1SA 26:8-11 NIV Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t strike him twice.” But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord ’s anointed and be guiltless? As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord ’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.” David had run away to get away from his psychotic king. Rather than harm him out fight back, David left. And Saul pursued him. Took an elite force out to destroy David. So David sneaks into the camp and gets close enough to spear Saul and end it, which is what Abishai recommends. David says no. God will take care of this. They instead take Saul's spear and water jug to show that they held his life in their hands and spared him. Even when "the LORD's anointed" has gone mad and the LORD has rejected him, David respects that Saul was appointed by God. What leaders do I question? Which ones do I claim are out of their minds? Or even worse, which ones do I hurt in smaller ways by dishonoring their leadership decisions? It's not my call. If they are in leadership, that is God's call. And no matter how off it seems, God will take care of it. Lord, help me to trust you and your appointed leaders. Help me to support and honor them. Give me faith that your ways are not my ways and that you have greater things in mind than anything I can see from my human vantage point. You are good. That is all I need to know. Amen.
