He'd thought things would be better. He'd thought they'd all make it to Baldur's Gate, that the Selunite wards would hold and the ambush amid the Shadow Curse would be the worst of their journey. He'd thought he'd be sharing dinners with Cal and Lia, that he wouldn't be waiting every day for news from the Ilmatari temple's clinic on their condition. He'd thought Master Lorroakan would understand, would let him rest, would at least actually teach him.

He'd thought a lot of things.

These days, it was easier not to think. Easier to only speak when addressed directly, when answering his master's obtuse questions. Easier to find what positions protected him enough so he wouldn't bleed on the counter again. Easier to just let the venom sink in, underscored every night by memories of his people dying around him.

Rolan's tail hung limp as his gaze roamed over the store without truly seeing any of the customers, only looking for a raised hand or a beckoning stare. A scabbed split on his lower lip itched; he restrained the instinct to scratch or bite at it, instead reorganizing a few of the counter's already-sorted compartments. Don't scratch. Don't bleed. Don't make people stare.

He almost wrinkled the inventory list with the jolt at a familiar voice calling his name. Rolan looked up while smoothing out the parchment, and exhausted eyes widened despite a twinge in one bruised cheek. "Shadowheart...?" Thank the gods, at least he and his companions had escaped the Shadow Curse as well.

But something seemed off - or, was Rolan imagining it? The other's smile looked genuine, even if the playfulness that accompanied it stung on reflex. Maybe it was the air around Shadowheart, so to speak, something... colder, more distant, that made a few of the cleric's words land wrong in Rolan's ears.

Even so, an acceptance was on the tip of his tongue, until panicked reason swallowed it back. What if Master Lorroakan saw it as weakness, punished his wrong answers harder to wring that softness out of him? Or worse, what if it was considered a sign of lacking proper dedication, and he was barred from the tower? Jaw tensing despite another ache, Rolan shook his head, unable to meet Shadowheart's eyes as he replied, subtly tremulous, "...It's nothing to trouble with." He realized he'd glanced in apprehension toward the portal to Ramazith's Tower, and dragged his gaze away. "What brings you here? I know it can't be me." What glimmer of a half-smile Rolan managed was quick to fade. Wonderful as their night together had been, he could guess Shadowheart and the others had loftier goals than finding him.

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ Shadowheart arched his brows when Rolan refused his healing magic. And frankly, now that he thought about it for longer than two seconds, he found it odd that the tiefling was working in an establishment that sold everything from scrolls to healing potions & yet looked like this.

❝Suit yourself,❞ he said after a beat of almost oppressive silence, giving Rolan another deliberate once-over that made it perfectly clear Shadowheart KNEW something was amiss.

❝I came to stock up on supplies, but it appears you must be fresh out of healing potions.❞ The remark was pointed, but he didn't press further ; Shadowheart wouldn't waste energy pursuing those who refused aid. Not even when it came to those he cared about. No, he'd been taught to respect when people chose to bear their burdens alone.

And with that, the Sharran let the matter drop & casually picked up one of the pamphlets seeking adventurers for the Nightsong.

ㅤㅤㅤFools.

❝To be honest, I had no idea you were working here,❞ Shadowheart remarked conversationally, glancing over the pamphlet before his eyes returned to Rolan. ❝Quite the surprise — a pleasant one, to be sure.❞ A faint smile. ❝I'd assumed you'd be buried under dusty tomes in Ramazith's Tower by now…❞

He paused, his tone growing more careful.

❝And your siblings? They're well, I hope?❞

He knew how delicate this question was. Cal and Lia might not have survived, & the last thing he wanted was to inflict that pain on Rolan. Even so, he had grown fond of them and was genuinely interested in their whereabouts.

ㅤㅤㅤ. . . And if Rolan was indeed suffering such loss, well. Shadowheart could offer him salvation, should he be willing to accept it.

Some memories, after all, were better discarded…

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ Being chosen by a higher power was intoxicting.

Everything Shadowheart had ever dreamed of & prayed for had finally come to pass, and now he was... happy. Or so he told himself, though it did sadden him to know he would have to sever ties with those he'd come to call friends. Lady Shar did not share one's heart with others.

Still, such feelings were pointless and foolish ; things meant to be discarded in Lady Shar's embrace.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤAs the DARK JUSTICIAR stepped into Sorcerous Sundries, he wasn't wearing his justiciar armor, of course. One couldn't forget that Sharrans weren't particularly... welcome and secrecy was among the highest commandments. Yet those who had known Shadowheart before would notice something had changed. There was an air of cold superiority about him now, though that wasn't everything...

❝Rolan?❞ His brows lifted when he recognized the tiefling behind the counter & a genuine smile touched his lips. ❝Well, well. Will you look at that! You actually made it and with all your limbs still attached, no less.❞

After the night they'd shared, Shadowheart had found himself hoping Rolan would survive. He'd even prayed to Lady Shar for his protection, knowing that killing Selûne's daughter would likely dispel whatever wards protected Last Light Inn. He told himself it wasn't sentiment. It was pragmatism.

They needed allies with useful connections & this Lorroakan seemed to represent exactly that.

ㅤㅤㅤHis prayer, it seemed, had been answered.

Black-rimmed green eyes swept over the tiefling, taking in his battered and bruised state with more amusement than concern. ❝....Though clearly the journey wasn't without its challenges, hmm? You like you've wrestled a troll. Need a cleric~?❞ He grinned, playful & dashing as he'd been the last time they'd been together.

❝Fortunately for you, I'm feeling charitable.❞

The scoff was expected, to a degree. Modesty was the response from many who'd done such things, though Rolan never entirely understood why. Kindnesses were often just as much a choice as cruelties, and no less worthy of owning up to.

But then, what Shadowheart said wasn't quite modesty. It was instead framed as incidental, a whim, low-risk enough to bother with. There was something cold in that reasoning, something that didn't quite align with Shadowheart's earlier conversation and attentiveness. Rolan hadn't always succeeded in reading people, but it seemed like the other might be trying to convince someone else besides him. But who?

Not really his business to pry, he supposed. Rolan knew he wouldn't appreciate it if he were trying to make a particular point about gods-knew-what to gods-knew-who, and some ignorant blundered in to throw around guesswork or push for details.

"...Right. Of course," he replied, quieter, glancing down at his wine again. A beat or two, a deeper breath, and Rolan met Shadowheart's gaze once more. He kept a sliver of his earlier smile, though there was a slight fragility to it this time. "Well. No matter why you did it, you still have my gratitude, whatever that counts for."

Rolan washed down the rest of his half-formed thoughts with another swig of wine. "Where next for you, then, now that we can all put this blasted place behind us? I assume it'll be separate ways in the morning, like last time."

Shadowheart had been thoroughly indoctrinated in the importance of (sacred!) secrecy & anyone who dared violate it was met with swift retaliation. Verbal or otherwise.

The tiefling was clever enough not to test the cleric's boundaries on that front, though Shadowheart caught himself thinking he might have been inclined to show Rolan grace if he had.

❝Much as I'd prefer to be anywhere else, Ketheric Thorm is still drawing breath, which is rather inconvenient for, well, everyone,❞ he explained with a soft sigh, swirling the wine absently. ❝Fortunately, our little adventure in Moonrise Towers yielded an useful lead.❞ He glanced into his goblet briefly before draining the last of it and refilling both their cups.

❝Once we've ended this wretch——❞ and by his Lady Shar's mercy, they would, ❝——my companions and I are headed to Baldur's Gate ourselves.❞

Green eyes meet Rolan's, a wry smile playing at his lips.

❝You should come with us, Rolan. Safety in numbers and all that, and your skills would certainly be an asset. Besides…❞ The raven haired cleric leaned a little closer.

❝I wouldn't mind having you around. Your company is considerably more… stimulating than what I'm accustomed to~❞

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ ❝Yes, you ought to be sorry. And don't think a night of stargazing will earn you my forgiveness so easily.❞ He huffed, still more playful than anything else, leaning in until his lips barely brushed against Osian's.... only to pull back at the last moment, teasing.

Shadowheart was petty. There was no denying that.

His brows arched with suspicion as he glanced at the book's cover. ❝Much as I despise being the voice of reason, you need to step away from these texts for a day or two,❞ he said, his playful expression melting into something more serious as he reached out to adjust Osian's robe casually.

❝I know our time here is limited, but even so, I'd rather not watch you stumble across something that corrupts that brilliant mind of yours. Wizards are notoriously susceptible to this sort of thing, you know~❞ He leaned up to press a kiss to his forehead.

For a moment, Osian had to wonder what he had said to bring about such a reaction - but then it dawned on him. 'falling in love with you'. He started to blush furiously. He hadn't intended for it to come out that way, it just slipped past his lips without him even noticing. It wasn't that he didn't love Shadowheart - he certainly did - he had just hoped to confess in better environs, at a better time.

He was worried it would have been all too much, that he would be pushing too hard if he just said it outright. Shadowheart was at a difficult crossroad in his life, and the last thing he needed was Osian unintentionally putting pressure on him to share the same notion.

Osian was used to being used up and thrown away when his worth was gone. Perhaps his fear of history repeating itself also kept him from saying it more appropriately... But it was out there now. Whatever consequence came from it, he'll take it with grace.

But no consequence came. Instead, the words and actions only grew softer - until Shadowheart leaned away for him for a moment and confessed in a much more wondrous way then Osian had done.

Osian's grey eyes widened slightly, as did his lips as they grew into a smile. He raised himself up off his haunches slightly to be more eye-to-eye with Shadowheart as he cupped his jawline with both hands. "I love you too..." He spoke softly, just above a whisper as he fought through the stun to confess properly.

Leaning in a little more, he kissed Shadowheart - a tender, gentle thing. Full of devoted affection, but easy to pull away from should it be too much.

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ It was the opposite of too much. Shadowheart responded by deepening the kiss, his breath hitching as he pressed closer.

His lips moved against the wizard's with growing passion, with so much longing & LOVE that had finally been given a voice, one hand sliding to the back of his neck.

When they parted, Shadowheart didn't go far. He lingered close enough that their breaths still mingled, his forehead nearly touching Osian's as his eyes fluttered open.

For a long moment he simply looked at him. His Osian.

Shadowheart's fingers sought out a strand of his onger hair, toying with it before tucking it away with a tender smile.

ㅤ❝I like your hair like this... have I told you that already?❞ he asked softly, voice raw ; maybe an attempt at levity though it was entirely genuine.

Osian's stomach knotted, his heart thumping behind his rib cage as Shadowheart brought his hand to his lips. A smile crossed against his own. What they had was new, but it was wild and strong. Osian didn't want to entertain the idea of letting it rest any time soon.

"I'm honoured to hear you say that," He spoke quietly, his smile meek but mostly out of shyness. He was used to words like this being rather hollow, or asking about how much Osian loved them rather than the other way around. It was still new to hear them so genuinely from someone... "Because I feel the same. Everything has changed, but this - what we have - has been the most wonderful thing to come out of this misadventure..." He closed his other hand over Shadowheart's, surrounding it with his scarred fingers. "Even being able to access my full potential of magic at long last pales in comparison to falling in love with you."

The wizard's smile extended lightly as Shadowheart tucked the hair to the side. An affectionate touch. But also a reminder to trim his hair before leaving anywhere... Osian didn't have a cemented plan either, he just knew as he sat in his sister's home that - despite everything - he wasn't ready to come home just yet. "Candlekeep is a fountain of knowledge from all planes, there would surely be plenty on lycanthropy. Perhaps Candlekeep can quell our urge to learn, and then we can take a boat up to Waterdeep to discover more about faith, hm?" Osian suggested. "Waterdeep is a Wizard's paradise, so I'm hardly opposed to going." He grinned, which he kept firm as he shuffles a little closer to rest his forehead upon Shadowheart's.

"If anyone is going to keep an eye on me, I'm glad it's you."

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ Shadowheart’s breath caught in his throat, the words striking him with such force that for a moment he couldn’t speak at all. In love.

Hearing Osian say it out loud… was overwhelming.

ㅤ❝I spent my entire life believing I would never be allowed something like this,❞ he managed, his voice thick with emotion. ❝I… I don’t have words for what you’ve just given me.❞

For so many years, he had believed that love was a weakness, a dangerous indulgence that clouded judgement & invited suffering. He had been taught to extinguish it before it could ever take root.

Nothing but cruel LIES. Osian had never made him weaker.

If anything, he had become the very reason Shadowheart found the strength to walk away from the darkness that had claimed his entire life.

His eyes burned with unshed tears as their foreheads rested together, tender fingers brushing along Osian’s cheek.

After a moment, he pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, smiling softly.

It almost made Rolan fumble, how genuinely attentive Shadowheart looked while listening. He couldn't remember the last time someone had paid such heed to everything he said, aside from perhaps his siblings - and even then, only sometimes. He didn't dislike it; rather, it made him feel more aware than usual of his own body and expression and tone. The end of his tail swayed again in small, steady curls.

Rolan huffed, quiet and sheepish and flattered, when the cleric complimented him so readily. He couldn't - and wouldn't - deny it, not when it rung so true, but having it recognized nonetheless brought subtle darkened heat to his cheeks and his half-hidden ears. Surely he could blame it on the wine, if it was noticed. Surely.

For his own part, Rolan noticed but did not remark on the wistful turn of Shadowheart's look. He couldn't even begin to guess where the other's thoughts might have wandered, and knew better than to try.

What surprised him more was that earlier warmth returning, as their eyes met in tandem with their tankards. Rolan could feel that heat spreading further on his face. His hands fidgeted idly at the rim and handle of his drink. "...Thank you. I, I hope you find what you're looking for as well. What you've done for us, not just me but all of us, it's more than enough to deserve that."

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ Shadowheart was nothing if not observant & he noticed the way Rolan’s rust-red skin took on a deeper hue.

A grin played at his lips, his green eyes lingering on the wizard longer than propriety might permit. He wouldn’t mind Rolan’s company for the rest of the evening, he thought. It would be a good distraction from all the doom and gloom, from the uncertainty of what lay ahead ; a pleasant way to cope with everything. Then again, the tiefling had been through quite an ordeal tonight and Shadowheart didn’t want to be too forward.

When Rolan returned the praise and pointed out his ' heroics ' , Shadowheart scoffed softly, waving it away. ❝Don't think too much of it,❞ he said, keeping his tone casual. ❝The prison was on our route anyway. We would have gone there regardless.❞ He felt compelled to add, ❝And if the risk had been too great, I wouldn’t have pursued it.❞

Partially a LIE, but Shadowheart needed to frame it this way — for himself & for Shar. The Dark Lady didn’t look fondly upon acts of kindness for kindness’ sake alone. No... this had been practical. Strategic thinking. Securing allies against common enemies.

The white werewolf’s jaw was big enough to snap Osian’s whole head clean off, but he had been getting better at managing his feral side. Fortunately!! Because the shift had hit him out of nowhere in the middle of their passion. Now there was a huge werewolf in their bed, the frame creaking under his weight.

He whined, ears folded. This was so embarrassing! ( @umbralitany 🤭)

Osian was more than glad that he had quickly learned the signs of a shift. The shifts tended to be sudden, but there were telltale signs before hand. Perhaps it was a good thing they were currently laying with each other when it happened... Osian was hyper aware of his partners reaction - wanting to be aware of what he wanted changed, or what he liked. So he noticed when Shadowheart become much hotter than usual, even for being in mid-romp. How the groans became more like a growl.

He had just enough time to safely exit and jump back, right on the edge of the bed. A small Wood Elvish exclamation as he went, something along the lines of 'By Rillifane's branches!'. But it was quickly obvious Shadowheart was in control... and embarrassed.

Smiling, he reached for his robe and threw it over himself, holding it closed as he walked around the bed and kneeled down by Shadowheart's head, reaching over to run his hand through the pale fur, a soft chuckle in his voice. "It's alright, cariad. Perk those ears up, it's okay. It can't be helped. Maybe I'll take it as a compliment, even, that you lost control midway, hm?" He grinned, trying to lighten the mood.

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ A soft, throaty sound escaped him as he buried his muzzle against Osian.

His ears stayed pressed flat to his head as he nuzzled into the wizard’s arm, then caught the skin gently between his sharp canines, so carefully, before soothing the spot with a slow, warm lap of his tongue. Then another. And another.

This was absolutely not the moment———! Yet despite the shame still gnawing at him, clawing at his mind relentlessy, he could not suppress the searing heat that coursed through his veins ; perhaps even more fiercely than before.

ㅤㅤㅤ. . . Curse his feral heart.

A growl slipped free, his massive form coiled with barely contained hunger.

ᒥ🕷ᒧ— Rinnill offered a small smile hearing the tale of how the wine was acquired. It's quick to fall away when the discussion shifts to something more serious. The drow wasn't sure he was in the headspace for this, and so to encourage a more amicable mindset he drowns down the goblet with the desperation of a man finding water in the desert heat.

"Certainly," He paused to clear the rasp of the wine brought on away, "Not one of my usual quests...When the Nautiloid grabbed me, I was traveling in the North on a hunt for a Yeti that had recently devastated a village." Though not an easy feat, it was significantly less complicated than the adventure that had unfolded.

His scarlet eyes stared into his empty goblet, contemplating the questions. "I...I am unsure. Travel calls to me; I've never been one to settle down in one place for too long." Rinnill lets out a weary sigh, as if he already tired of the journey before it even began.

His grip on the goblet's stem tightens and his brows knit down in frustration. "...A part of me longs for the Underdark," He winces at the clenching of his own heart saying such a thing. "I don't believe I can face the fear the rules my mind when returning. The Surface is safe...My siblings will not search for me far beyond the Entrance tunnels. But finding home has felt impossible on the Surface..." Never before had he admitted these things to even himself, and Rinnill looked pained to be doing so.

"I felt peace and freedom once in my long life...During my escape while navigating the tunnels to the Surface. I felt unchained, I felt unburdened. Of course, the folly of my carelessness led to disaster," An onyx hand reached down, and he began to rub at his left knee. "And I haven't been able to find those feelings since."

🌑 . . . ╰──╮ Shadowheart listened, his brows furrowing as he absently swirled the red wine in his goblet. He stayed quiet for a long moment, letting Rinnill’s words settle, before giving a slow nod.

Once again he could relate.

ㅤ❝That’s… I understand that feeling.❞ He stared into his goblet, watching the firelight catch in the dark red surface. ❝Even though I’ve broken free of Shar’s chains, I don’t feel free either. In fact, I never have. Not once in my entire life. And right now, I am just terrified. I feel… lost.❞ A bitter scoff escaped him. ❝For all its cruelty, Shar’s leash at least gave me purpose and direction, and now all of that is gone. It shames me to admit, but I often find myself wondering what could have been…❞

If he hadn’t spared the Nightsong . . .

He trailed off & swallowed hard, then lifted his gaze to meet the drow’s. ❝Well. I think breaking free and figuring out what to do with that freedom are two different things... It turns out the latter can be just as diffcult.❞ He paused.

ㅤㅤ❝ . . . But I still chose to believe that freedom and happiness can be built ; little by little, with every choice we make.❞

I am a normal person who understands thought crimes are not real, fiction is not reality, and people can read/write/enjoy whatever they want as long as it’s fiction and no one in real life is harmed. I don’t have to like it, because I know how to mute, block and scroll past what I don’t want to see. Overall I think labels are childish, but by definition I am proship and profic. I am also against censorship.

And if you (general you) shame or harass real people over fiction, you’re a bully and this blog is not a safe place for you.
