Orava Castle, Slovakia🇸🇰
Orava Castle is one of the most famous and dramatic castles in Slovakia. Perched high on a rocky cliff above the Orava River, it dominates the surrounding landscape and is considered a symbol of northern Slovakia.
The castle was originally built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier wooden fortification. It became an important defensive stronghold of the Kingdom of Hungary, protecting trade routes and regional borders.
Over the centuries, Orava Castle was expanded in Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, creating the impressive multi-level fortress seen today. It was owned by several noble families, including the powerful ThurzĂł family.
Today, Orava Castle is one of Slovakia’s most visited landmarks. It houses a museum of regional history and is also famous for appearing in the classic vampire film Nosferatu. Its cliffside location and medieval architecture make it one of the most spectacular castles in Central Europe.
