So, uh, yeah.

I know it’s been a while since this blog has been udpated. First Igot super depressed. Thennear-sucidal. Then I had to drop out of college. Then I lost one job and beefed up my hours at another. Then my college decided since I flunked out of a class, I counted as an “unofficial withdrawal”. Then they decided I owed them money to the tune of several hundred dollars. I shrugged– can’t get blood from a stone, right, and what could they do? Well, they could lock me out of my Google-apps-connected-but-still-a-university-related email. Where pretty much all of the submissions, art and writing, were stored. If anyone has been waiting on the zine before releasing art or stories or writing, you can go ahead and publish them. I’m still going to get this project made… somehow… but it’s unfair of me to have you all in limbo.

I’m not cancelling the zine. The work chosen for volume 1 of the zine will still be paid. I just need to be able to access it again.

Answers to some questions

Yes, I am still planning on going forward with the zine No, I’m still working out the details. Yes, I am aware of tobyfox’s change of policy regarding charging for zines. No, I’m still not going to charge for it. Yes, I am still going to pay artists and writers at agreed upon rates for work. NO, I can not going to proceed forward until I can get access to my old university email again.

Yes, I feel horrible about this. No, I am not, as 38 people suggested, going to kill myself and do the world/internet/fandom a favor.

Undertale Fanzine Submission Call (Updated)

Undertales is a print-quality fanzine that will be available FOR FREE as a digital download suitable for printing, and will feature contributed works by Undertale fans, for Undertale fans, and of spiders fans! This is going to be a labor of love I’ll be paying for out of pocket, but I can’t do it alone.

I’m looking for text submissions and art submissions for our first issue. Here are the requirements:

Text submissions

can be essays, articles, personal fan fiction, poetry, or the like

 can range from the serious (I’m writing about how certain character arcs resonate with me as an abuse survivor), light-hearted, or anything in between

fan fiction must not contain explicitly sexual content

Must be submitted in either plaintext in the body of your email, .doc format, or PDF format

can be no longer than 1100 words

Accepted work will be paid at the rate of 1.5 (one and a half) cents per word

Please include the name you wish to be credited under in your byline.

Art submissions:

may be in full color, black and white or greyscale

can be created in any medium, but…

MUST be submitted in jpg or pdf format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi

must not contain explicitly sexual content

Accepted work will be paid at the following rates: $20 per full page page, $10 for spot art

Please include the name you wish to be credited under in your submission

Submission deadline is November 30th, 2015 by midnight, Eastern US time. Submit your contributions for consideration to [email protected]

Just wanted to let you know that I think it would be an option to ask for unpaid aka donated work. I have two pieces (more later/or less dif ones than now) rn that I would contribute. Some of the artists just need their work seen by a larger audience

Regarding the payment issue, what if people who wanted payment could receive payment, but those who would prefer to do it for free could turn down payment so you'd only have to pay those who requested payment when you decide on which art pieces you wanted to submit for the zine? I'm not very sure if this makes sense, haha

I think it would be fair to assume submissions will be paid, but allow unpaid ones to be 'donated' if the submitter clearly states as such. I mean, I intend to!

I’m gonna bring this up on the starmen forums too as well as send a blanket email to all those who’ve contributed so far asking for a little feedback. Looking forward to your submission.

Give people the option to be paid or work for free. That way, people who can't receive payment can still feel good about contributing, and those interested in money can still be sure they will be paid for their work.

THis does sound appealing, and a good compromise...

Maybe it would be easier to make it that if an artist doesn't want to be payed, they could just let you know that and submit their work for no payment? That way most artists can be payed for their work, but any of them could submit it for no pay if it makes it easier and/or makes them more comfortable.

That sounds like a workable idea. Followers, your thoughts?

Hi! Sorry people have been giving you a hard time. I think it's really awesome that you're putting this zine together! I was wondering if you considered taking out the payment part for the zine? I'd love to just contribute as a fan, and I think a lot of people would love to be part of a community project w/out money. It'd take a lot of stress off your shoulders (being in charge of a zine is a lot of work/money tends to complicate things). It could be a labor of love we all work on together :)

I’m not sure. While making it non-paid would make it easier financially, and not result in people getting turned down for money reasons on my end, what about people that signed on to this project with the reasonable expectation they’d be paid? I advocate for creative types to be compensated for work all the time– would it be hypocritical to reverse my stance?Would it be worth it to include more art or text? How would people who’ve done art or writing just for the zine suddenly feel?Yes, it might be easier for me personally– I’m working 2 obs and going to college, but on job will only last the semester and the other is cutting everyone’s hours… bu the right thing isn’t always the easy thing.Followers, please weigh in?

I actually don’t want to contribute to the zine with it being a paid thing because of two reasons:

I don’t feel like my stuff is up to scratch compared to a lot of other stuff and I’d hate for my stuff to end up preventing something wonderful from being accepted (and at the same time would prefer to have my stuff get accepted)

It seems like a pretty big financial burden on you

I would reconsider if it weren’t a paid thing. Perhaps you should ask the people who have signed up so far if they are still fine with submitting without compensation.

I hadn’t even considered this perspective! I saw a paid opportunity as a way to be fair, but it seems for some of the responses I’m getting that could have been intimidating folks too. Yikes!

Maybe I don't know a lot about fanzines, but I am surprised that you were offering any money in the first place. Shouldn't something like this just be content contributed for passion of the subject? Isn't this how most all fan community projects work? I'm glad someone else mentioned this, because I agree that you should take that element out, it is much too dramatic.

Some zines offer payment for contribution, some don’t. As a creative professional myself, I’m loathe to just straight up assume someone should give of their time and effort to me for free right off the bat, I guess? I was also assuming I’d be able to charge a nominal fee, and with several contributors saying they would hold off on submitting anything until they got official okay from Toby, I reached out to Toby who approved the project under the condition that I receive $0 including production.While this meant I’d be taking offering print copies myself off the table, the saving in materials cost was balanced out by the opportunity to have more people. Which got balanced out again by my work hours being cut recently.So... yeah.
