Do Americans realize that for the most part other countries just do not have military bases in foreign countries. And of the other countries that do its like usually less than 5. The fact that we have huge carve outs in the territory of so many other countries just for power projection is actually fucking unusual
World Beyond War has a database which aims to record all of the world's foreign military bases. It uses a very wide definition of what a "base" is, including airstrips, naval facilities within larger ports, "lily pads," etc.
Here's how many foreign bases they currently count for a few of the world's most powerful countries:
TÜRKIYE is #2? I would not have expected that.
(It's also surprising that Singapore has so many, and China so few. Despite the difference between their counts being 4.)
The Turkish government has one of the most interventionist foreign policies of any country in the Middle East, a reflection of President Erdogan's neo-Ottoman ideology.
Most of their foreign military bases are in Syria and Iraq. This is partially because the Turkish government played a major role in the Syrian Civil War, and they're now effectively the sponsor of the new Syrian government. But it's also a way for them to project their power into the Syrian and Iraqi regions of Kurdistan, as the Turkish government considers the population of Turkish Kurdistan to be its greatest internal security threat.
Most of Turkey's other foreign military bases are stationed around the Mediterranean in order to secure their routes to the Atlantic Ocean; this includes their base in the Turkish-occupied region of Northern Cyprus. The last few are scattered elsewhere around the region (Azerbaijan, Qatar, Somalia, etc.)
how it feels to know youre being annoying but not being able to stop
what they don't tell you about making friends is you gotta be a lil annoying. you gotta push past the fear of "what if they don't want to talk to me" and simply ask someone how their day is going, send a meme. you cannot connect to people if you're both just awkwardly waiting for the other to start.
