me when my disabilities disable me:
A Rant About Living With PNES
Let me tell you about the most isolating, infuriating, misunderstood hellscape: living with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES).
You know whatâs wild? Having your body betray you in ways that leave you crumpled on the floor, shaking, gasping, or frozenâonly to have people (including doctors) side-eye you and say, âBut the tests are normal. Itâs just stress, right?â
Just stress.
As if stress isnât the quiet killer that carves its initials into your bones. As if surviving trauma, anxiety, depression, or whatever else brought this monster into your life isnât real enough to deserve compassion. My seizures arenât âfakeâ because they donât show up on an EEG. Theyâre my body screaming what my mind canât put into words. But nobody wants to hear that scream. They want a quick fix. A pill. A reason to look away.
And the worst part? The gaslighting. From yourself. âAm I doing this for attention? Why canât I just control it?â Shut. Up. Iâm so tired of the guilt that follows every episode. Tired of canceling plans, losing jobs, missing out on life because my nervous system decided today was a good day to play Russian roulette. Tired of people saying, âYou donât look sick,â as if chronic illness owes them aesthetics.
Oh, and letâs talk about âtreatment.â Therapy helps, sure, but itâs not a magic wand. Unraveling years of trauma while your body keeps score? Itâs like trying to defuse a bomb while blindfolded. And when a seizure hits in public? Cue the panicked stares, the 911 calls, the paramedics who donât believe you when you croak, âItâs not epilepsy.â The shame is a living thing.
Iâm not asking for pity. Iâm asking for people to stop conflating âpsychogenicâ with ânot real.â My seizures are real. The exhaustion is real. The fear is real. This isnât a performanceâitâs a prison.
To anyone else trapped in this invisible storm: I see you. I believe you. Your pain is valid, even when the world refuses to map it. Weâre not broken. Weâre survivors. And someday, the world will catch up.
Until then? Letâs rage, cry, and hold onto each other. Because sometimes thatâs all weâve got. ______
Highly Recommend This PNES Workbook
It's so funny to be diagnosed with "Pain We Can't Find The Source Of Disorder" or "Brain is Physically Fucked and we Don't Know Why Disorder" or "We Don't Know Why You Have Seizures Disorder" and instead of more research, tests, etc being performed, you're told to get Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Bonus points if your diagnosis of Exclusion was the 1st-3rd conclusion your doctor came to.
Can't believe I have a disorder that literally paralyzes me when I take psychic damage. My brain is so dissociation pilled that it disconnects from my body altogether. I get so overwhelmed my legs turn off. Brain starts sending the busy signal through the spinal cord. Think so hard I gotta use the wheelchair.
i think, for trauma survivors, especially those who were emotionally abused, invalidated, or gaslit, it is really important not to underestimate the significance of speaking bluntly about what happened to you. Forcing yourself not to beat around the bush, not to downplay what you went through with your words. say what happened, without any caveats, without any âbut it couldâve been worseâ, âbut i might just be being overdramaticâ, âbut it wasnât really THAT bad,â and so forth. sit with the discomfort until you can begin to let yourself realize that it WAS that bad, you WERENT being overdramatic, and even if it couldâve been worse you still didnât deserve it. Itâs almost like a form of reclamation, taking back your memories, taking back your life, even the difficult or gross parts, and refusing to let anyone change the narrative or tell you how you should feel anymore, even yourself. and it hurts and itâs scary and it feels weird and awkward and sometimes you want to convince yourself youâre lying, but i think sitting in those weird feelings and letting yourself admit that you really did go through trauma puts the power back in your hands to process things and be compassionate to yourself while you heal
âSheâs so sweet sheâs always going out of her way to help othersâ quick someone give that girl all the love and safe space she deserves before being âsweetâ (pathological people pleasing as a trauma response) destroys her and leaves behind a bitter empty shell of a person
actually, to have the audacity to live, to take up space, is the scariest and most rewarding gift you can give yourself.
"love is love" until it doesn't include sex
"love is love" until it lives in separate beds
"love is love" until it is queer platonic
"love is love" until it does not comply with compulsory sexuality and amatonormativity
love IS love, for aspecs, for sex repulsed folk and for platonic relationships
"love is love" apply to more than same-sex relationships in a world where romantic and sexual relationships are considered more valuable
Remember to advocate for Asexuals and Aromantics this pride. Because we are also here, and we are also queer
The man several years older than you who calls you "more mature than your own age" is grooming you. The man who says you are "special" or "unique" is grooming you. The man who calls you an "old soul" is grooming you.
These are grooming phrases.
The man several years older than you who keeps circling back to "Gosh, I can't believe you're real! But are you sure you want this? I'm so much older than you!" when you're cuddling or making out is grooming you. He is asking you that question during intimate moments as a way to unconsciously manipulate you into denial and perhaps get you to reassure whatever guilt he has, if he has any. Asking this while showering you with affection is an attempt to bait and coerce you into saying yes. Whether done unconsciously or consciously, he is fulfilling an emotional need you have for love or protection while at the same time getting you to say out loud to yourself and to him that you want this in order to work your brain into ignoring any bad gut feeling or doubt you have, then or in the future.
That is grooming behavior.
I understand that you might not want this to be true, and that you feel pulled to him. I understand it might feel more parental or brotherly than it does sexual or romantic. But this is how grooming works in many, many cases. The attachment or relationship fulfills a psychological need or wound you had from a parent or a sibling. His behaviors might very well be fatherly or brotherly, and then over time those little interactions blur into something else that you can't quite make sense of but that you like.
That magnetic, psychological pull you feel is not a sign of healthy attachment or a healthy relationship. You can be groomed as a child, you can be groomed as a teen, you can be groomed as a 20 year old.
And, yes, this goes for lesbians, bisexuals, gay men too. I speak with heterosexual situations in mind because there is a depressing, astounding pattern of heterosexual men grooming women and girls younger than them. But I have encountered plenty of gay men and lesbians in horrible codependent relationships that they feel simultaneously both trapped in and glued to.
