@unaussprechbarlich
Danke Luisa.
Recently, Unaussprechbarlich was part of the 4th KloHäuschen Biennial. Realised in collaboration with the Garten Laube in Ottobrun, the biennale had the subtitle “Von Ottoburn Lernen” and the concept “displaying strategies” - the artists were invited to display parts of a work, already presented elsewhere, that are usually hidden or invisible.
With Unaussprechbarlich, there is a mountain of “invisible” material - i won’t say it’s hidden, because most of it is on this website, but it’s not visible in the performance. Some of it is - in the form of texts spread around the walls or floor of the performance space for the audience to read - but there’s a lot more that isn’t there: videos, images, links, stray thoughts, random quotations, tangential bits of research, and performative experiments. We chose one of these performative experiments, and one piece of real-time non-translation writing (could also be called a performative experiment, perhaps?).
The Dirndl Napkins were displayed in the first part of the biennale, at the Garten Laube in Ottobrun. Early on in our creative process we had a lot of fun with the napkins, trying on a costume as one tries on a language. However in the end, we didn’t find a place in the performance for the napkins. They were displayed at Ottobrun, and at the opening of the exhibition they were offered to the public, with the invitation to “mach dein eigene Dirndl Selfie.” This proved to be a great attraction, with many people continuing to wear their napkin for the rest of the evening, not just for a selfie. Biennaleleiterin Anja Uhlig models her dindl napkin above.
In the second part of the Biennale, at Das KloHäuschen, we displayed the Frenglerbski text. This was written by Helen in 2003, at the INFANT Theatre Festival in Nove Sad, when she was sitting at a forum without an English translator. A Serbian dance company were speaking about their work, and beside Helen sat one of the panelists, a French director, who had someone translating from Serbian to French for her. Understanding almost nothing of either language, Helen took her pen and wrote what she (thought she) heard. The result is Frenglerbski, an extract of which can be found here. This text also isn’t used in the performance Unaussprechbarlich, but it represents a moment in Helen’s linguistic journey and an exploration of the mutability and creativity of language. All languages are made up, and all languages mutate over time. Frenglerbski and Helledeutsch are two languages that Helen has made up.
These are just two of the many fragments that have composted and contributed to the greater whole of Unaussprechbarlich. As it continues to marinate and evolve, it’s been great to pull back the cover and reveal a little of the mulch underneath, and of course to participate in the wonderful Biennale!
German loanwords in other languages.
K
Kafka does not opt for a reterritorialization through the Czech language. Nor toward a hypercultural usage of German with all sorts of oneiric or symbolic or mythic flights (even Hebrew-ifying ones), as was the case with the Prague School. Nor towards an oral, popular Yiddish. Instead, using the path that Yiddish opens up to him, he takes it in such a way as to convert it into a unique and solitary form of writing. Since Prague German is deterritorialized to several degrees, he will always take it farther, to a greater degree of intensity, but in the direction of a new sobriety, a new and unexpected modification, a pitiless rectification, a straightening of the head. Schizo politeness, a drunkenness caused by water. He will make the German language take flight on a line of escape. He will feed himself on abstinence; he will tear out of Prague German all the qualities of underdevelopment that it has tried to hide; he will make it cry with an extremely sober and rigorous cry. He will pull from it the barking of the dog, the cough of the ape, and the bustling of the beetle. He will turn syntax into a cry that will embrace the rigid syntax of his dried-up German. He will push it toward a deterritorialization that will no longer be saved by culture or by myth, that will be an absolute deterritorialization, even if it is slow, sticky, coagulated. To bring language slowly and progressively to the desert. To use syntax in order to cry, to give a syntax to the cry. (Deleuze & Guattari 1986: 23)
How many people today live in a language that is not their own? Or no longer, or not yet, even know their own and know poorly the major language that they are forced to serve? This is the problem of immigrants, and especially of their children, the problem of minorities, the problem of a minor literature, but also a problem for all of us […]. (Deleuze & Guattari 1986: 19)

If you want to know more about Yahya Hassan the Palestinian Danish poet you need to do your own research. I am troubled but like the anger and fragility of his language.

Freitag 10.11.2017 16 Uhr Performance: UNAUSSPRECHBARLICH - Annie Abrahams, (NL/FR) & Helen Varley Jamieson (NZ/GE)
4:30 pm Forum: Women in movement; the challenge of integration: Body, language and immigration
Antagon Halle, Orberstrasse 57, Frankfurt am Main.
Ones body and language also create ones identity. The role of the women differs from country to country and region to region. In the present moment of immigration, this silently accepted role suddenly is questioned. How does the concept of the woman change within different countries? How can these women, who are moving away from their homeland, react to this question? How do we, as women, move within the cosmopolitical world? To get to know another culture creates challenges, that we can only face individually.
The performance of the artists Abrahams and Jamieson deals with exactly this experience to live in between different cultures and in other countries. Invited for a conversation: Annie Abrahams (biologist, net-artist and pioneer of thenetworking performance-art from Netherlands), Helen Varley Jamieson (writer, theatre-maker, digital artist from New Zealand and member of the board of Magdalena Project), Violeta Luna (performative artist and activist from Mexico, living in San Francisco), Ute Bansemir and Ewgenija Weiß (director of „theaterperipherie“).

urgency of speech
“At a time when news journalists say "...it is hard to tell what President Trump's words mean, Unaussprechbarlich seems timely. What comes across in this performance by Helen Varley Jamieson & Annie Abrahams is the urgency of speech: for Helen it is to speak accurate German, a task she partly entrusts to her Macbook, prompting her digital doppelganger to speak for and with her. Annie, by contrast is left pacing, drawing on walls and screaming out what she knows, what she wants to say, and what she remembers; she waits for echoes that will prompt her to some deeper meaning having long since given up on accuracy. What spoke to this audience member in this hypnotic work, were the underlying feelings and subtexts that weave beneath and beyond the structure of grammar and syntax. In a post truth world, authenticity and accuracy are the twin chambered beating heart of communication.” Karla Ptáček (one of the founding members of Avatar Body Collision, {Avatar Body Collision}) after having seen unaussprechbarlich in Pathos Münich last October 2016.

Performance: 14. Oktober 2016
“Unaussprechbarlich” passt sehr gut zum Magdalena München Thema, "In Between". Wir schaffen "a space/room of understanding that exists in-between or even beyond the sense of words".
An approach / a program.
Christina Maria Pfeifer, who was present at our third performance, recently sent us some very welcome feedback:
(1) Title: I’d like to mention 1st that the title ‚unaussprechbarlich‘ is excellent. It is right to the point! it reflects the high potential of the Germany language to create words and by creating you can get mixed up like ‚unaussprechbarlich‘ does. However, everybody who speaks German will understand. And at the same time your creation is sort of poetic and a little Dada when spoken out. Thus speaking sound-wise to non-Germany speaker as well. To sum up: Unaussprechbarlich could be more than a title for an art project, it could be the title of an approach or a program. I loved it from the 1st moment on and understood intuitively what the work was about without being fixed in a mind set of expectations. (2) Mix of languages: The almost random mix of languages (there could be even more, others etc.) seamed to me very European as well as very contemporary. We today live a global Babel everywhere and anytime, in particular on the web and in the social net-works. A basic understanding of foreign languages is not any longer a pre-condition to communicate with each other. We all use on-line translators and Asian people use latin letters to be translated into their letters on the screen. So in your performance the mix of languages and the mix of representations by different media (pronunciation by humans and machines, typing, screening, projection, singing, etc.) transforms the global Babel into a piece of art. This piece of art is fluid, unstable, a collage of mixed layers, intuitive, enlightening, (un-)decodable and funny. (3) Meaning and sense: The performance articulates an ‚old‘ discussion in the arts: the question of meaning and sense. This question is of course related to language and communication, to psychology as well. However, your performance is not an academic, linguistic discussion or psychological approach. It is linked to it but only in the 3rd layer, softly, playfully, intelligent. It remains in the 1st place an art performance and offers an aesthetic and sensual experience. In the 2nd place it opens up a space/room of understanding that exists in-between or even beyond the sense of words. Es ist etwas Unaussprechbares. Vielleicht das Unaussprechbare schlechthin. We as participants of the performance deal with it, we get in touch with it, we play with it and enjoy it. Thus, we enjoy something what we are often scared of. This is great performance art!
Thanks again Christina Maria!

Ausschnitt vom unaussprechbarlich Performance Skript. Bald werden wir ein completes Skript publizieren.

UNAUSSPRECHBARLICH Variationen des Mißverstehens (work - in - progress)
Performance von und mit Annie Abrahams und Helen Varley Jamieson
The one who had to learn a new language, who had an accent, who was difficult to understand, the one the others had difficulty paying attention to because she spoke slowly and had bad grammar. The “broken” one. But also the outsider, the one with distance, the one who didn’t know the rules, and so wasn’t obliged to follow them, the one who could also be free.
Performance 40 min. Anschließender Diskussion.

Waldberta - erste Versuch - X Y Z und A.
Feind / Freund Sprache - Effektives schreiben
