Not another lifeless body. It was a regular occurrence in Vegas, and Ria didn’t even flinch when she arrived on the scene and saw the carnage. Lifting the taped barrier, she watched as various other teams busied themselves with taking photographs of the aftermath of the crime.
Questions were already being raised about the security of the Mancini Syndicate after the release of Pauly’s will. As a cop, she shouldn’t worry, but as a member of the syndicate she was beyond worried. Still, she had a job to do, and that involved catching the culprits along with providing the Mancinis with all the intel that they needed.
Out of the corner of her eye, Ria noticed someone crossing under the tape. Turning to find that it wasn’t someone who was authorised to do so, she approached. “I’m sorry, you can’t go any further. This area is under investigation until further notice, so if you could just move back behind the tape, that’d be great.”
Sometimes Jackie’s estimation of her sneaking skills is a little off. She’d hoped that she’d be fine to sneak in under the cover of the darkness and chaos of the scene, just to grab a peak and try to get a visual understanding of what had gone down. But, of course, she was caught. She turned to the officer and put on a charming smile. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said. “I was hoping if I could get a look I might be able to write an article that’ll move me out of homemaking and housewife advice. The guys in the article don’t take me seriously because of... well...” She motioned down to her skirt and blouse and then tucked her hair behind her ears. “What exactly happened here?”

the glass nursed in hand was raised to his lips as he took the free seat opposite, the corners of his lips tugging upwards for a split moment before a sip was taken. how sweet, she always was, thinking about his safety and the way she knew that this was not only just a simple friendly chat. a little sad possibly, the fact she never seemed to consider the fact that he only did want to make sure she wasn’t too rattled after the night of pauly’s memorial, but she was right.
“ oh don’t worry over me, sophie. it’s not the worst scene i’ve come across. ” the truth, but it didn’t mean that he was anything but calm about the fallout of said scene. but she didn’t need to know that. “ and you definitley don’t need to thank me for the wine. ‘least i could do because you’re not wrong. there may just be something you can help me with, or at least i hope there’s something you can help me with. ”
“it doesn’t need to be the worst,” sophie replied with a shrug of her shoulders, her accent curling the ends of her words. “i’m more concerned about what anxieties you might have now in regards to the people that did this. it was rather... brazen, what they did.” she yawned and then took a sip from her wine, sinking back into the couch a little bit once more like she’d been upon his arrival. “je suis désolé.” i’m sorry. “i shouldn’t be wasting your time. what can i do for you, mister mancini?” collecting information wasn’t exactly her favorite thing, it put her in a line of fire she didn’t want to be in and oftentimes the men she was asked to sleep with to get said information were less than enjoyable. but a job was a job and she was very, very good at hers.
my last ooc post for now i promise. bUT i think i’m finished with everything i owe in my notifications from before i got sick. if we still haven’t plotted and you would like to feel free to give this a like and i’ll message you! i write:

Eyes studied features, the wistful glimmer in her eyes was hard to not take note of. She appeared sincere, but who really knew. A sob story alone wasn’t enough to allow his guard to be broken even the slightest bit. But he allowed an apologetic smile to spread across his lips as his head nodded gently. “ I know who you are, Ms. Rivera. ” There was a careful decision to use the more formal title rather than the name offered. Features may appear affable but the conversation could also be interpreted as anything but if one knew the real reason behind either of their intentions. “ Have you ever had any aspirations of writing something more— topical ? Expand out from the old home and what a good housewife should be expected to be? ”
Jackie’s face revealed an innocent curiosity in response to his question and she tilted her head to the side a fraction, a little smile still on her face. “Do you, now? A fan of my columns?” she asked. “That’s an interesting question. I guess I’ve never thought about it. It’s just a job to kill time and give me a little extra spending money every now and then. I write novels but I never really expect them to get published.” She felt his eyes pierce through her and she met his gaze with an oblivious one of her own. “I’m sorry. I don’t think you’ve introduced yourself. I suppose I can make an inference based on our conversation so far but it’s still polite.”

the syndicate had their ups and downs for as long as she could remember , having rivals was nothing new . but the actions of the irish seemed to everyone into a frenzy , tess found it hard to drown out the whispers of what happens next . vexation festered just below the surface of her skin , like a storm waiting to break . her head was carefully balanced and cupped in her palm as her other fingers toyed with the glass base of the martini glass . surely , the look of disdain that read on her features told a story of not wanting to be bothered . “ and here i was thinking i looked fresh as a daisy , ” she scoffs , bringing the clear liquid to her lips with a sardonic grin pulling on the corners of her painted lips .
jackie couldn’t help but smile at the expression that blossomed over the stranger’s face. most of the time she only achieved that result so quickly with people she knew. “not one for observational small talk, i see,” she said, raising her eyebrows to see if the other woman would get the joke. she didn’t expect her to particularly enjoy it. “getting a drink at a bar isn’t the greatest place to be left alone, you know. i really only drink out like this when i want to interact with other people.”

information. who the irish were. who may be involved with them. where any of them hidden within the walls of this very hotel. it was about the only useful thing that seemed to be on anyone’s mind after the show of strength at pauly’s memorial. to him, at least, it seemed as if they’d reared their ugly heads out of nowhere. but an act like that couldn’t be achieved by a small group.
there was more to the story. there had to be for two of their own to be dead and one that barely made it out alive.
it always left an unsavoury taste in his mouth, at least when sophia was concerned, asking for information. she was only here in the first place because his father had demanded repayment of her husband’s debts. but so far, the woman had managed to extract useful information from men at their weakest moment when prompted or simply on her own volition. who knew what might be lurking in memories deemed unimportant.
a glass was gently placed in front of her as a smile pulled across his lips, “ cara, how are you after the chaos that turned out to be pauly’s memorial? not too shaken i hope. ”
after spending a little time at the bar, sophie had found herself a quiet, out of the way spot to sit and watch. occasionally a regular would wander by, offer her a brief smile, and then keep moving with their wives or playthings on their arms. people were staying in their rooms that evening. but that meant a break for her.
she didn’t have many of those.
by the time luciano appeared before her with an offering of wine and that smile he always wore when he was about to ask her for a favor, she’d curled up against the back of the couch and leaned to the side so she could stare out the window into the night. it was quiet; she’d never seen las vegas so quiet.
but she was polite and a good employee and when he took a seat across from her she sat upright, smoothed out her skirt, and folded her hands neatly in her lap. “i’m alright,” she answered him. “i think you’re in the worse position between the two of us. i should be asking after you. are you well? i take it there’s something i can do to help since you sought me out.” she gave him a meaningful look, but her smile was still kind. he was respectful towards her and there had been several instances in the past where he’d stood up for her against clients who were getting too rough or refused to pay. she knew who was watching her back around here. “thank you for the wine, by the way.”
ruffiian:
There was a thick coating of blood smearing the outer layer of his clothes. The body of the kid that had been beaten until he was next to nothing, lay in front of him looking like a pulp of a human being. The boy coughed up mouth fulls of his own blood, struggling for small gasps of air. They had brought him down here to get some answers, but the boy drifted in and out of a delirium that no one could understand. The pathetic sight repulsed Javier and made his blood boil. These animals needed to be wiped out, quickly.
A disturbance cuts through the otherwise quiet room, drawing his attention towards the only way in or out of here. It’s none other than Jackie Rivera, a persistent thorn in his side. He stands to block the view of the bloodied body writhing on the metal table.
“ You shouldn’t be here. ” // @undcrstands
It wasn’t the first time Jackie had walked into a bad situation and it definitely wouldn’t be the last. At least, much to her relief, it was Javi who discovered her trying to get a clearer view of what was happening and not someone a little more unforgiving.
She sighs a little at the expression on his face and she straightens herself out from the crouch she’d been in. “I saw somebody dragging someone away and I wanted to see if I needed to call the police.” It was only a half lie. “Don’t worry, you know me. I keep my information close and my friends closer. Is he gonna be okay? That kid?”

the days only get longer and more brutal. jimmy’s got his work cut out for him thanks to the irish, he’s been running around all day chasing various leads only to come up with a big, shiny goose egg. the detective usually does his best to steer clear of the hotel bar - too stubborn and sardonic to live up to the alcoholic police officer shtick - but he’s decided a cold glass of something dark with a bite is exactly what the doctor ordered.
a cigarette pokes out from the corner of his mouth, hardly masks the pursed-lipped smirk he shoots her. “gee, thanks for that. do i smell, too?” before she can pipe up, he wags an authoritative index finger at her. “don’t answer that.”
he runs a heavy hand through his hair, over tired eyes, and takes a long drag. “you snooped anything out yet?” he can’t imagine jackie’s here for a quiet night. she’s looking for someone drunk and slack-jawed to coax info from, he just knows it. hopefully she’s got more than he does. “you show me your’s, i’ll show you mine.”
jackie smirked when jimmy realized the opening he’d given her, reaching out to lower his finger. “i can’t believe you just wagged your finger at me, sir.” she clicked her tongue at him and shook her head disapprovingly despite the grin that still lingered on her face.
her expression softens (although only minutely) when the moment passes and she hums thoughtfully. “how do i know you have something worth me knowing?” she asked, gently poking the toe of her shoe against his ankle. “y’know, normally i’d press you more but you really look like you’ve been to hell. i haven’t really spoken to anybody; everybody’s been a little on edge. but, lucky for both of us, i am the queen of eavesdropping.”
lucianomancini:
Whether or not it had been a genuine attempt at being friendly, it would have had to take a village to make him trust that there was no other motive behind the offer of being brought a drink. Better to be the one with the motive rather than be the one on the receiving end. But the slight tightness that came with the pleasant expression couldn’t be overlooked. He imagined a simple free drink wasn’t going to aid him all that much in getting to know the columnist.
A hand came up to wave away the comment, “ Oh, I don’t doubt that, the offer is greatly appreciated and noted. ” The smile upon his lips was turned down a notch or two as he twisted slightly upon the stool, his elbow coming to rest upon the bar top as eyes focused upon Jackie’s features. “ Husband sent overseas? ”
Jackie met his gaze head on, putting on the performance she gave everybody when talking about her dear, Vietnam-bound husband. “Yeah, Diego. Army National Guard. He was sent to Vietnam,” she explained, wistfulness coming to her eyes. The story of Diego was one she’d been telling for years. The lie and the character was so well ingrained in her mind she barely had to think about it when she spoke. “Writing a home and housewife column isn’t all that fulfilling when I don’t feel like I have a home to be a housewife for. But, a job is a job and the extra money and productive time is nice. Oh, have I introduced myself? I don’t think I have. I’m Jacqueline Rivera. Most people call me Jackie.”
wHOO i’m back ladies and gents you have me the rest of the day. can we talk about this plot drop?? i’m so excited to see what people are gonna do.
sorry i’ve been awol the past couple days. i got really, really sick but i’m hoping tomorrow i’ll have enough energy to get back to replies!

Once that sentence couldn’t have rung more true. If his father had been alive, there wouldn’t be time wasted upon settling the vendetta. But it was a simple fact that this had occurred because his father wasn’t here. No one would have dared be brave enough to make such a scene if Pauly Mancini had been alive, and now? It wasn’t so certain. A head tilted to the side before a single corner of his lip tugged upwards. “ The police have it all good in hand. Our main concern right now is with the grieving families these irish have affected with their gruesome act. ”
A shake of his head was quick to be given, “ Now what kind of man would I be if I let you buy me a drink in my own place? Keep your money. ” A sickening smile laced with charm spilled across his lips as he glanced away from her as he tapped the bar and raised two fingers up at the bartender. “ The usual, and whatever the signora had again. ”
“Of course,” Jackie agreed easily. “They’re all in my prayers.” That certainly wasn’t a lie; her heart ached for the families that would be dealing with this for years to come. But she felt the same for the families of future victims of the Italians as well. Naturally, she kept her mouth shut about that part. After all, the police have it all good in hand.
She finished off her drink just in time for the bartender to take Mancini’s cue to pour her another. She didn’t miss the venom in his smile, the wolf’s teeth sharp enough to take out anybody in his way. But she was used to men like him. He was nothing special; the perfect caricature of the Italian mobster. She kept her own expression pleasant, if a little tired. “I haven’t had a free drink since my husband was sent overseas,” she commented. “I was just trying to be friendly. I know that always helps me on rough days.”

* / grief manifests itself in curious ways, and she hadn’t realized that the loss of syndicate lives would require such attention from high rollers who needed full lips to distract from the woes at hand. stella’s meticulous as she saunters into the bar from an evening’s tryst, eager to fill her system with anything that can put her at ease. the question from a nearby patron earns a laugh, though it’s not necessarily a KIND one.
‘ you can say that, ’ she quips, a coquettish smile lofted at the bartender to ensure that she doesn’t have to drop a cent. ‘ but i’m not six feet under, if we’re going by who’s had WORSE days around here recently. ’
“that’s certainly one way of looking at things,” jackie commented, resting her forearm on the bar so she could lean into it a bit more comfortably. “i got out of work and it felt like the city was in a lockdown. it’s a little eerie. vegas isn’t supposed to be this quiet.”
she quickly took note of her conversation partner: expression, clothes, the drink placed before her. anything of importance later on. “i don’t think we’ve met before, have we? i’m jackie.”

“It isn’t healthy, being so full of hate. I know how it is, trust me, but it isn’t healthy - that kind of stress, it’ll take you out young. That’s how people end up having heart attacks at forty.” He didn’t know that for certain, of course, but it only made sense to him in his mind and seemed like the right thing to say. Not that it would change anything, he was sure, but he just wanted her to know that he did understand where she was coming from. He sipped his drink, nodding along as she spoke. After a moment, he set the glass down and spoke. “Yeah, I know - I know. Hatred runs deep around here and it’s just… Hard to shake it off and keep going.”
“It’s certainly made me very tired,” Sophia admitted, but she shot him a tiny smile. Nobody in their positions have had an easy go at things. “I try to be better. But even that wears me down. So I’m kind of stuck. But that’s not really new.” She set her glass down so the bartender could refill it, her shoulders slumping. “What do you think will happen now?”
