André's attention was set on the woman. Did they know each other? Probably not, she most likely came there every now and then but definitely wasn't a regular. He tried to at least remember those.

— I can't say the idea haven't crossed my mind, however it requires more than just hiring someone. — He stated. He needed to make sure there was an appropriate space for a live performance. Would he miss on tables if one was added? Was there demand for it? While the idea was good, not everyone liked live music. Could ruin the whole idea of his place. He tried to make everyone there feels like family, after all. — Are you applying for a position if it ever opens, madame?

she gave a one-shouldered shrug, willing to entertain the prospect for the sake of her own amusement, but not caring to commit to it. ❝ oh, perhaps, ❞ she said airily, tapping immaculate fingernails against the cut-crystal of her glass. in all honesty, sabine rather liked the idea of working somewhere where her husband wasn't the doorman, but there would certainly be drawbacks as well. for a start, she preferred her bosses a little less solemn, less dour. ❝ it would depend on the salary, of course, and on the perks. the diamond room pays its entertainers quite handsomely — i trust you'd do the same? ❞

☆ﾟ*·ﾟexploring was part of allyson's nature. she'd very easily find herself in a place where she shouldn't be. and tonight was one of those nights. the blonde had donned one of her favorite flowery dresses and followed people into what was called the diamond room. it was beautiful in here, but mostly because there were people that loved what they did. as she saw a stage, allyson couldn't help but be excited. where to sit, she had no idea. when she heard someone's voice, allyson jumped, squealing lightly. "oh, sorry! uhm... yeah! i followed someone in here and it looked fun." tilting her head to the side, allyson's hands went over her mouth. "wait, what does usual mean? am i going to get splashed or something? should i not be in here?" now allyson felt bad for being somewhere she possibly shouldn't have.

splashed? for a moment, sabine's much-practiced smile flickered, replaced by a look of true bemusement. her first thought was that there was a joke here she hadn't quite understood ( some bit of nuance she'd missed, perhaps, never quite as fluent in english as she was in her native tongue ) but the girl looked perfectly sincere. not even a hint of humour there, it seemed. ❝ not at all, ❞ she said swiftly, not wanting to discourage someone who might be a ( paying ) customer. she took the girl's elbow, steering her gently to the side and towards the back tables, out of the way of the bustling waiters and patrons. ❝ don't fret, anyone is welcome at the diamond room, so long as they have a love of music and a wish to enjoy themselves. ❞

a new face in the speakeasy was always cause for interest and his, in particular, struck sabine as more interesting than most. she'd always made a habit of getting to know the patrons, mingling with the audience between performances, and tonight, she'd practically made a beeline right to his table. ❝ pardon me, monsieur, ❞ she began, bobbing a brief curtsy, her smile artfully courteous. it never hurt to ingratiate oneself with the more refined and cultured patrons, after all. the chair beside his was empty — she put her hand on the back, hesitating as if not sure whether she should sit down with him or not. looking at him curiously, a question in her eyes. ❝ maybe it's too bold of me to say so, but i can't help noticing you're here alone. was that by choice? or just necessity? ❞

⸻ ･ﾟ ✧ his laugh was bright, boisterously reverberating throughout the diamond room as if they were the only people there. and for a moment julian supposed they truly were as both music and chatter gradually faded into the background. leaving only her to focus on, a woman so unlike anyone he’d ever met before. properly enchanted and delightfully giddy, julian continued his tale. “ —and then the bastard stole the guitar. ” he winced ever so slightly at the memory, both hands moving to cover his cheeks as they reddened significantly. “ i had to walk home all by myself, entirely soaked. thereafter i had to explain to father what happened to his precious heirloom. i wasn’t keen on giving up music, but i’ve been prohibited from touching a guitar ever since. so i suppose nowadays the flute is my most cherished companion. ”

if sabine's smile had been a little artificial before, it wasn't any longer. already, he'd won a laugh from her — not the flirtatious giggle she so often gave patrons at the diamond room, making hollow small-talk with them between performances, but a true and genuine peal of laughter. pleased and surprised in equal measure. she'd never been able to resist a good story well-told, and if she heard it from the lips of a strapping young stranger? why, even better. ❝ there, m'sieur, you see? ❞ she teased, leaning in conspiratorially close, the silvery swirls of makeup on her cheeks glimmering in the candlelight. tonight, she was meant to be a swan, all in white silks. ❝ i knew it from the moment i set eyes on you — you have a musician's hands. i took one look and thought: the flute. ❞ and very fine hands they were, too, she thought. just as eager and expressive as the man himself, carving such fascinating shapes out of the air. ❝ but tell me, where would i go if i wished to hear you play? do you perform? ❞

in all honesty, books had never been objects of particular interest to sabine. she liked stories best when they were the kind you told aloud — when the words tripped off your tongue, crackling and snappy and free, instead of laying about so lifelessly on the page. so it wasn't the shelves books that brought her back to the emerald nook so often, but rather, the presence of a woman who she greatly admired. ❝ listen, chérie, ❞ she began, idly turning the pages of a book of poems, and eyeing ingrid thoughtfully through mascara-thick lashes all the while. ❝ why don't you come out to the diamond room tonight? you work so hard, you deserve to enjoy yourself a little. i'll even dedicate a song to you. ❞

she threw him only the briefest of glances over her shoulder, wry and contemptuous, before turning back to the dressing room mirror again. dipping a brush into a pot of rouge, beginning to paint her lips boldly. the show must go on, after all. ❝ mon cher, i've been thinking ― don't you think it would be better if i don't introduce myself as your wife, just while we're here? ❞ she asked, trying not to sound too hopeful. ❝ while we're working? i'm sure i'd get much better tips if they didn't know about my strong, handsome husband. ❞

it wasn't too often that sabine got a night off from performing at the diamond room, but — on those rare occasions — she liked to go elsewhere to drink and to enjoy herself. less chance of meeting her husband. ❝ you know, monsieur, you should really think about getting a little live music in here, ❞ she remarked, chin in her hand as she leaned against the bar, giving him her best and most teasing smile. not that she was that keen to find a new job (or a new boss, for that matter) but still, it never hurt to sow the seeds. ❝ your customers would surely appreciate it, no? ❞

head tipped inquisitively to one side, leaning her elbows on the bar, sabine eyed the girl curiously. studied her. as a performer, she believed in getting to know her audience for the night — if only in the hopes of getting an extra tip or two. ❝ tell me, ma petite, is this the first time we've had the privilege of seeing you at the diamond room? ❞ she asked, arching her eyebrows as she looked the other up and down. ❝ i must admit, you don't look quite like our usual sort of patron. ❞

a cold wind whistled over the gravestones, a thoroughly lonely and haunting sound, but sabine barely noticed it. if there were any restless ghosts wandering in the dark, they were the last thing she had to worry about. it was the living who seemed a far greater threat tonight — in particular, the man standing in front of her now. his smile pleasant, his eyes bright and dark as flint. watching her expectantly. reluctantly, she slipped a hand into the pocket of her fur-lined coat, drawing out the little purse of coins. she dropped it in his outstretched palm. ❝ my letters, m’sieur, ❞ she said, prompting him, taking care to keep her voice light. her head held high, chin raised — poised and perfectly unbothered, even as her stomach knotted with a sickening anxiety. ❝ i believe that was our agreement, no? ❞ he held the purse up, examining it in the pale moonlight, then gave her another polite ( nearly apologetic ) smile. ❝ surely, madam dupont, it's better if i hold onto them. i wouldn't want to cause you or my employer any more embarrassment. ❞ she opened her mouth to protest, but he was already brushing past her, making his way towards the graveyard gates. vanishing into the dark. too late. and anyway, what could she truly have said? there were so few cards in her hand left to play, when he'd already proved himself immune to both her charms and her fury. alone among the stones, she stared blindly at nothing, feeling tears begin to prickle at her eyes, a bitter frustration rising. bile in her throat. and then she heard it — a crackling among the dead leaves, a footstep. her first absurd thought was that it was him, come back to savour his triumph over her. that, or a ghost. she blinked hard, trying to collect herself again. turned quickly to look around, dark eyes wide and wary. ❝ who's there? ❞
