
She forgets what day it is, then what week, then whay month, and eventually what year. It's almost like when she was in prison and time just blurred together and everything hurt.
She forgets her prison neck tattoo. She forgets ever going to prison at all. Why is there a mark on her neck? She asked one of the staff what it meant once but it slipped her mind afterwards. She forgets her own name but she Knows that she has no one. Not even a dog. She forgets how old she is.
However her bones, her muscles, her nervous system do not forget Project Hail Mary and being Dictator of the World. Having to race to save the world over and over again for a reason that she only half-remembers. She asks after Dr Grace when she forgets.
There is a man who works in the care facility* with brown-blond hair and blue eyes who wears funny socks (even if she would never tell him she found them funny. It would be deeply unprofessional and an affection that she cannot afford to give) and is constantly misplacing his glasses. She calls him Dr Grace sometimes. He is Dr Grace sometimes. Other times she calls him the name that's on his badge. Big and yellow like Grace's raincoat is. Was. He almost always brings her good coffee.
She tells him that she is sorry and that she did what must be done and would do it all again tomorrow. Today, in three hours. She forgets.
*idk if Stratt would end up in a care home (or even make it to old age at all but 🤷🏻♂️) with others or if she would be on her own but with carers coming to visit her instead
"If only Stratt had the coma resistant gene she would've gone herse-" what if she went anyway.
What if she spent the journey awake with no one but the comatose bodies of her friends for company.
What if she watched as Yao's life support failed and couldn't do anything to help but mourn.
What if she woke up one "morning" to find Ilyukhina gone too and had to grapple with the fact that the only ones left were here and the man she betrayed.
What if she sat by Grace's side from then on because the thought that he could die too was too much to bear, and even if she knew her presence changed nothing it was she best she could do.
What if she watched him sleep.
When it’s announced that a Bay Area middle school teacher is one of three heroes sent to save the world, San Francisco clamors to rename things to “Ryland Grace.” Grover Cleveland Middle is quick to the draw, becoming Ryland Grace Middle the very next school year. Grace also gets a street, of course, a science wing at Stanford, a state park along the coast — by the time the Beetles return, you could probably throw a rock in San Francisco and hit a Ryland Grace reference.
Eva Stratt, meanwhile, is a stain. Graffiti tucked away in alleys and under bridges, forever painted over by the powers that be. A name meant to be forgotten. Stratt has always known this was part of the deal: after all, humanity needs a villain just as much as it needs its heroes. The best she can hope for is to be erased entirely on Earth.
And yet, light-years away, there is a beloved body of water, its surface dancing with artificial waves, that Ryland Grace wistfully refers to as The Sea of Stratt.
