I don't think I can ever put into words how much I just appreciate Mammon as a character

"Jerk with a heart of gold" is a trope that has been used over and over again, and while I usually like it well enough, OM! does it so well

They make it believable with Mammon and contextually they give us reasons to why he is the way he is.

And they don't drag out the illusion of the "Jerk" as along as I've seen other stories do. In around Lesson 4 they immediately start dismantling the "asshole" first impressions we made between Lesson 1 to 3 while still keeping Mammon as someone who is just naturally kind of a jackass

Also with the "Jerk with a heart of gold" trope the characters it involves tend to have this sort of uber "masculinity" where they keep things to themselves and don't talk about emotions or get emotional, they tend to be pessimistic and/or stoic, they don't ask for help etc

Mammon on the other hand is probably the most emotionally intelligent of his brothers and on multiple times he's been shown to be able to talk others down from spiralling negative thoughts, he's very emotional and wears his heart on his sleeve, MC describes him as "genuine and innocent", he's optimistic and bright and happy, he cries very easily and he doesn't keep secrets from MC, and he believes people should just ask for help when they're in trouble instead of bottling it up

He's not rough & tough and emotionally unavailable with his love interest either. He's very overt about how much he cares for them (whether he means to be or not), he goes out of his way to do nice things for them, he seems to care more about consent than even MC does. He's an extremely loving & caring partner while still maintaining the ability to be a little shit towards MC and tease 'em & give them hell

Mammon is still very much a jerk - like there's no doubt about it - he's just naturally someone who has fun by messing with others but he's not a jerk like everyone else is

Mammon's just a breath of fresh air to the trope and I love him for it
