“I’m not sure if I ever loved you.” His voice was deadpan as he spoke, seemingly unaware of the effect those words had on me.

The bottom of my heart fell out. Not literally of course, but it may as well have for all the good it was right now. Surely, surely he didn’t mean that. Surely he meant something else. Because otherwise this feeling, this hole in my chest would just expand until it swallowed me whole.

Oh.

Tears blurred my vision and overflowed onto my cheeks, stinging them. I tried to hold in the sobs that threatened to overtake me, I didn’t want him to see just how much I was hurting, how badly that small sentence had broken me. I had given this man my all, had been trying to help raise him up as any good person would do. Time and time again I had held him and comforted him, trying my best to ease his pain. And now he wasn’t even sure if he loved me.
