neku’s response to rhyme’s sudden death is also really interesting. without context it seems like he’s just being cold and uncaring. but with context?

he had a best friend once who suddenly died in an accident on his way to meet with neku. neku blamed himself for the event and resolved to close himself off from the world. in his mind, making friends only put him at risk of getting his heart broken, so if he never got attached again, he’d never be hurt again. that’s the explanation for why he’s seemingly so emo.

even better, neku at this point in time has amnesia. he can’t remember his past, but his personality is the same, so the events that happened to him still have a subconscious effect on him. while he can’t remember his friend’s tragic death, he lets it slip to shiki in this very scene that he’s afraid of making friends for the reason i stated above. ough.

in neku’s internal monologue we see him thinking about how he feels awful about this, and that it reminds him of ‘that time’, but then he immediately questions what it is that he’s remembering. so there’s clear evidence of some concrete yet mysterious incident that happened to him once upon a time. replaying the game and knowing what he’s talking about this time hits so hard
