“That was two years ago. I ain’t redoing that, nope sir.” He remembers very well the other Aquas drawing dicks and vaginas on his cast while he slept. Fun times. Not.
“’course I got more brain cells. That’s why I’m the engineer and not him.”
“Surprised you got any engineers out of that lot, with the shit I’ve heard they get in. Sure you’re not slowly losing some brain cells from just being there?” Oh, how Baxter smirked at that. The Aqua grunts from what he had heard were a.....unusual bunch.
“Still, if ya do it once, it can happen again.”
[x]
“Worried you’re gonna get a face full of pavement and your arm broken in a dozen pieces? Yeah. Maybe.” This papa bear proceeds to flick a few cigarette ashes at the grunt.
“Glad to know you got a couple more brain cells than your idiot boss.”
When Baxter wakes up Sunday morning, he is greeted by the smell of fresh pancakes and freshly brewed coffee. On the kitchen table is a rather uneven and sloppy-looking stack of flapjacks, and the coffee pot next to his usual mug, which itself is beside a small card that reads 'Happy Father's Day'. The word 'Father' is crossed out in red marker and underneath it reads 'Chief'.
When Baxter woke up that morning, he was expecting anything but this. Small furry cannonballs straight to his stomach by Dala, a sore back from sleeping in a funny position, or even the sound of yells from the couple fighting across the hall. But breakfast from the kid? And coffee too?
The detective shuffled out of bed quicker than normal, lured by the smells of breakfast and a strong cup of coffee. It was easy to tell just how out of sorts Baxter was, coming to sit down at the kitchen table. Pushing up the sleeves of his bathrobe, he was ready to dig in, when he saw the card.
........wait, what day was it? It wasn’t his birthday, that was for sure. Mother’s day had already passed (a three hour conversation with his mum), so that meant....hmm.
For a private investigator, he was shit with dates.
“Skiddo, what’s this for?” Baxter plucked the card from the table, brows furrowing as he worked to open it. He was strangely gentle, so utterly unused to this sort of behavior from the young girl.
He opened the card. And read.
And the lines of his face just softened.
Baxter’s relationship with his father was....strained. After his brother’s death, he was never the same, and any interaction between the two was sure to end up in a fistfight and a broken nose.
He never thought he would have kids either; his job was too dangerous, and anybody who entrusted him with a child was either stupid, or crazy. And yet, somehow, he ended up with a scrap of a kid who decided to make him breakfast on Father’s Day.
The detective smiles.
Maybe being a dad wasn’t so bad after all.

“ U-um… yes? “ Nicki sheepishly crawled up from the far corner she had been wedged into, adjusting her hat to slightly cover her face. “ If it makes you feel better, even Ritz thought this was a bad idea. “
Ritz gave a nod and squeaked in the affirmative, tugging at his Trainer’s shirt collar as if to further prove his point.
“ You told me the case was gonna be dangerous. You told me ‘it’s dangerous, kid, you’ll get hurt’. But they’re always dangerous and you always tell me I’ll get hurt. I know you’re lookin’ out for me, but…I can be useful! Really! So…please? Just this one time? I’ll do whatever ya ask, Chief! Promise! “ Her hand traced a small criss-cross over her shirt as she said so.
“ Cross my heart and everythin’! “
“Well, maybe you should start listening to your rat more often. If I told ya once, I told ya a thousand times, kid!” The leather seats of his car creaked as he turned around, practically glaring at the kid in the backseat.
“It’s because they are dangerous! Smugglers, goons with guns, it ain’t a place for a kid like you! Hell, it ain’t a place for me either, but it pays the rent. There’s no way in hell I’m gonna even think about dragging you to the hospital ‘cause of a bullet wound.” Baxter whipped back in his seat, grabbing the steering wheel at tightly as he could.
“.......fuck, I don’t have time to take you back to the flat. Shit.”
Don’t. Move. Not a muscle. Not a sound.
— The car jolting around from side to side made is extremely hard for the young Trainer to keep quiet, and a couple of times, she had to push her hand against her mouth to contain a muffled ‘eep!’ of a cry.
Okay, so maybe she shouldn’t have stowed away in the backseat of the Chief’s car after being given explicit instructions to stay behind. And maybe she should have listened when he told her it was more than likely going to be a dangerous mission. And maybe, just maybe, she should have listened to the little squeaks from Ritz that seemed to say ‘Stay home’.
But it was too late for ‘should haves’ now, wasn’t it?
As the car took a rather sharp turn, Nicki and Ritz found themselves flung to the side with a loud thumping noise. After all, sitting behind the front seats of the car meant no seat belts.
There were two things Baxter knew like the back of his hand. One was the layout of the local bar, which he could maneuver about piss drunk without disturbing a single stool. The other, was ‘Ole Bessie. He had been fixing up that car for decades now; he knew every creak, every groan, and the exact point where he had 20 seconds to pull over before the brakes failed on him.
Loud thumping noises in the backseat? Now, that was something new.
It didn’t take long for the detective to find a side street to pull over in, pulling the key out of the ignition. He sat there, knuckles digging into the steering wheel as he sat and pondered. Baxter should be feeling furious at the moment; he had explicitly told the girl that she needed to stay at home. This case wasn’t going to be pleasant, and the last thing he needed was a damn kid at his side.
He took a couple deep breaths, to quell any flames of anger that might get thrown at the young girl. Baxter couldn’t fault her. She was full of wild energy, and impulsiveness, and damn if he didn’t admire that.
There was a loud creak of leather upon leather as Baxter turned in his seat, taking a good look at whatever had made the large thump.
“Didn’t I tell you not to come? Around...20 times, maybe?”
Just simply, utterly unbearable.
Happy Valentine’s Day to @pyroclassist, the best bae I could ever ask for.
but maple donuts are Nasty they taste like trees
Baxter is going to pretend he didn’t hear these heathen words as he proceeds to cram two donuts right into his mouth.

a look of shock was feigned, eyes going wide as if genuinely frightened by the concept of baxter going after him.
and just as quickly, it melted away, laughter, light and airy, gently rocking his shoulders. ❝ i’m shaking in my boots! truly, you are a most terrifying specimen! ❞ another peal of laughter, louder this time, hitting the air hard. there was an absence of genuine humor to it, the gleam to his eyes and the way his lips curled all too kindred to how cairo let his teeth flash. the luxray raised his hackles, his chest rumbling like distant thunder.
❝ i’m waiting, big bad detective. come on, how far will you go for her? ❞ with a snap of his fingers, cairo’s glowing gaze was fixed on dala, a deep hunger lingering in them as his jaws part W I D E.
Baxter’s eyes darted from the chuckling idiot in front of him, to the small Teddiursa desperately trying to back away from Luxray. Dala was never of the fighting sort; she lived her life in peace and comfort, and the thought of defending herself was out of the question.
The tendons on the detective’s neck tightened as he grit his teeth, not amused at all with the man’s playful attitude.
“How far will I go? A lot farther than you probably think, asshole.” Hogan could certainly come to Dala’s aid and hold off the fierce Luxray, but Mandus? Oh, he was all Baxter’s. The detective was not a fast man, but he was sturdy, and his long legs covered much more of a distance than thought.
It had been a long time since he boxed in college, a very long time. But with a good enough target like Mandus’ face? He was certain he wouldn’t miss.
❝ looks like one of your C U B S wandered too far from the nest, @unbearablelaw. is this a treat for cairo you are sending me ? ❞ may that cub’s death be swift and merciful, as merciful as it could be to allowed its young life to be devoured by the ravenous luxray. even now, he was licking drooping strings of saliva off of his maw in anticipation.
“DALA!”
The detective’s voice boomed out, color rising up his neck and to his ears. Very little could effectively piss Baxter off to that point, but seeing the Pokemon he doted upon like a child, in danger, was enough to do the job. Behind him stood his lumbering Ursaring, primed for whatever command he was given.
“You. Tell that damned cat of yours to step. The fuck. Away. If that scrawny piece of shit even touches one hair on her head, you’re done. And I mean it.”
Doesn't that girl have parents though?
“Yeah, she does. Mentions them sometimes. Not the best at home though, can’t blame her.” Baxter frowns at that, not really sure if it was the best stance to take.
“Look, I can’t decide for her to stay or go. But if it takes her off the streets while she makes her decision, she can stay.”
So, why /do/ you care for that little kid? You dont exactly seem like 'fatherly' material, if you ask me!
“Ya think?”
Truthfully, Baxter was far from being fatherly material. He was a man who lived off of cigarettes, cheap beer, and whatever takeout place he could find the menu to the quickest.
He swore. He lied. He played his job on both sides, and gave little care to the outcome. Sure, he treated his bears like a father would, but they were no replacement for a human child. Not fatherly material by any stretch of the word. And yet, somehow, he found himself in that exact position.
“She’s grown on me. Like a parasite, you know what I mean? She needed a hot meal and a warm place to spend the night. You just, you don’t see someone like that and refuse to help them.”
Smoke billows out from between his lips, before he takes another drag on his cigarette.
“She grows on you.”
