Rétrospective de l'année (2019)

Wow. 2019. Je ne sais même pas où commencer. Cette année était importante pour La Poison et La Pomme. Nous avons terminé deux grand projets et nous avons débuté deux autres. Nous avons travaillé et collaboré avec beaucoup de jeunes personnes - oratrices, orateurs, graphistes, youtubeurs, cinéastes, photographes; nous avons grandi notre équipe à travers les emplois d’été et les stagiaires; et nous avons laissé un impact sur le plan environnemental au Canada.

Les Forces de la Nature

2019 était l’année terminale pour ce grand projet qui a lancé notre organisme. « Les Forces de la Nature: L’Enfant de Gaïa » est une allégorie remplie de magie et de danger qui explore notre connexion avec la nature. Cette oeuvre, issue d’un travail d’équipe, vise à promouvoir la protection de l’environnement et ce à travers les péripéties de personnages hétéroclites. Nous avons commencé ce projet en 2017. Ça fait deux ans. Nous avons travaillé sur ce projet pour deux ans! C’est fou ça!

Mais oui. Je me rappelle ce jour-là en juillet 2017 quand j’ai téléphoné à Sam afin de lui parler de m’aider écrire une bande dessinée. Tout d’abord, nous avons cherché le financement. J’ai assisté au sommet Génération Plein Air par MEC où j’ai partagé mon idée devant un panel des gens importants de MEC. J’ai eu 3 minutes de les convaincre et je n’y ai pas réussi. Mon idée était trop différente. Trop « out of the box ». Mais j’ai fait des bons ami(e)s et je suis resté au contact.

Quelques mois plus tard, en janvier 2018, j’ai reçu deux bonnes nouvelles: (1) MEC a décidé de financer mon idée; et (2), je venais d’être accepté joindre la première cohorte de Portail océan. Avec ce parrainage, nous avons écrit, révisé, rérévisé et rérérévisé un texte rempli d’amour pour la lectrice/le lecteur, pour la nature et pour l’ensemble de la jeunesse canadienne. Nous avons intégré nos âmes dans les mots, nos esprits dans les phrases et nos coeurs dans le message.

En janvier 2019, nous avons reçu les illustrations d’Andie Lafrentz et nous étions en train de bosser pour rérédiger le texte dans la langue de Molière (pas une traduction, mais une écriture à nouveau) pour assurer que notre histoire était disponible pour le Canada dans son entier avec ses deux langues officielles. Vickie Arsenault s’est joint à l’équipe afin de nous aider. Après la finalisation des textes dans les deux langues, on était prêt de tout mettre ensemble. Ceci était le travail de Sara Qarizada, graphiste extraordinaire de l’Université OCAD. Nous avons également décidé d’offrir une version audio, encore pour être plus inclusif. Nous avons envie de partager l’histoire avec celles et ceux qui ne peuvent pas, ou qui n’aiment pas lire. Pour la voix en anglais, nous étions chanceux d’obtenir Zico He, youtubeur de Toronto; et pour la voix en français, c’était Gabriel Tougas, cinéaste franco-manitobain.

En avril 2019, nous étions prêts et le 2 avril 2019, nous avons lancé notre livre. Voici où vous pouvez le trouver.

Dans le cadre du lancement de notre livre, nous avons organisé deux fêtes: une à Edmonton, et l’autre à Montréal. Les deux étaient des grands succès et je suis reconnaissant de tout le monde qui nous a aidé dans la planification et l’exécution des événements.  

Projet Snorkel

Cette année j’ai eu le grand plaisir de travailler avec mon ami Curtis Onaczyszyn et son amie Taylor Penzes! Faisant partie de la nouvelle cohorte de Portail océan, Taylor a conceptualisé l’idée d’un projet visant à nettoyer les lits des rivières et des bassins-versants au sud-ouest de l’Ontario: Projet Snorkel.

Ils sont venu me voir et ensemble, nous avons ajouté quelques éléments: une serie sur YouTube pour sensibiliser les gens sur ce qu’ils ont trouvé dans leurs sessions de nettoyage; un rapport après chaque nettoyage pour renseigner la municipalité en charge sur le statut de la nature sur sa protection, fournissant quelques conseils pour maintenir la propreté de l’endroit; et, un nettoyage communautaire pour rassembler la communauté locale autour de leur bassin-versant.

Ce projet a été choisi parmi des milliers autour du monde pour faire partie d’une exposition de la créativité jeunesse pour combattre les changements climatiques au sein du Sommet Action Climat à New York City! Curtis et Taylor ont touché plus de 40 jeunes personnes à travers l’été et leur travail ont affecté de centaines de personnes.

En avril, nous avons eu le plaisir d'accueillir Vivian Walsh comme notre responsable de réseaux sociaux! Elle a pris contrôle de nos comptes Instagram et Facebook ainsi que notre blogue!

En octobre, trois nouvelles stagiaires se sont joint à l’équipe: Emily Hachmer, Shayna Cacciotti et Helen Mauch. Elles sont engagées pour nous aider construire nos projets pour l’année 2020. Donc, restez à l'affût!

Introduction to Helen

Ever since I was very young, I have been so fortunate to be immersed in nature so much so that I have now created a strong and everlasting relationship with the environment. My family property backs onto a preservation park, which is where I grew up exploring nature. I spent most of my childhood leisure time outdoors, running through the forest, watching the seasons change, and building bridges and forts along the creekside. My family vacations were camping vacations. Yes, I know, I think that camping is a vacation. I’ve explored many of Ontario’s provincial parks, especially enjoying the new Provincial Park passport collecting badges and stickers. It encourages me to get out and see even more. My family and I have also explored and camped in the eastern Canadian maritime provinces; my favorites were visiting Newfoundland and exploring the tides at Hopewell Rocks. These journeys are what I look forward to almost every day.

Little trips like visiting Gatineau Park on a weekend to go on a hike are the things that keep me going when it gets tough. Nature is so important to me that if I need a place to calm down and regenerate, any area with even a semblance of nature, be it a tree or river, are the features of nature that I am drawn to. Taking the time to sit and breathe amongst nature is just one of the simple things one can do to keep on track.

I document my visits to nature with various art forms, mostly through photography. I tend to only focus on the natural elements, often avoiding any and all traces of humanity from appearing in my photos, the same goes for most traditional art I produce. I do this because when I go to a natural area, I am not there for the people, I am there for the landscapes and the flora and fauna. Documenting wilderness is important to me. Capturing nature in its unedited, uninterrupted form is what I seek out in my photography. That’s not saying I don’t take photos of people whom I love, I just keep those more for myself rather than sharing them with the world.

Since many may not have been so fortunate to establish connections with the natural world as I had while growing up, I want to be able to share my love for nature and the environment with others in the hopes that we can all help change the world for the better. My love for the natural world is something that I wish to be able to share, and, in doing so, encourage other people to build their own connections. We all come from nature and no matter the places we live or the things we do, we all should have the opportunity to return to it.

I am currently attending the University of Ottawa and working hard to get a BA in Environmental Studies.

Introduction to Shayna Cacciotti

Hello! My name is Shayna. I am a student at the University of Ottawa, studying Geography and Geomatics with a minor in Indigenous Studies. I hope to one day be a high school teacher! I am a new research assistant for La poison et la pomme, working on a very exciting project with my partner, Emily. In the summers I work as a beekeeper and during the school year I work in outdoor retail. I love the outdoors and all the experiential learning opportunities that can be found spending time outside. I find that time outside can be healing and calming, or heart-pounding and challenging, and I value both of these experiences equally.

I spend most of my time doing homework, but when I am able to claw my way out from under the pile of readings (wow, am I a slow reader), I like to do a lot of things: painting, drawing, embroidery, yoga, running, climbing, nature walks, everything! I also love spending time with my family, my friends, and my pets. Continuous learning is a must, as I believe it is the most important part of life and personal growth. If you aren’t learning, what are you doing?

In the past, I have worked as an outdoor educator and I loved the freedom and organic learning children, youth and adults alike were able to partake in. I was able to see kids explore new leadership opportunities that had otherwise not been within their reach in traditional school settings. This experience reaffirmed what I had already known about the power of nature, and it was incredibly enriching.

My favourite activities to do outside include hiking and backpacking, running and just hanging out, enjoying the space around me. There is something about type two fun – the fun that is really not fun during the activity but always seems more fun in memory – that is especially intoxicating. Working incredibly hard just to bring yourself from point A to point B for literally no reason at all is weirdly… thrilling. Nothing else in the world matters! The freedom of allowing myself to be in nature without any other distractions is like a factory reset for my emotional and psychological health.

I plan to bring the love I have for nature into my work with LPLP, and I am grateful for the experience and creative freedom we get to exercise working with a young organization. I am excited for what’s to come and for the learning, growing and challenges we will get to accomplish along the way. It was a pleasure to meet you!

Introduction à Emily Hachmer

Salut tout le monde ! Moi, je suis Emily Hachmer et je suis une des nouvelles bénévoles pour La Poison et La Pomme. Je serai une assistante de recherche et j’ai hâte de commencer les travaillaux. Je suis une étudiante de troisième année à l’université d’Ottawa dans le programme des études environnementales avec un mineur de l’administration publique. Je viens de Muskoka, Ontario, alors j’étais née au bord de la nature. J’ai une connexion fondamentale avec la nature et spécifiquement les forêts.

Le but de ma vie est de protéger la terre. Je sais que c’est une phrase optimiste et une phrase un peu folle, mais je veux le faire et puis je vais changer le monde. J’ai de grandes expectations pour ma vie, mais je pense que ce n’est pas impossible. Rien est impossible. Je veux travailler pour le gouvernement canadien pour faire le changement dans les politiques environnementales. Je pense que les organisations non gouvernementaux, comme La Poison  et La Pomme, sont aussi tellement important parce que le gouvernement ne peut pas tout faire. J’ai hâte de faire les projets avec cette organisation et de changer le monde!

Un peu à propos de moi est mes expériences naturelles: La première fois que j’ai fait du camping, j’ai eu 6 semaines. Je faisais du camping chaque année avec ma famille. J’ai fait du camping en températures chaud (35 °C) et froid (-42 °C). J’ai fait du camping dans toutes les saisons, et dans 9/10 province du Canada (j’ai encore besoin d’aller à Terre-Neuve et Labrador). Je sais que j’ai beaucoup de privilèges pour faire les choses en haute. Je ne veux pas que toutes les personnes aient la même connexion avec la nature de moi, mais avec La Poison et La Pomme, je veux que tous trouvent leur propre connexion.

How destigmatizing waste and the dumpster can help save the planet

A few weeks back I shared a Swap Saturday post to our social media that suggested participants in the next climate strike source their materials from the recycling bins, or dumpsters, rather than buying new poster board. You see, I was raised by a man that may as well have “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” tattooed across his chest. So, finding use from materials that someone else has deemed garbage is not foreign to me. That’s why it only made sense to me when I saw it really popularizing as a phenomenon in mainstream environmental conversation. Search dumpster diving on YouTube and you will find a plethora of videos of people sifting through dumpster bins, primarily behind shopping centres and apartment complexes. Environmentalists have been endorsing dumpster diving in mainstream conversation for its circular economic properties. The circular economy is an economic model that has been proposed to replace the traditional linear model (i.e. make, use, dispose) for one that works to help save the planet from ecological collapse. The model proposes “we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.”

The concept of reusing ‘waste’ for new products is hardly new. In fact, in 2013, Waste Management, “North America’s largest environmental solutions provider and leading residential recycler,'' announced they would be transitioning from a waste collection company to a ‘resource management’ company, responsible for the breakdown and reuse of materials. Transitioning to a resource management company exemplifies the idea of a circular economy for it bonds (or connects) the end of the production chain with the very beginning of the production chain, as depicted in the graphic above. Considering the company responsible for collecting the waste is now interested in having materials that can be repurposed for profits, rather than materials that cannot easily be repurposed and, therefore, bring no value to the company, leads to increased pressure on the producers to use better materials. By better, I mean materials that can be easily repurposed so that they can be used once again. Moreover, Waste Management could incentivize producers to only use materials that can be repurposed through a working partnership. Having the beginning of the production chain linked to the end of the production chain is central to the idea of a circular economy.

Back in 2013, Jo Confino conversed with long-time environmentalist William McDonough addressing the immediate demands for alternative conversation about waste, and how reshaping mainstream conversation is necessary for a healthier planet (find the article here). According to Confino, “waste implies that the material has been contaminated - it is dirty and may bring me harm if I am to use it.” In their conversation, McDonough recommends omitting the use of waste in reference to used materials altogether. Flash forward six years and we are at last seeing a shift in mainstream conversation about waste, in that there is an obvious attempt to significantly disrupt how people think of items as contaminated to instead thinking of them as having the potential for reuse. This is largely a result of the euphemistic language widely employed by environmentalists. For example, an environmentalist named Talara Blackwood of Australia refers to herself as an “urban forager” (watch her interview here) in reference to her work searching for and repurposing materials that have been deemed ‘waste’. Ideally, by reshaping how society interacts with what is considered garbage, as a whole, we should see a significant decrease in the amount of material sent to landfills.  

All in all, decoding society’s disgust for garbage is essential in understanding how best to influence societal change in the repurposing of materials. Understanding the perceived relationship between individuals and waste is absolutely necessary for positively influencing that relationship in the environment’s favour. This is not to say that you won’t find some gnarly items in dumpster bins and that precautions shouldn’t be taken - always wear gloves and good shoes if sifting through dumpster bins - but it is to say that there are “diamonds in the rough” and that not nearly all materials that end up in dumpsters, and landfills, should be there. Like any systemic change, dumpster diving and destigmatizing waste is a movement that started with just a few people. Luckily, we are starting to witness these values being adopted by society at large and I am eager to see how this phenomenon of dumpster diving contributes to decreasing the amount of reusable material sent to landfills.

Le Déchétarisme

Dumpster diving, ou comme on dit dans le bon français, le déchétarisme, le glanage alimentaire ou le trésordure, est l’acte de fouiller dans les poubelles des magasins de grande distribution et des restaurants. Ceci afin de réduire les coûts impliqués dans la vie et/ou soutenir une économie circulaire — le recyclage à son meilleur. Cependant, cette pratique est trempée de stigmas sociaux.

D’abord, on commence par la terminologie. En anglais, le terme « Dumpster diving » est un terme polyvalent. Le moment que vous cherchez dans les déchets pour quelque chose, c’est le dumpster diving ; mais en français, en tant que la belle langue compliquée de Molière qu’on connait et qu’on adore, il y a des nuances. Le « glanage alimentaire » est par rapport à la nourriture, le dumpster diving dans le contexte de chercher un repas. Le « trésordure » essaie de comprendre le concept de fouiller dans les poubelles sans un but précis, vous ne cherchez rien en particulier. Vous êtes ouvert(e) à tous afin d’obtenir un trésor. Et puis, nous avons « le déchétarisme » qui donne nom aux personnes qui font le dumpster diving.

Vivian, notre stagiaire ici à La Poison et La Pomme (vous pouvez lire un peu sur elle ici), a lancé son initiative « samedi de swap ». Un jour par semaine, elle nous encourage de changer une facette de notre vie afin de vivre plus en harmonie avec la nature. Une semaine, elle a suggéré le déchétarisme et comme réaction automatique, j’étais dégouté. Pourquoi ?

Le déchétarisme contient les éléments de classicisme : l’idée des pauvres personnes qui ont besoin de fouiller dans les poubelles des riches afin de survivre ; les sans-abris qui ont besoin de glaner pour la nourriture ; bref, c’est vu comme une action des gens ayant une mauvaise réputation socioculturelle, des gens défavorisés. Il y a un élément de racisme. C’est une action qui est souvent liée à l’ethnicité la plus défavorisée dans une société, souvent (au Canada) les autochtones à l’ouest et les noir.e.s à l’est.

Donc après un moment d’hésitation, j’ai décidé de me rappeler de la fois où je me suis installé à Calgary après avoir trouvé mon premier boulot suit à mes études de baccalauréat. L’entreprise qui m’a embauché était en train de déménager et elle m’a offert tous leurs anciens meubles (elles avaient l’intention de les jeter) et j’ai accepté, très content d’épargner un peu d’argent. Quelle est la différence de cette situation et le déchétarisme ? Le fait que j’ai intercédé avant que ces meubles soient arrivés à la poubelle ?

Il faut toujours évaluer nos perspectives afin de comprendre pourquoi on méprise quelque chose. Macklemore, avec sa chanson Thrift Shop, a rendu les friperies cools. Maintenant c’est la tendance d’aller aux friperies lorsqu’on a besoin de vêtements ou même seulement pour faire la lèche vitrine. Cette fois-ci, on demande aux gens de recycler d’autres affaires, de profiter des poubelles afin de trouver de vrais trésors.

Donc, êtes-vous prêt(e) à relever le défi ?

Souvenirs du Proje[c]t Snorkel · Memories of Proje[c]t Snorkel

C’est difficile à croire qu’au fil des cinq mois, l'idée du Proje[c]t Snorkel s'est transformé pour devenir réalité. Rétrospectivement, à travers toutes les épreuves et tous les succès que nous avons eu au long du projet, je peux honnêtement dire que j'ai grandi au niveau personnel et au niveau professionnel. En travaillant sur les multiples brouillons d'une proposition du projet, sur un communiqué de presse, sur les demandes de subvention, et sur des rapports, j’ai appris à prendre conscience des perspectives d’autres afin d’adapter ma façon d’écrire pour faciliter leur compréhension. Une grande victoire m’est arrivée le jour lorsque le Proje[c]t Snorkel a reçu une subvention financière de TakingItGlobal, voici la preuve que tout ce travail d'écriture en valaient la peine.

La Poison et La Pomme est un organisme bilingue et par conséquent, après avoir reçu l’approbation des documents en anglais, ce fut l’heure de les traduire en français. Au début, c’était sans doute un grand défi, mais après chaque document, le travail est devenu plus facile - mais bien sûr ça aide d’avoir quelqu'un qui révise mon travail dans les deux langues! Et regardez, maintenant j'écris un article de blogue en français! Après quatre mois, je ne suis pas encore très à l'aise en parlant la langue, mais montrez-moi un débutant qui est? Après toutes les heures que j’ai passé en étudiant le français, je trouve que je suis plus confiant en lisant la langue pour le moment. Cette capacité de la lire m’a beaucoup aidé quand j’avais besoin de finaliser les contrats pour la prestation de services. C’est beaucoup moins épuisant que quand j’avais besoin d’utiliser WordReference pour comprendre chaque mot. L’embauchement des contractuels était également une nouvelle expérience pour moi. J’étais nerveux au début, mais après l’avoir fait, ce dernier ne me semblait plus si mauvais.

La partie de ce projet qui m’a étonné le plus est à quel point la gestion des événements est difficile. J'ai pensé que ce dernier serait beaucoup plus facile qu'il s'est avéré être. J’ai pensé que beaucoup de gens seraient intéressés à nos événements communautaires. Apparemment personne se présentera s’ils ne sont pas au courant de l'événement. La commercialisation de l'événement jouait un grand rôle dans notre succès. J’avais besoin d’apprendre à approcher les municipalités, les organisations comme le Grand nettoyage des rivages Canadiens,  et les organes de presse à partager nos événements. Après tous les courriels et appels téléphoniques, nous avons réussi à obtenir des entrevues avec un journal et deux stations radio. Ce fut la première entrevue de radio que je n'ai jamais faite! Je me suis senti déjà malade à l'avance et pendant l’entrevue, j’étais un peu nerveux, mais en général l'entrevue s'est bien passée. La deuxième entrevue de radio s'est déroulée beaucoup mieux que la première. D’ailleurs, être sur la radio, c'était aussi l'une des ambitions de ma vie.

Après la commercialisation pour les événements de nettoyage ont été complétés, c'était l'heure de diriger l'événement. Comme n'importe quoi en vie, la première fois n'est généralement pas la meilleure. Pendant le premier accueil pour un événement communautaire, nous avons manqué de structure et ce n'était pas le mieux organisé... mais au fil et à mesure que le temps passait, je me suis habitué à gérer les événements et j’ai appris de chaque événement précédent afin de l’appliquer aux événements futurs.

Dans l'ensemble, d’être responsable du projet était très difficile parce qu'il y avait toujours de travail à faire: la rédaction d’un rapport, le correspondance par courriel, j’en passe. La journée au travail semblait de ne jamais terminer, mais c’était seulement parce que je voulais la réussite du présent projet. Quand ceci est arrivé, je me suis senti récompensé en tant que responsable et chef du projet. C'est aussi valorisant de voir à quel point les bénévoles qui ont assisté à nos événements communautaires ont été affectés - particulièrement celles et ceux qui ont fait leur premier nettoyage avec nous. Je suis heureux que c’est avec nous, Projet Snorkel, qu’ils ont eu cette nouvelle expérience dans la nature. Moi aussi, je pouvais apprécier la ligne de partage des eaux cet été en faisant le nettoyage avec la plongée avec masque et tuba (snorkelling). L’image des poissons dans leur habitat naturel me rend souriant et j’ai beaucoup profité de la saison estivale. Cependant, j’ai eu peur deux fois dans l'eau à cause de quelques écrevisses aventureuses. En réfléchissant sur ce projet né de passion, je suis ravie de voir à quel point ce projet a eu un impact positif sur les bassins hydrographiques du sud-ouest de l'Ontario et les communautés où nous avons visité!

My Summer as the Intern · Mon été comme stagiaire

Hello! My name is Vivian Walsh and I am The Poison and The Apple’s summer intern. Although I have not yet formally introduced myself on the blog, I have been working with the organization as their social media coordinator for about four months now. It has been a true pleasure to have grown with the organization; to see the content evolve simultaneously with the growing following has been an absolute thrill. I am grateful for this opportunity for I feel that very few opportunities would have provided me with half the experience I have acquired in my short time with The Poison and The Apple because very few organizations would have given me as much autonomy over my work as Sam and Chúk have. With this responsibility, I have been given the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them in a proactive manner. I am so thankful to Chúk and Sam for trusting me with managing their brand identity, I can’t wait to see how the organization continues to evolve.

A little about me: I was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. I am currently a student at the University of Ottawa studying Public Relations. I have always felt deeply connected to nature — my soul feels revitalized the moment I stop and acknowledge my natural surroundings, no matter where that may be. In my life, nature, of any form, is therapeutic. Although I constantly crave an escape from my urban dwellings, a walk in the local park always cures my city blues. Because I depend so heavily on nature for my personal wellbeing, protecting natural environments has always been of the utmost importance in my life. The mission of The Poison and The Apple to foster this same sense of responsibility to protect nature among all youth is what initially attracted me to the organization. Reinforcing the relationship between individuals and their natural surroundings is, in my opinion, the only hope for our environment; I have found that only when people feel personally threatened will they act.

This summer while working for The Poison and The Apple, I was granted the opportunity to see areas of the country I had not previously visited. Very soon after starting my position with the organization, we hosted our launch event of Gaia’s Child in Edmonton, which I attended. The trip was a whirlwind — I left Ottawa at 6:00 am on Sunday, May 19th, attended the launch event all day on the 20th of May, and then flew out of Edmonton at 1:00 am that evening. Although the trip was quick, I had SO much fun! I got to explore downtown Edmonton, meet new friends, and assisted in the fantastic launch event of Gaia’s Child! The event had a great turnout and the weather was perfect. It was a thrill to collaborate with the Edmonton and Area Land Trust for their bee workshop, FREE Fitness with their outdoor Bootcamp and the local MEC with their refreshment tent + scavenger hunt! I’m still in awe that this trip even happened — it often feels like a dream. I’m especially thankful to Sam’s sister and her sister’s partner for inviting me to stay in their home during my trip, and to Sam, for inviting me to come.

Nearly immediately after completing the Edmonton launch event for Gaia’s Child, it was time to begin preparing for the Montréal launch event, which occurred in early June. The Montréal event was a much different experience; I stayed alone in a hotel and had more free time than I had in Edmonton. This was my first time traveling completely alone and man oh man did I enjoy myself! It was a whole new experience being able to go anywhere and do anything, whenever I wanted! The first night of the trip I spent on a patio in Old Montreal drinking cocktails*, eating fancy food*, and working on my computer — it was a real ‘treat yourself’ moment and I LOVED it. The event was a great success; we had a survival workshop led by Laura Newman, a bike repair workshop led by MEC, refreshments provided by Chez Robin, and a group run led by Coureurs Montréal. Despite the rain, the event had a fantastic turnout. I quite enjoyed seeing how differently Sam and Chúk ran their respective events but how they were both uniquely successful and fun.

My final excursion of the summer was attending the Proje(c)t Snorkel cleanup in Brantford, ON, which happened in late July. Two of my friends came with me on the trip, one of which was from Brantford and invited us to stay in her parents’ home for the weekend. Friday afternoon we loaded up my mom’s car and headed down the 401 for Brantford. The cleanup happened to be on an extremely hot day, which limited the amount of time we were able to spend actually cleaning up. It was hard to breathe, let alone pick up garbage, but somehow we laughed the whole way through. We collected multiple bags full of garbage and even retrieved two abandoned shopping carts from the shoreline. We were rewarded with pizza, lemonade, and more laughing after the cleanup. The Brantford cleanup had the biggest turnout of Proje(c)t Snorkel’s cleanups and it was a blast! It’s been an absolute delight working with both Taylor and Curtis this summer. I admire how they always maintained an optimistic outlook and were extremely diligent throughout the entirety of their project; it is because of their consistent hard work that the project was such a success.

I am so thankful that I get to extend my internship with The Poison and The Apple for another four months. In a time when the global political landscape is a terrifying dichotomy between acknowledging/acting on the climate crisis and perpetuating the climate crisis, while we all watch our most vital natural lands burn and our planet chokes on the waste of our consumerism, I feel empowered working for an organization with the goal of mobilizing youth to resist and fight for necessary change. I’m excited to see just what a united front of youth can accomplish for this country and the world at large.

Introduction to · Introduction à Taylor Penzes

Hi, I’m Taylor!

For the past few months, I’ve been working under The Poison and The Apple, as a co-founder of Project Snorkel. In this blog, I’ll be touching on where I’ve come from, why it was important to create Project Snorkel, as well as the impact that Project Snorkel and the team at The Poison and The Apple has left on me.

I recently graduated into the rewarding field of Social Work, once I started my university career, I found myself wanting to create my own business – something that bridges the gap between social work and the environment, somewhere where people could use nature as their wholistic healer.

Over my four years studying at Wilfrid Laurier University, I noticed the parks were littered with waste, beaches were covered with plastic water bottles, and trails were peppered with cans. Everywhere people were allowed to go to for free was not well taken care of.

I wanted to bring people together with the environment, but our environment has also been so damaged by people, and I didn’t think our land had healed from our dangerous impacts.

But what about the underwater environment? As a past river guide, I noticed that the rivers were polluted with shopping carts, beer cans, food wrappings. These items were found both where outdoor hobbyists went through daily, but also remotely, where it’s unlikely to find any human activity.

Our shoreline collects everything that the floats on the water’s surface, but what about items that sink or that are too heavy to be carried away with floods?

Curtis, Project Snorkel’s co-founder and I spent last summer travelling throughout the country. We dove under waterfalls, where items easily became out of grasp from the owner’s hand. We collected over 15 things in a span of 15 minutes and decided to invest in an underwater metal detector to help us find things that lie beneath the substrate.

Curtis and Chuk met in the Ocean Bridge 2018 cohort after a memorable wilderness expedition in Haida Gwaii. Since then, they’ve been inseparable since and I’ve gotten to know Chuk both on a personal and professional level which I feel very grateful for.

After being accepted into the 2019 Ocean Bridge cohort, I developed friendships that would lend me the support I needed to bring Project Snorkel to light.

After reaching out to Chuk about this opportunity, he welcomed us to our team with open arms; we’ve gotten to be a very close-knit small team and I feel inspired by the work that Samantha and Chuk have done at The Poison and The Apple. Their perseverance and determination to make this non-for-profit be successful is like no other.

I’ve also been introduced to some kindred souls throughout the project: Vivian Walsh and Sam Kilpatrick have been a bright light in bringing Project Snorkel to the surface. Vivian has worked with us to organize our posts, schedules and timelines whilst Sam has photographed our cleanups so beautifully. Who knew picking up garbage could look so good?

As for logistics, with Chùk’s help, Curtis and I were able to register under his non-for-profit to apply for federal and provincial funding. We are mentored, pushed to reach outside of our comfort zones and guided throughout this process by both Chuk and Sam and are very thankful for the connections that we have made throughout this process.

Over the past few cleanups, we’ve brought together family, friends and new friends in both our home community of Brantford and remotely. We’ve also had a surprise visit from one of my fellow cohort members, Brody. I’ve been enjoying bringing together people who wouldn’t normally attend events like this, yet seeing their eyes light up when they hit a “GOLD MINE” of garbage aka my uncle Shawn.

The Poison and The Apple has brought together inspiring, bright, innovative people and has brought us together to create friendships and connections that will last.

Through it all, the team has been able to connect and hear one another out in times of happiness and frustration- we’re all in it together.

As for Project Snorkel, we have our last cleanup happening tomorrow morning in Goderich Ontario. We are both sad and excited, but it’s time to start a new chapter of our life (p.s. speaking of chapters, The Forces of Nature is available for download) and bring new ideas to the surface.

We absolutely cannot wait to see what new initiatives The Poison and The Apple brings to the table in the future and how they can help our beautiful home, Canada.

Joel Dragon Smith et la Nature

L'événement le plus marquant de ma vie, qui m'a valu le plus grand amour et le plus grand respect pour la terre et les animaux, a été le moment où ma famille se rendait dans le chalet de mes grands-parents sur la rivière Taltson. Nous y avons séjourné chaque automne pendant quelques semaines depuis ma naissance. Notre cabine est inaccessible sauf par hydravion, ce qui en fait le voyage annuel ultime pour se connecter à la terre. La nature entoure la cabane en rondins pour des kilomètres et des kilomètres. il est situé à une pause dans la rivière. Ainsi, lorsque nous prenons le bateau, nous pouvons descendre un long lac appelé Deskataway ou remonter la rivière Taltson. Nous chassons et pêchons pour nous nourrir. Les animaux sont nombreux. La faune est toujours un plaisir à voir et les rencontres impressionnantes avec eux sont fréquentes mais toujours excitantes. Un de ces souvenirs dont je me souviendrai toujours est celui qui s'est passé pendant une voyage, lorsque nous avons eu une belette qui traînait autour de notre cabine. Nous avons adoré avoir le petit animale enjoué autour. Lorsque nous avons eu notre orignal qui nourrirait notre famille jusqu'à l'année prochaine, nous lui avons mis un tronçon de viande derrière la cabane. Environ 15 pieds en arrière était notre bécosse. Je laissais toujours la porte ouverte quand je prenais des merdes, et un après-midi, alors que je travaillais, mon ami a trouvé son petit cadeau! Nous l'avions partiellement alourdi par un morceau de béton et il ne pouvait pas l'enlever. Je me suis assis sur le pot et je l'ai regardé lutter pendant environ 5 minutes jusqu'à ce qu'il obtienne enfin gratuitement! Maintenant, il le tire envers arrière, les fesses en premier, droit vers moi! C'était une lutte pour lui car le morceau de viande était plus gros que lui et assez hilarant à regarder! Il la poussa jusqu'à la porte ouverte de la bécosse, sans avoir la moindre idée que j'étais même là. Des expériences comme celle-ci me procurent beaucoup de joie. La nature est fascinante, remplie d'émerveillement et de beauté. Être dans la brousse me laisse toujours épanouie. Il me donne les meilleurs dors et les rêves les plus vifs.

J'aime la nature parce qu'elle augmente les sentiments agréables et réduit les émotions négatives. D’être dans la nature me permet d'atteindre mon plein potentiel. La nature m’apporte du réconfort et mon âme s’épanouit à l'intérieur. Sortir et s'éloigner des constructions humaines est l'un des moyens les plus efficaces que je connaisse pour me vider l'esprit et me échoué de la complexité de nos vies humaines quotidiennes. Jouer est très important pour moi et jouer à l’extérieur a toujours été le plus enrichissant pour moi. Je suis très actif, et la nature est le terrain de jeu idéal! l'imagination et la créativité peuvent fonctionner librement. Les cordes à linge se transforment en filets de volleyball, les bâtons en clubs de golf. En vieillissant, j'ai développé des passions qui m'emmenaient dehors, des passions qui me mettaient au défi mentalement et physiquement. Ils me poussent à repousser constamment mes propres limites. J'adore le snowboard, le wakeboard et le skateboard. Ces passions me gardent autour de la nature tout en faisant ce que j'aime. En plus des sentiments bénéfiques que la nature me procure, ces activités que je fais dans la nature augmentent la valeur que je reçois. Je suis toujours heureux de consacrer mon énergie et ma concentration à ces sports, améliorant constamment mes compétences de manière créative et saine, tout en m'amusant! Bien que beaucoup personnes ne croient pas que sauter à une trentaine de pieds sur une planche à neige tout en tournant un double revers pour un atterrissage à plat aussi paisible, mais pour moi, la méditation est l’adrénaline complétée par la nature.

J'apporte également mon amour pour le plein air dans ma vie professionnelle, en aidant les autres à faire l'expérience au dehors de manière positive. Je suis entraîneur de snowboard auprès d'enfants de Yellowknife, dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Cela me procure une grande satisfaction d’encourager les enfants de jeune âge à trouver quelque chose qu’ils aiment à l’extérieur. Je travaille aussi avec ma sœur, Chloé sous un programme appelé Bush Kids, qui amène les enfants à l’extérieur une fois par semaine pendant toute la journée, au lieu de leurs salles de classe, ce qui leur permet de faire l’expérience d’une éducation basée sur la recherche en plein air. Le travail principal que je fais concerne d’une entreprise créée par ma mère il y a quelques années, appelée Aurora Heat. Nous croyons fermement en une vie en harmonie avec le monde naturel. Nous créons des produits traditionnels pour la chaleur qui sont naturels, réutilisables et durables! Nos produits phares sont des chauffe-mains et des réchauffeurs de pied en fourrure de castor rasée. Il fait bon d'apporter des produits de fourrure inspirés de mon héritage et de ma culture autochtone au publique. La personne moyenne est tout simplement incapable d'accéder à la fourrure pour se réchauffer de cette façon sans notre entreprise. Nos produits sont incroyablement efficaces. Ils permettent à nos clients de rester à l’aise à l’extérieur sans être découragé par le froid de nos hivers Canadiens. Fête de lancement à Montréal pour L'Enfant de Gaïa

Le 13 juin, un jeudi soir, nous avons eu la fête de lancement pour « Les Forces de la Nature : L’Enfant de Gaïa » à Montréal. C’était une belle soirée tranquille avec des beaux gens, des activités amusantes et de la bonne nourriture. J’en suis reconnaissant.

C’était vraiment important pour moi de fêter le lancement de mon propre livre à Montréal, malgré le fait que je ne suis pas Montréalais et je n’y ai habité que deux ans. Même si c’était court duré, Montréal m’a beaucoup donné.

Quand je suis arrivé à Montréal en août 2016 pour ma maîtrise, je n’ai connu personne et j’étais complètement seul. Montréal est une grande ville très peuplée avec une culture forte et unique, et je ne me suis pas vite intégré. Même si Calgary fait partie des plus grandes villes au Canada, elle garde l’atmosphère d’une petite ville grâce à sa manière de faire l’urbanisme, et c’était ça ma norme. Montréal m’a bouleversé. Les gens, la culture, l’architecture, l’art, la langue… j’étais vraiment hors de mon élément.

Or, je me suis habitué. J’ai commencé par la gastronomie. En explorant les restaurants dans mon coin. Je suis assisté à tous les événements de la semaine d’accueil à l’Université de Montréal et j’ai commencé à faire des ami(e)s. Montréal m’a forcé de grandir, de découvrir une nouvelle facette de moi-même. J’ai suivi toutes mes études en français et mes interactions sociales étaient principalement en français, donc je suis devenu plus à l’aise dans la langue de Molière, version québécoise. J’ai appris de l’importance de l’art (et l’art local spécifiquement) chez une communauté et le pouvoir qu’un œuvre peut détenir. Grâce à la popularité de Montréal comme ville, j’ai vu des vieux et vielles ami(e)s, je suis assisté aux conférences qui n’arriveraient jamais à Calgary et je me suis plongé dans une nouvelle façon d’être. Même si mon séjour à Montréal était court, la ville m’a beaucoup changé et je ne serais pas qui je suis aujourd’hui sans Montréal. De plus, « L’Enfant de Gaïa » n’existerait pas!

L’idée d’écrire un livre pour connecter les gens avec la nature m’a venu tard, un soir, à Montréal, dans un parc municipal. J’ai partagé l’idée et j’ai reçu de financement de MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) après un sommet qui s’est déroulé à Montréal. En effet, j’étais au sommet « Génération plein air » pour deux raisons. D’abord, chercher de l’argent, mais deuxièmement, voir ce dont les gens pensent de mon idée. Est-ce que c’était bon? J’avais besoin de la validation externe; et je l’ai reçue! Mes co-participant(e)s ont trouvé l’idée malade! Ils m’ont donné la confiance de poursuivre cette idée jusqu’au fond.

C’est exactement ça que j’ai fait.

« Les Forces de la Nature » a commencé à Montréal, inspiré par Montréal, et financé par Montréal. Quand le livre était prêt, j’avais besoin de faire une petite ode à Montréal. Le lieu choisi était sur le nouveau campus de l’Université de Montréal (MIL). Une structure en bois, le Mont Réel a été financé par trois gouvernements (Allemagne, France et Québec), construit par trois universités (Université de Montréal, Université McGill et Université Concordia) et à la frontière de trois quartiers distincts de Montréal. C’était un lieu de rassemblement et avec une telle histoire, l’endroit idéal pour cette fête.

En collaborant avec des ami(e)s qui adorent la ville, nous avons planifié une belle soirée amusante et éclatante. Anthony Amsel a organisé un atelier de survie, gérée par Laura Newman à la fin, et nous a trouvé une service-traiteur qui n’utilise que les produits québécois et est éthique dans leur manière d’opérer, Chez Robin. Coureurs Montréal, un beau binôme, ont organisé un petit tour-jogging et beaucoup aidé avec le setup de l’événement. MEC était là avec un atelier mécanicien-vélo et les jeux outside-inside! Je suis tellement reconnaissant pour leur aide car c’est vraiment grâce à eux que l’événement était agréable et ludique.

Ce fut un grand plaisir de travailler sur ce projet passionnant. Nous aimerions souligner à quel point nous sommes reconnaissants envers les compagnies, les organismes et les agences gouvernementales qui ont choisi de nous soutenir au niveau financier, au niveau formatif ou au niveau de la diffusion. Ceci est le fruit de plus d’un an de travail et nous ne pouvons pas être plus être satisfaits et contents. Voici un livre bilingue qui contient nos coeurs et nos espoirs.

A Look Back at Gaia’s Child - The Edmonton Launch

On May 20th, eight weeks ago, I was back in my city for the official launch event of Gaia’s Child. After a whirlwind trip home from Toronto, and a week long road trip to southern Saskatchewan, I honestly couldn’t believe the day had finally come. It had been months since I had been home, and I remember feeling so happy to be back in my city, surrounded by my family, friends and loved ones, introducing this project to the world - officially.

Gaia’s Child has taken me on quite the journey. From Yellowknife when Chúk and I first met, to late nights editing in Edmonton and days spent collaborating on the final design in Toronto, it had all finally come together. All of our work and time had merged and melded into this beautiful book that I am so very proud of.

In Edmonton, mother nature welcomed us with a beautiful sunny spring day. Thanks to our event partner, Edmonton & Area Land Trust (EALT), we were able to get over 40 people out on the land at Larch Sanctuary, connecting with and enjoying nature in our own way. Our friends from F.R.E.E. Fitness hosted an intense outdoor workout overlooking Whitemud Creek. While some were getting their sweat on, others joined EALT building bee hotels, or exploring the sanctuary on a guided hike. Back at home base, MEC also joined us offering snacks and a nature scavenger hunt. Together, The Poison and The Apple team along with all of our great partners hosted an incredible outdoor event, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

In many ways, the Edmonton launch event reflects the entire Forces of Nature project - a group of young people coming together with passion and energy to create excitement and share their talents with the world. Gaia’s Child was created with an incredible team. Chúk and myself as lead author and editor; Andie Lafrentz, an incredibly talented Canadian artist; Sara Qarizada, the devoted and passionate graphic designer; Vickie Arsenault, our wonderful translator; and Zico He and Gabriel Tougas who produced our audiobooks in two languages. Seeing all of these individuals come together, and help us produce Gaia’s Child was one of my favourite parts of the entire process.

Ultimately, we created Gaia’s Child to encourage anyone who reads it to be creative in the way they explore their connection with nature, to the land on which they stand. The Edmonton launch event showed us all how we can do just that. From working out, to exploring on our own, there is no “right” way to get outside and enjoy nature. Seeing my friends, new and old, come together and enjoy the beautiful green spaces our city has to offer was worth all of the blood, sweat, tears, and anxiety that went into writing this book and planning this event.

With my whole heart, I would like to offer my deepest gratitude to all of my friends and family who supported Gaia’s Child along its way, to those who came out to the event to help us welcome it into the world, and everyone who helped us bring the book to life. Introducing Project Snorkel • Présentation du Projet Snorkel

We are delighted to present you with our newest initiative: Project Snorkel. Project Snorkel is an initiative led by Taylor Penzes and Curtis Onaczyszyn and will include cleanups hosted in six different locations over the span of three months this summer. The selection of locations for the cleanups was based on the popularity of the watershed for outdoor recreational activity. Locations include Woodstock, ON, Tilsonburg, ON, Port Burwell, ON, Turkey Point, ON, Brantford, ON, Grand Bend, ON, and Goderich, ON.

Project Snorkel is a grassroots operation with the intention of reinforcing the relationships of the local people with their waterways. The project emphasizes stewardship and outdoor recreation while ensuring an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. The project aims to foster a comfortable atmosphere to encourage members of the community to learn about and care for their waterways, therefore cultivating a deep-rooted relationship with the waterway.

Considering the amount of waste found on waterbeds is generally unknown to those using the waterways, Project Snorkel aims to educate individuals on the impact of the debris while fostering a relationship between individuals and the water. This relationship aims to encourage a sense of obligation to protect and maintain the waterways for future generations to enjoy. As a result of the inclusive nature of the project, the mission of the project is not limited to fostering relationships between individuals and their waterways, but is instead devoted to building relationships between entire communities and their local waterways. This will be accomplished through community cleanups and an active media presence, in turn enlightening the community on stewardship and environmental consciousness.

In short, Project Snorkel will:

Engage and increase outdoor activity in local communities through community shoreline cleanups.

Identify aquatic species that may be invasive or new to the waterway

Educate the community on the harmful effects of waste in our waterways.

Deepen the communities sense of value towards the waterways.

Provide a place of safety to those who are interested in meeting others who are concerned about environmental awareness.

Provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all people.

Provide valuable education about conservation and environmental stewardship through an engaging social media presence.

As an environmental project, the waste we collect will be properly sorted into recycling, garbage, hazardous waste and scrap metal. The team will then properly disposed of in the correct facilities.

Engager et accroître l'activité de plein air dans les communautés locales en nettoyant les rives des communautés.

Identifier les espèces aquatiques qui peuvent être envahissantes ou nouvelles dans la voie navigable.

Sensibiliser la communauté aux effets néfastes des déchets dans nos cours d'eau.

Approfondir le sentiment de valeur de la collectivité à l'égard des voies navigables.

Offrir un lieu sûr à ceux qui sont intéressés à rencontrer d'autres personnes préoccupées par la sensibilisation à l'environnement.

Offrir un environnement inclusif et accueillant pour tous.

Offrir une éducation précieuse sur la conservation et la gérance de l'environnement par le biais d'une présence engageante dans les médias sociaux.

Comme projet environnemental, les déchets que nous collectons seront correctement triés en recyclage, ordures, déchets dangereux et ferraille. L'équipe s'en débarrassera dans les installations appropriées.

Introduction à Laura Newman

Tout comme Anthony Amsel, le sujet de la précédente, je suis amateur de plein air et née à Montreal. Par contre, j’ai fait mes études en Communications à l’Université Concordia. Par la suite, j’ai travaillé pour quelques années dans la production des émissions de télé éducatives pour les enfants. Pour moi, le plein air a toujours été quelque chose que je faisais dans mon temps libre ou avec ma famille. C’était une espace où je me sentais calme et sur de moi. Je crois fortement dans le puissance de la nature pour améliorer la santé mentale, et que c’est avec une connection avec la nature que nous pourrons eventuellement changer le monde pas à pas.

Après avoir participer dans la programme Canadian Conservation Corps de la Federation Canadienne de la Faune, j’ai renouveler mon interêt au plein air et la conservation. Dans le cours du programme, j’ai passé 12 jours en Kayak dans la Baie de Fundy, et 5 mois en travaillant avec Le Réseau canadien des tortues marines, une organization qui fait de la recherche et la conservations sur les tortues luth – la tortue marine le plus grand du monde.

En ce moment, j'assiste aux excursions de camping du programme d'éducation en plein air du cégep du Collège John Abott.

En plus, je suis passionée de la musique. Je joue la guitare et le guitalele – parfois aux sommet de montagnes, et surtout autour du feu de camp!

Introduction à Anthony Amsel

Cette semaine, nous avons le plaisir d’accueillir Anthony Amsel, un Montréalais qui trouve sa passion dans la nature. Il est un de nos collaborateurs pour la fête de lancement de « Les Forces de la Nature : L’Enfant de Gaïa » à Montréal le 13 juin 2019 où il va donner un atelier de survie!

Bonjour chères/chers internautes!

Je me présente, Anthony Amsel, et j’ai le plaisir de collaborer avec la fabuleuse équipe de La Poison et La Pomme pour leur nouveau projet, Les Forces de la Nature.

Qui suis-je? Écologiste. Ingénieur. Amateur de plein air. Globe-trotter.

Je suis né dans la fabuleuse ville de Montréal, mais mon cœur bat fort là où les arbres règnent et la rivière chante, où les montagnes éclipsent les gratte-ciels et la mer gère le rythme de la vie. Bref, je respire la nature!

Mon parcours, agréablement atypique, m’a amené à découvrir pleins d’industries telles que la politique environnementale, la réhabilitation environnementale, la biodiversité urbaine et, plus récemment, la conservation en milieu humide.

Et aujourd’hui? Consommateur de connaissances, je me gâte avec un autre baccalauréat… en génie environnementale!

Quand les études sont plus calmes, je plonge dans mes autres passions : le plein air, la gastronomie, le voyage, l’escalade.

Des projets? Bien sûr! Je travaille étroitement avec le Corps Canadien de Conservation pour le développement de nouveaux programmes et avec Outward Bound Canada pour la création de nouveaux parcours d’expédition.

Sinon, cet été vous pouvez me trouver en wetsuit dans les marais de l’Ontario avec le START Turtle Project. Je participe de nouveau à leur programme de conservation de tortues.

Pourquoi le plein air, la nature? L’anxiété.

Eh, oui! Depuis que je suis tout jeune, je souffre d’anxiété et la nature a toujours été mon refuge; l’endroit où je me sens serein, fort.

Le vent à travers les feuilles. L’odeur de la terre après une tempête. La vague qui s’écrase contre les roches. Le son de la meute qui s’approche. Tous des moments apaisants qui éveillent les sens primitifs. La nature me centre, me guide, m’accueille.

Elle me rappelle aussi que nous sommes tous connectés : le grain de sable du Sahara transporté par le vent qui nourrit la jungle de l’Amazonie, la glace de l’Antarctique qui fond et se transforme en goutte d’eau qui tombe sur Montréal.

Alors pourquoi la nature? Pour la protéger. Pour la respecter. Pour offrir aux prochaines générations ce refuge inestimable qui se dégrade en un clin d’œil.

De l’optimisme? Toujours! Par exemple, les tortues serpentines aux Canada sont maintenant protégées et leurs populations reviennent, tranquillement, en force. Voyez comment celle-ci est contente!

The Edmonton and Area Land Trust (EALT)

This week on the blog we have the absolute pleasure of introducing you to an admirable woman who has committed her life to protecting wildlife habitats in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. Her name is Meghan Jacklin and in her position as Conservation Coordinator at the Edmonton and Area Land Trust (EALT), she spends her days actively protecting nature for both wildlife and people alike.

Meghan’s dedication and sense of responsibility to protect nature stems from her early exposure to nature, fostered through family canoeing and camping trips, as well as an early affinity for wolves. She acquired a degree from the University of Alberta in Conservation Biology, and upon graduation, she spent several years as a biologist studying birds. Now, however, she is working with EALT to protect all wildlife in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

The Edmonton and Area Land Trust is a unique organization for it is a conservation charity with the purpose of protecting nature for both wildlife and people, forever. The concept of a Land Trust is central to the effectiveness of the organization and is essential in ensuring that nature may permanently thrive. A land trust is an organization that protects land either through direct ownership or by partnering with landowners, with the goal of permanently protecting that land. EALT operates by either owning the land themselves, or by issuing conservation easements to land titles retained by their original owners. Conservation easements are crucial as they restrict development from occurring on the land even if it is sold to a new owner. Often, conservation easements are sought by landowners who are concerned with the wellbeing of natural areas after the owners themselves are gone -— conservation easements work to ensure that protection of the land will continue after the landowner is no longer personally there to ensure the conservation. To facilitate protecting the land, landowners may partner with EALT to ensure the permanent conservation of that land and the dependent wildlife. 

However, land donation and conservation easement are only part of EALT’s responsibilities. As a result of the constant changes to the manner in which land is used in Edmonton and the surrounding areas, as well as human impact as a whole, EALT actively manages this natural land to maximize the wellbeing of the wildlife. For example, across all of the designated land trusts, EALT consistently removes invasive weeds and fences, while also installing artificial habitats for birds and bats, which act as substitutes for their natural habitats to ensure they are able to continuously thrive. Additionally, EALT is involved with various projects in specific areas, including planting trees in areas which were previously subject to invasive and destructive human action.

The work of EALT is crucial because as the population of Edmonton and surrounding areas continues to grow at an alarmingly dramatic rate, wildlife and their natural habitats are increasingly threatened. EALT actively works to protect the wildlife that, figuratively and literally, live in the backyards of the people of Edmonton and surrounding areas. These natural habitats have been protected by the restriction on development and activities in these areas, limiting access only to the public who wish to walk the land, birdwatch, or take photographs. There are numerous ways in which individuals may get involved with EALT’s various initiatives. With an ever-growing amount of land to protect, EALT is in constant need of assistance from volunteers. Access to information on volunteering with EALT may be found here. Moreover, as EALT does not receive any government funding, and relies wholly on grants, donations, and endowment funds, donations are always welcomed and greatly appreciated -— every little bit helps to preserve the natural habitats in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. Coureurs Montréal aime la nature

Cette semaine, nous aimerions vous présenter à une de nos collaboratrices pour la fête de lancement! Le 13 juin 2019, Coureurs Montréal fera partie du lancement de « Les Forces de la Nature : L’Enfant de Gaïa » à Montréal où elles vont amener les participantes et les participants sur une petite course à pied pour découvrir un peu de Montréal.

Coureurs Montréal offre des visites de Montréal à la course à pied, aussi communément appelées "running tours" en anglais. Alors, - presque - en français, on a décidé d'appeler ça des "visites joggées". "Quel rapport avec l'environnement, la conservation, la nature et La Poison et la Pomme ?" que vous vous demandez, n'est-ce pas ? Et bien on est là pour vous expliquer tout ça, parce que oui, il y a plusieurs raisons à ce rapprochement.

D'abord, c'est une rencontre. Une rencontre entre l'auteur, Chúk, pas grand sportif mais très touchant avec sa façon singulière d'apprécier d'être dehors, et Fanny, coureuse et...

Engagée. Fanny est très sensible à tout ce qui a trait à l'environnement. Engagée, dans la fameuse démarche "zéro-déchet", une pratique qui vise à réduire au maximum ses déchets.

Alors, l'association pour organiser un beau lancement du livre de Chúk a parue évidente.

Coureurs Montréal amène des visiteurs de la ville de Montréal, dehors. En ville, mais dehors. Parcourir Montréal de la manière la plus écologique et sécuritaire en quelques sortes. Aussi, courir se fait partout ! Et, quelle chance ! Nous avons à Montréal, une montagne, et des berges de fleuve,.. La nature en ville.

Courir est une approche du "jouer dehors" différente de celle de Chúk et de ses supers héros, mais parce qu'il n'y a pas de mauvaise approche tant qu'il y a du respect, alors bienvenue à votre propre approche ! Pourquoi pas celle de lire La Poison et la Pomme, dehors ?
