That post is now older than I was when I made it.
It’s funny that that post feels older to me than it actually is.
But I distinctively remember the reason I made the post was in the wake of a really rough night in my corner of Tumblr with my friends. Hindsight? Just a lot of peak puberty emotions going on, and then it got picked up by the homepage and then it was cringe af immediately lmao we knew it then.
Anyway, in the spirit of reflection again, here’s some highlights in the last…..16 years (oh god).
Months after the post: Kanye overtakes Taylor Swift’s VMA speech to create the worst branch of the timeline we all live in now.
1 year later: I’m in my first serious relationship, that’s also abusive. Oops.
2 years: I start having panic attacks, but don’t know what they are and basically decide to kill myself after graduation if I don’t figure out what’s happening.
3 years: I have a mental breakdown I can’t recover from and finally got into therapy and medication (and away from the abusive ex.)
4 years: I finished my first year of college, spend the summer in Hawaii with my first roommate and start my first retail job.
5 years: Another mental breakdown (why does junior year suck so much???)
10 years: I graduated college, in year 3 of an awful job, but quit it and go remote; not before buying a condo with my boyfriend at the time.
16 years: I’m married to previously mentioned boyfriend; we own a house now on the other side of the city; I’m in my third full time job still making six figures and have been to 5+ concerts, my first EDM fest and have many more to go….all music and artists I was listening to 16 years ago. I also have no kids!!!
I really thought when I made that post I had a few years left. My life past 18 was dark. Post 21, it was completely black with nothing.
I’m now 31, thriving, and thankful every single day for that cringe ass era of the internet keeping me alive another day at a time.
And now, we laugh at some of my favorite commentary.
@glowtech, same. it wasn’t without a few actual hospitalizations here and there.
@angels-in-overcoats ….will not deny it at all. We all had a specific superiority complex using Tumblr back then. All the cult comments actually make me cackle because we really did have a loyalty to this platform that doesn’t really exist anymore in internet culture.
@il-lui-serra-la-main, you think YOU want to claw your brain out?! I can’t even look in my archive without heaving 😭 I don’t know why I haven’t nuked this shit yet.
@heritageposts LMAAAAAAAOOOOOOOO I got a whole blog worth of content that evokes negative emotion, pre-2010. I’ll have to send through some.
@caecilius-est-pater God if I could get Keanu Reeves to read my words as a parody I’d die happy.
@euchreiade, I actually never thought Tumblr would still be here. I thought it’d all explode like MySpace did.
@finalgirlkatya so funny story I only had the 5 year gap because Tumblr instituted MFA and I accidentally deleted the email that my account was registered to, even though I had the password. I had to do a deep search to find the correct spelling of my blog name because they had no other identifying information of me because I signed up when all you needed was an email and password lol. Took me years to get access back.
@genderascendant I mean it kinda was lmaaaaoo I was absolutely exaggerating and also making fun of how insane it all was. Frankly it was a preview of the times to come…
@emarezi I wanted to make it on the homepage lmao and I succeeded!
Alright. Time to figure out what to do with this……time capsule.
