DANTALION’S ARMOR is elvish in style, originally stolen from a city warden and then laden with experimental magic; it came into his possession after his party caught and apprehended a member of an organized crime ring attempting to cause a war between the city-state from which it was stolen and the one which employs the group. it’s a studded leather +1 set, and requires attunement by an arcane spellcaster to take its effects: multiple enchantments allow the wearer to cast expeditious retreat, freedom of movement, invisibility, or mislead at will. the armor is not without its drawbacks, however; it seems to take spell slots at random upon waking, and dantalion’s been warned against overuse of it, though he’s not sure to what disastrous effect it may lead. DANTALION’S MANTLE is a custom enchantment, a crimson cape embroidered in gold, with wide sleeves which often hang by its sides, and he’s never seen without it. it does smell faintly of sulfur, but it’s hardly a drawback for him; wearing it allows dantalion to cast dimension door as an action once every long rest, though he can recharge it upon a short rest if his arcana is up to snuff. when he disappears, he leaves a cloud of smoke, though dantalion’s much more akin to changing it to a pigmented one, often also red, full of sparks and color-shifting glitter.

          dantalion ( sometimes dantalian ) is the seventy-first of seventy-two spirits in the lesser key of solomon, a duke of hell with thirty-six legions of demons at his command. dantalion is one of four demons in the ars goetia who does not appear in johann weyer’s pseudomonardia daemonium. dantalion appears as the form of  “ a Man with many Countenances, all Men's and Women's Faces; and he hath a Book in his right hand. ” his office is to teach the arts and sciences to those who summon him, and to  “ declare the Secret Counsel of any one; for he knoweth the Thoughts of all Men and Women, and can change them at his Will. He can cause Love, and show the Similitude of any person, and show the same by a Vision, let them be in what part of the World they Will. ”           while dantalion the unfathomable has no such lofty titles and has no demons by his command ( great old one pact, after all, ) the imagery here is key to his character; dantalion’s got a false identity and massive identity issues, is skilled with disguise, incredibly charismatic, has a coat that allows him to cast dimension door at will, and happens to have a cursed book. so, you know, it fits.

          dantalion’s adventuring party started out as an assigned group when they all responded to an advertisement to help escort a caravan; dantalion wanted to test out his new abilities and earn rent, but he ends up continuing these endeavors with the group assigned to his wagon. this consists of galvan, a human acolyte rogue carrying the blessings of sarenrae, and valaris, a dragonborn fighter and bumbling investigator with the city watch. these three get along marvelously well — dantalion’s even been quasi-adopted by valaris’s ( halfling, adoptive ) parents. unfortnuately, the three get very quickly wrapped up in a conspiracy involving the summoning of some ... undesirable gods.            when last we left the group, they’d teamed up with amdusias, a wannabe-rockstar tiefling bard, and gone through the gauntlet of defeating avatars of zehir, lloth, and bane in succession — but in defeating the avatar of tiamat, both valaris and dantalion lost their lives. with no designated healer, galvan attempted to sacrifice his blessed staff to resurrect dantalion; this failed, the blessing outright rejected ( presumably ) from dendar’s influence on dantalion. regardless, he woke a day later, and assisted in the attempt to resurrect valaris. this does work. this is the first indication dantalion’s gotten that he may not be strictly alive, but, as our dm stopped planning this campaign around a year ago, we’ll never know if he truly found out.
