let’s talk about the winter soldier.
let’s talk about posthumanism and body horror and the kind of thorough desensitisation that’s almost orwellian in its completeness. let’s talk about how the winter soldier has no concept of self or identity, how he clearly doesn’t think of himself as a person. let’s talk about him being desensitised not only to the violence he perpetuates, but also to the violence done to him. (the way he doesn’t react to pierce backhanding him, and just takes the brainwashing and the excruciating pain that comes with it. let’s talk about just how excruciating the pain must have been to make him scream like that.)
let’s talk about the winter soldier’s zero regard for his own wellbeing, and the way the mechanised methodical ruthlessness was used to underline his role as a tool. like. jesus christ, this isn’t just how pierce and his handlers and other people see him, this is how he sees himself. zero concept of agency or personhood.
let’s talk about the sheer brutal physicality of his fights with steve. let’s talk about how the force necessary to kick steve back is enough that the winter soldier literally falls down too, and just goes with it and doesn’t stop firing. let’s talk about the way he and steve are evenly matched, to the point that their showdown was this close to ending in mutually assured destruction.
let’s talk about steve rogers being the first and only person in the winter soldier’s memory who shows emotion towards him, and how much that fucks the winter soldier up; he doesn’t care about himself or see himself as a human being, and here’s this man he’s never seen before in his life treating him like they’re both people and not a weapon and a target. (MISSION. jesus christ on a pony i can’t even.) let’s talk about the winter soldier’s childlike confusion when for the first time in his memory he wants to remember or know something/someone except he doesn’t know how. he literally doesn’t have the tools to build an emotional connection, and he wants to, and fuck him if he’s not gonna try.
let’s talk about how he bloody well imprints on steve after a two-minute encounter that is mostly violent knifeporn; how his programming, fresh and new and shiny and terrifying, starts to fall apart again as soon as he confronts steve again.
let’s talk about steve rogers perfectly fucking willing to stay on a burning, crashing helicarrier to save the person who is no longer bucky barnes; who, if he can’t save bucky, is perfectly fucking willing to go down with him. because he’s with bucky ‘till the end of the line, and if he can’t be, then what does anything matter.
What if Bucky just keeps gaining weight after Romania through his recovery, living peacefully with his boyfriend in Brooklyn? Steadily eating his way to remembering, Bucky discovers more than just flavors, stumbling into modern genres of porn and being both amused and turned on at "stuckage porn" (help me step-bro, I'm stuck in the washing machine, type shit). He decides, though, a bottom-heavy gainer, that he can do better than that, planting himself in their closet-like pantry and calling Steve to get him to "help." The problem is... Bucky doesn't realize his hips are wide enough that he's stuck 😳
Manhattan Gothic
The rats grow bigger every year and have since the factories were built up toward the smoggy sky. If you feed them, even only once, they and their children will bring you gifts from the murky subway tunnels until you grow old. Your mother once dropped half a bagel into the gutter and every time an offering of thanks turns up on your porch she cries for days.
You visit the farmers market in Union Square. The trestle tables are all dressed with black cloth and you don’t dare to meet the eyes of the people behind them. The signs advertise organic lavender and freshly mulled cider but the things that lie squirming and blinking on beds of packed ice are surely not natural. A man calls for you to try some artisan wine, and you force a smile and decline. The air smells like windfall peaches and unwashed stone. A man calls for you to try some artisan wine. Your blood runs cold as you turn away from a pair of little girls with alarmingly red juice running down their chins. Artisan wine.
You have never been to Eataly. You aren’t completely sure what resides within the sleek glass exterior of Eataly, but the people you see on the subway clutching little paper bags bearing its insignia are all pallid and glassy-eyed. They never speak, but the faint fragrance of tagliatelle follows them when they leave. They are not threatening, but once you found a chocolate truffle, round and luscious, in your coat pocket when one of them sat too closely. The taste of salted caramel hasn’t left your mouth for months.
You wait for the F train. You left yourself an extra hour for your commute, but somehow it doesn’t feel like enough. The uptown F always runs faster than the downtown F. The downtown F always runs faster than the uptown F. You fall in love with others on the platform, and you fall out of love. The sound of warm summer rain and the smell of halal carts and the timbre in your lover’s voice all fade into the garlands of trash that decorate the tracks. Was there a delay? How can infinity be delayed? Who can hold the void between stations?
bad days
The first couple of captain america movies were good. I know. I know. I hate the mcu too but the first couple of captain america movies were good I'm Sorry. I have to speak my truth
The mcu wasn't ALWAYS completely soulless. Like it was never high art or anything it's always been kinda silly action movies but the first couple of em were good. I'm not gonna let the first avenger + winter soldier get memory hole'd Never forget what we once had. Me & like three other people are left standing in the stucky trenches in 2023. I am cringe but I am right. Remember what we believed in
I'll happily go farther than that: Winter Soldier is a great movie. The dialogue is good, the pacing is good, each supporting actor gets a solid arc which means for once Natasha and Fury are written well and Anthony Mackie gets to show off his range, the fight choreography is snappy and well thought-out, and the Bucky reveal is timed and acted impeccably.
Also, not to soapbox about this again like it's 2014 lol, but while I'm on the fence about how intentional it was, they really did go ahead and say "the core of US military imperialism is white supremacy and it's irredeemable, the only thing to do with it is expose it and burn it down" and they said it cogently and impactfully.
Wasn't aware that people were saying that these movies were bad? But this is a hill I'm perfectly willing to die on even 9 years later. Of course taste is subjective but I'm with OP, I'm speaking my truth and Winter Soldier was awesome.

Warnings: None Rating: Explicit Word count: 89,678 Relationship: Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes Tags: Shrunkyclunks, Canon Divergence, Romance, Angst and humor, Hurt/comfort, Bucky Barnes Recovering, Protective Steve Rogers, Avengers family, Gaslighting, Emotional/Psychological abuse, Body dysphoria, Anxiety, Agoraphobia, illustrated, art, a premise taken to its logical conclusion, whatever happened to predictability?
Summary:
For better or for worse (usually worse), Steve Rogers has been the most famous guy in the room for a while. And though newsreels have given way to YouTube, people’s reactions haven’t changed much in seventy-some years. Steve’s become an expert at keeping his head down and getting on with his life.
A head-on collision on a busy street sends books flying and sweeps Steve off his feet. The point of impact has a name: James. A charming mess of long hair, thick glasses, and a crooked, not-quite-smile. If he recognizes Steve, he chooses not to comment, placing him firmly in Steve’s good graces.
As far as Steve can tell, they might be Bogie and Bacall all over again, save for the group of idiots with selfie sticks who surround them. But for once, the request isn’t for Steve.
Which begs the question: if James is James, then who the hell is Bucky?

Welcome to the first of my very late @fandomtrumpshate stories! It’s a werewolf AU that is mostly about feelings. It’s got family (blood and otherwise), action, angst, and tons of hurt/comfort. Thank you to @starmaki for being the most patient and supportive high bidder a gal could ever ask for. Shout outs to @winterofthedarkestlight, @fasach, and @floggingink for the help with editing.

And fill our bodies up like water till we know (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes) 22,705 words
Wolves mate for life. It’s both the best thing about Bucky’s life, and the most inconvenient.
After six days in Steve’s arms, Bucky dreams again, for the first time since the ice — wolf dreams, four feet on the ground, the smell of the earth, and his eyes in the sky.
The moon is coming, and this reprieve — like all reprieves — is temporary.

intial captain america is just like what if you were POOR and CHRONICALLY ILL and you had a BEST FRIEND and you were also In LOVE with eachother, and then he went to war and then you FOLLOWED him and then he was captured but you rescued him but then he DIED in FRONT OF YOU and then YOU died for 70 years and then you CAME BACK and had to fight ALIENS and then your BOYFRIEND turned out to be a DEADLY ASSASSAIN who was BEING TORTURED for those 70 years but then he BROKE the conditioning because he REMEMBERED you and then you HAD TO FIGHT and then you almost DIED but then he sAVED you and then
i do not generally subscribe to judgement of fandom consumption but having fallen into the deep well of captain America - winter soldier, bucky barnes steve rogers fic I've discovered an ick the likes of which i have never encountered before. this ick being work that imagines bucky Barnes's arm regrowing or healing, allowing him to shed his metal prosthesis. with the blanket statement of- everyone is allowed to enjoy whatever they want and i am by no means policing that- that shit is fucking weird and ableist and, i think, really misses the point.
i've been in this fandom , or at least lurking around the periphery, for at least a decade now, and one of the things that keeps me coming back, and which i think keeps a lot of us coming back to superhero narratives, is the way that non-normative bodies perform and are punished.
imagining a happy ending (and this is coming after a fic i did read 100k words into… a winter soldier recovery narrative…) where bucky barnes is no longer an amputee, no longer challenging conceptions of ability and normativity and redemption, just feels like abandoning so much of what makes this story worth returning to. his prosthetic arm- the fact that it is a weapon installed into his body, the fact that it is part of his body made whole again after trauma, the fact that it both allows him independence and also marks his decades of dehumanization- that's what is compelling. not some happy ending where becoming able- and normative-bodied is somehow held up as healing.
