Every thing I learn about this movie makes me both tired and angry about anglo-american colonialistic hollywood industry.
And don't get me started about "details" like using FUCKING pants FOR GREEKS, who famously thought it was a characteristic of Barbarians, (who they thought were inferior btw)
ALSO where are the FUCKING COLORS??!! We're talking about the Mediterranean for fucks sake!! I've seen bts pictures with the sea sunny and vibrant blue, and THEN the actual scene in the movie is FUCKING GREY FILTER
The movie could have been set in the british islands for all I know
And the clothes!!! Everything is grey or brown!! The greeks!!! Famously wearing clothes with NO COLOR!! And with no patterns or accessories!! NO hairdos, no ribbons, no curly beards, no nothing!
Everything is SO PLAIN and DULL and the armour looks like SHIT or straight out from 3d printed batman
And the statues!!! They look like cheap white cement!! Not marble!! And they're. Fucking. White!!!!!!!!! *screaming into the abyss*
And let's not talk about filming in protected areas, destroying natural sites and DUMPING tons of plastic SKELETONS on the sea, but they loaned a VIKING ship from a Swedish museum (A FUCKING VIKING SHIP I CAN'T) and they damaged it and they refused to pay a mere 6.000€ for the fucking materials of the reconstruction!! They're not even asking for the whole thing, just the fucking cost of the materials!!!
Everything about this movie makes me mad
And this is only image-wise. Narratively is even worse.
Like I get that usaians (or americans) have no concept of history like the rest of the world. Their country is funded on colonialism and if they learn about the history of the LAND they have to face it and that's a no-no for them. But hey, other countries have been invaded or have been the invaders and we still learn about the history of the land, not only the founding of the modern state. Why? Because History is the story of a consecutive list of different states or reigns or whatever in the same land (among other things)
So Mediterraneans learn about Phoenicians, Tartessos, Etruscans, Minoans, romans, greeks, celts, egyptians, etc. And among those cultures and societies that lasted centuries if not millenia, their clothes and art were not the same 1200 bce than 300 ce!!!
Imagine they made a movie set in ancient Egypt and they put medieval european ruffs on their characters!! (those uncomfortable looking white collars) and think "Naahh, what about it? A few centuries up or down, who cares?" We care!!!
Maybe for usaians history before the founding of their country is a vague monolitic thing and can't even fathom we have fucking active pubs and restaurants OLDER than their country. Hell, we have active acueducts and irrigation for our orchads that have been in use SINCE MORE THAN TWO (2) THOUSAND YEARS
Our history is rich and diverse and we acknowledge it and we don't think it started when a genocidal bastard "discovered" it. It's not our fault the average american know nothing about the history of their land and refuse to learn about those who lived before them, because at the end of the day their concept of history is inherently colonialistic and imperialistic.
So for those who lump everyone who thinks this movie is shit, no.
Some idiots rage about it bc some nonsense of being racially diverse (the Mediterranean!! oh god, someone pass me the salts!! Sacrilege!!) or have a trans person in it (oooh my fuuucking gooood, the famously binary Mediterranean, not like it's known as "Pot of Cultures Mediterranean")
The other part we rage about how they took an intrinsically greek myth we learn in fucking high school and made a FUCKING ABOMINATION, narratively, aesthetically and historically.
So no, we are not the same.
(Oh my god I'm so tired of this fucking movie.)
