In the last month I went to my primary care doctor. Within 30 seconds of the appointment starting, she told me she was going to use AI for my patient notes. I told her that makes me uncomfortable.

She told me she understands, and that she held out for as long as she could, but that now she quite literally cannot take notes and put them in the system without AI. Whoever her higher-ups are, or whoever their higher-ups are, made it so that she literally cannot abstain from using AI in her medical practice. The same AI that is known to hallucinate problems or factors, who cannot write things from a human or medical perspective.

The compromise we came to is that we both go over the notes at the end and correct any errors- of which there were about 3. 3 isnt a lot but in a medical setting it could mean the difference between insurance approval or denial of treatment, or a specialist knowing what is wrong or not.

Just felt like this was important to share, because why on earth are doctors not allowed to take their own fucking notes?

I forgot to mention: the AI notes required my entire appointment to be voice recorded. Getting healthcare required me to consent to AI capturing my voice and health information.

I think especially adults need to start being like. 10 times more conservative with who and when and where we mention suicide and or sudden death around. Like i just had someone in my life pass from suicide and have been randomly reminded of it from people around me casually mentioning suicide or sudden death and i just think. Hey maybe that's not an appropriate subject to just spring on someone that you don't know what they could be going thru. Just food for thought ig.

when you treat being disabled primarily as an identity over being a class then you get this sort of misunderstanding that happens when disabled people disagree with each other. because the disabled identity is supposed to give credence to their opinions; how "true" their opinion is becomes irrevocably linked to how legitimate their experiences are as a disabled person, and thus their validity as a disabled individual. so dismissing their viewpoint on a disability issue - maybe because they have only based it on their own experiences, or are talking about a disability they don't experience, or for any other reason - is seen as if you are saying that "you're not a real disabled person actually." so you get people angrily replying by listing out every difficulty and grievance they have ever faced in a bid to prove that their experiences are legitimate enough to qualify them as being disabled. this unfortunately misses the point - you can be disabled and still be wrong about disability or other disabled people - and instead comes across as some sort of suffering contest. which, in of itself, is gauche, but which also created the unspoken expectation that every disabled person who doesn't detail their struggles in intimate detail are somehow lying or not experiencing any such troubles. which is simply not true. disabled people on the whole are already fighting to keep their privacy intact from invasive questions and rude, entitled strangers and it doesn't do anything good to contribute to eroding that privacy

Has anyone even tried that "Tell your doctors to note in your chart that they're refusing you testing and they'll do what you want them to" Bc no offense it sounds like the medical equivalent of "Cops have to tell you they're cops if you ask" And i can almost guarantee my doctors wouldn't write that in my chart and probably would have me labeled as a difficult patient if i did that

Also i finally had surgery with an actual specialist in november to remove my stage 3 endometriosis. As of last month my periods are offically pain free.

I have Tourette syndrome. My disability is not a punchline. I need you to understand that while some individual tics can be humorous, the condition as a whole is not. You have no idea the struggles that TS causes. The social isolation, the co-morbid conditions, the injuries and bruises, the discomfort of merely existing in my body. It is not a fun thing to have, and it should not be thrown around like some inconsequential part of a person’s life.

there's something about how people talk about ableism online that feels somewhat divorced from the reality that ableism is a form of violent oppression that gets disabled people killed, assaulted, and brutalised in real life. that it causes medical neglect, abuse, and structural inequality. that disabled people are, on the whole disenfranchised. and it's not like verbal interpersonal ableism "doesn't matter" in the face of the "real stuff" because all forms of ableism contribute towards dehumanising and isolating disabled people, which in turn makes them more vulnerable to the violence i mentioned. but it's like, do you guys remember the violence exists? that it's not just people being upset over words "for no reason"? there's a glaring reason right in front of us if you bother to look
