1500 years before modern times, the place now known as the Ruins of Alph was built in Johto, and the earliest known system for writing—the modern Latin alphabet—was developed. Although no one knows exactly who built the Ruins of Alph, research indicates that the people in question were an ancient civilization that wished to co-exist with the enigmatic Unown that bear great similarity to the alphabet letters. Not only did that tribe impart messages on the ruins’ walls describing the Unown, but they also erected a Pokémon statue for an unknown reason.

At some point later, outsiders began to gather near the ruins. As the Unown were timid creatures, they rejected contact with anyone but the clan that protected them. To ensure the Unown’s well being, the Ruins of Alph’s inhabitants decided to leave the region, but not without devising complicated puzzles so that one day the Unown could be summoned again.

Beta tilted their head. The other didn’t show signs of impurity. But Beta never jumps to conclusions.

“You are a Pokemon correct? Who are you?”

     Smile? That was not often used in his day to day. In fact, has he really ever smiled? No. He hasn’t. What use has he for it? None? None. Happy is not useful. Happy is positive only. He is not positive. He is a harsh force to be reckoned with. There is no room for happy. 

     He can try to imitate. He sees them smile. He should imitate Beta. Try to smile. Alpha has to smile. He will try.

     “Statement: Happy seems to be triumph. Victory. Purity. When achieved, there is happy. This is where happy is applicable to me. I see no other way to use it. Inquiry: Do I need happy? Statement: Happy seems to not be useful to me.”

     That and the smile on his face probably seems slightly sinister. Despite the fact that Alpha himself will attack only the impure. Perhaps he’s best to steer away from the smiling. He cannot smile properly. Theory possible correct; Alpha will never be able to imitate or ever feel happy.

β:”Triumph and victory. These can be a form of happy.” It is what the trainers felt wasn't it? When they fight with their pokemon? Yes. Triumph. Victory. Those feelings suited the Alpha. But was that his only happiness?

So many questions. Not good. Nope. Won’t do. They seeked answers.

Beta observed as Alpha tried to smile. But it looked all wrong. Wrong. Incorrect. Wrong. Wrong.

“Happy can be useful. Happy can be a good way to bond with others. To accomplish goals. But I don’t think the smile suits you. It appears impure. Not compatible with one like you.” Perhaps the Alpha could try something else? A laugh. A act of intimacy. Intimacy: a hug. a kiss.

Beta has become a natural at imitating ‘positive’ emotions. But they do not ‘feel’ these emotions most of the time. Beta has,however, learned that appearing to have those emotions can lead to better results when gathering data. Being nice, smiling, acting peaceful and non threatening. These are all tools Beta uses to gain the things they need. Manipulative? In a way. But Beta doesn't have any malicious intent with their actions.
