The second watch was a far better experience, my goodness. Set and setting makes a great difference. Arriving with intentionality, sobriety, and greater context all allowed for an ease of focus and investment in the story I lacked at the drive-in. It’s still not my favorite Nolan movie, but I am overly partial to Tenet and that’s more to do with my own preference. In every technical sense, this movie is a triumph. Between practical effects, experienced cast and crew, and technological advancements, you can’t argue this is one of the greatest achievements of his career, let alone the cinematic industry as a whole. Although he takes a few liberties with the story, the perspectives Nolan fixates on (of fate, responsibility, and humanity) are the heart of this retelling. The motivation of our decisions and the way that weight gets carried within is what defines us as both individuals and as a society.
The actions of our past cannot be changed. Humanity absolutely can be changed, both for better and for worse but intent makes all the difference. Avoidance of personal responsibility is going to lead one astray. Accountability and atonement are the only chance for redemption, but it is not a guaranteed path. One must be steadfast and truthful to see their way home. Each individual carries consequences for their actions, and every action carries consequences unknowable by the individual. No one leader is capable of saving us all because society is not built through selfishness.
If each of us granted hospitality and grace to those among us, we could all propel each other forward, hokey as that may sound. But I stand by the opinion there is no way for an original text of this global and fundamental magnitude to sound cliche. Whether you see or enjoy this film or not, Homer’s song will resonate louder because of it. That is, if we let it.
