--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet of the desert night died the exact microsecond the temple’s inner sanctum fractured. Shang Tsung’s forces didn't arrive with a rhythmic march; they tore through the fabric of the realm, a sudden, violent convergence of localized spatial anomalies that filled the ancient courtyard with the stench of sulphur, old blood, and decayed souls.
But Earthrealm’s baseline didn't collapse this time. Lord Raiden’s divine staff struck the sand-dusted stone floor.
A blinding cascade of blinding white-blue lightning exploded outward, ; he systematically recalculated the coordinates of the entire battlefield, forcing a mass tactical displacement. In a single heartbeat, the crowded, chaotic brawl was shattered, and the warriors of Earthrealm and Outworld were violently teleported to isolated, highly specific parameters across the globe to execute their one-on-one execution strategies.
Deep within the cavernous, industrialized iron works of an abandoned refinery, the air vibrated with a sudden, metallic hum. Jax Briggs materialized flat on his boots, the heavy joints of his newly awakened mechanical arms whistling as they pressurized. Across the rusted catwalk, Reiko emerged from the blue arc, his massive, spiked war hammer trailing behind him as he let out a guttural, bloodthirsty roar. Reiko didn't calculate angles; he charged with the sheer kinetic force of a battering ram, swinging the colossal hammer in a horizontal arc designed to crush human bone into paste.
Jax didn't flinch. He planted his heavy boots into the iron grating, his golden-clad forearms crossing to meet the blow head-on. The impact rang out like a church bell, sparks showering into the dark. Reiko’s eyes widened in pure shock as Jax didn't yield an inch. With a low, rumbling growl, Jax engaged the hydraulic boosters in his pistons. He deflected the hammer upward, exposing Reiko’s armored torso, and drove a relentless, machine-assisted pincer movement of alternating hooks directly into the brute's ribs, systematically matching and then entirely overriding Outworld’s raw power.
Simultaneously, thousands of miles away in a desolate, ice-locked northern pass, the ambient temperature plummeted to absolute zero. Cole Young materialized amidst a blinding blizzard, his golden, woven armor instantly manifesting across his chest and arms to absorb the sudden atmospheric shock. From the swirling white mist, Sub-Zero stepped forward, the air freezing solid around his palms as he manifested two jagged, crystalline ice daggers.
"You hide behind a dead god's armor," Sub-Zero hissed, his voice like cracking glaciers as he lunged forward, executing a lethal sequence of slashes that chipped violently against Cole’s defenses.
But Cole’s baseline was built on endurance. Every frozen blade that struck his armor didn't break him; it fed the kinetic energy stores of his suit. The armor began to pulse with a fierce, gold-orange radiance. As Sub-Zero channeled a massive, horizontal wave of freezing mist to blind his peripheral tracking, Cole closed his eyes, relying entirely on the behavioral weight-shifts he had practiced in the ring. He slipped beneath a lethal high-line slash, ducked into Sub-Zero's blind spot, and drove his reinforced fists upward, shattering the cryomancer's icy constructs and forcing the executioner into a desperate, defensive retreat.
Meanwhile, in a narrow, claustrophobic stone corridor buried deep beneath an ancient ruin, Sonya Blade faced her parasite. Mileena dropped from the high, shadow-drenched ceiling like a hunting arachnid, her purple spatial teleports cutting through the air with a sickening, wet pop. Her jaw unhinged, exposing rows of razor-sharp, mutant teeth as she lunged at Sonya's throat.
"I'm going to taste your pretty skin," Mileena snarled, her dual sai daggers flashing in the dim light.
Sonya didn't chase her. Remembering the exact tactical data, she backed up until her shoulders nearly grazed the narrow stone walls, restricting Mileena’s vertical jump variables completely. The moment Mileena’s weight shifted heavily onto her right heel to initiate another mid-air teleport, Sonya anticipated the exact spatial exit point. She slammed her wrists together. A blinding, high-frequency pink sonic ring exploded from her Arcana bands, catching Mileena dead-center the microsecond she materialized in the air. The sheer kinetic pressure cracked through the corridor, shattering Mileena’s equilibrium and sending her crashing violently into the stone floor, her erratic mobility permanently compromised.
But the primary tactical variable, the highest density threat, was unfolding on the crumbling, fractured stone remnants of the ancient bridge spanning the eastern gorges back near the temple perimeter. The wind here was a freezing, howling draft that whipped up from the abyss below, carrying sharp grains of sand that bit into your skin.
You and Liu Kang materialized back-to-back, your boots catching the loose, uneven gravel of the narrow walkway.
A high-velocity, mechanical whirring echoed from the far end of the bridge. Out from the swirling dust storms stepped Kabal. His rusted, iron respirator mask hissed rhythmically, his dual hook swords scraping against the stone as he dragged them along the ground, leaving a trail of yellow sparks.
"Well, look at the lovebirds," Kabal’s raspy, distorted voice echoed through his mask. "The monk and the doctor. Let’s see how fast those hearts beat when I rip 'em out."
"Stay centered, y/n," Liu Kang murmured, his voice low, steady, and incredibly hot against your shoulder. The crimson dragon mark on his bare chest was already pulsing with a dangerous, rhythmic amber light. "Do not let him dictate the perimeter."
"Tracking his variables now," you replied, your fingers tightening around the grips of your dual alloy daggers, your heart hammering a steady, controlled rhythm against your ribs. "He’s shifting his weight. Left foot forward. He’s accelerating."
Before the sentence could fully leave your mouth, Kabal vanished into a blinding, horizontal blur of pure speed.
A violent, localized dust storm whipped across the bridge as Kabal achieved high-velocity momentum. He didn't just run; he became a kinetic blur, a sonic dust cloud tearing straight down the center line of the walkway.
"On your left!" you shouted, your analytical tracking picking up the faint, mechanical hum of his respirator just before he hit.
Liu Kang pivoted instantly, his forearms rising in a rigid Shaolin block just as Kabal materialized from the blur. The hook swords slammed against Liu’s heated bracers with a deafening metallic screech. The impact forced Liu back half a step, his boots digging into the loose gravel. Kabal didn't commit to the struggle; he immediately dissolved back into a high-speed blur, circling your perimeter like a cyclone.
The speed was exponential. Kabal caught your right shoulder on his next pass, the tip of his hooked blade tearing through your jacket and leaving a shallow, burning laceration across your skin. You gasped from the sudden sting, your capacity taking a minor hit as blood began to stain the fabric.
"Y/n!" Liu called out, his fire flaring aggressively in response to your injury.
"I’m fine! Keep the center!" you yelled back, ignoring the pain as you locked your eyes on the ground. You weren't looking at Kabal; you were looking at the sand. As Kabal tore around you, his high-speed turns were throwing up distinct, heavy plumes of dust from the loose gravel sections. "Liu! The crumbling pillar at the three-o'clock position! Burn the base! Force his traction to drop!"
Liu Kang didn't hesitate. He dropped into a low, powerful stance, his palms slamming flat against the ancient stone floor of the bridge. A torrent of liquid, roaring fire surged forward, traveling through the cracks in the masonry like molten lava. The fire erupted directly beneath the massive, half-collapsed stone column Kabal was using to anchor his high-speed turns.
The heat was so intense it caused the ancient mortar to instantly vaporize. The massive stone pillar cracked with a deafening groan, collapsing directly into Kabal's linear path.
Kabal’s respirator hissed in panic as his high-velocity blur hit the loose, shifting debris. Without solid, flat ground, his traction dropped exponentially. His boots skidded wildly across the rolling gravel, his momentum forcing him to slow down to a grinding halt to avoid plunging over the edge of the gorge.
You lunged forward, your Arcana finally igniting deep within your core. Your specific power wasn't a blunt instrument; it was an analytical, energy-focusing barrier system. As you drove your daggers forward, your Arcana manifested as sharp, geometric walls of solid, translucent blue force fields, dropping directly into the narrow pathways surrounding Kabal, effectively boxing him into a three-foot enclosure.
Kabal swung his hook swords wildly, shattering the first two force fields with raw kinetic desperation, but the restriction was enough. He was completely trapped in a corner.
Liu Kang closed the distance like a leaping tiger. His right fist was engulfed in a roaring, white-hot sphere of Shaolin fire. He drove a devastating, straight punch directly into Kabal’s chest, the impact shattering the speedster's rusted chest plate and sending him flying backward against the remaining stone masonry.
But just as you stepped forward to reinforce the perimeter and finalize the execution of the plan, the atmospheric pressure on the bridge violently inverted.
The air turned thick, frigid, and green. A massive, swirling vortex of decayed souls erupted directly in the center of the walkway, the screaming faces of a thousand stolen lifeforces swirling in a sickening emerald cyclone.
Out from the green mist stepped Shang Tsung. His long, ornate robes billowed around his withered, ancient frame, his eyes glowing with an unholy, green malice as he looked at the two of you.
"You think a few parlor tricks will save this pathetic realm?" Shang Tsung hissed, his voice echoing with the layered, terrifying resonance of a thousand stolen souls. "You are nothing but meat for the pits, doctor. And your champion will watch you burn ...just like...his...brother."
Before Liu could adjust his stance, Shang Tsung raised his hands. A devastating, high-density blast of green soul fire tore across the bridge. Liu threw himself in front of you, his arms crossing as he manifested a massive, defensive shield of orange flames to intercept the attack.
The collision of magical energies was catastrophic. The explosion of green and orange fire tore through the masonry of the bridge, causing the stone beneath your feet to violently tremble and crack. The sheer concussive force blew both you and Liu Kang backward. You hit the hard stone floor heavily, rolling through the rough sand and gravel, your breath escaping you in a ragged, painful gasp as a deep bruise formed along your ribs.
Liu hit the ground a few feet away, his bare chest covered in dark soot and light lacerations from the flying stone shrapnel. He pushed himself up onto one knee, his breathing ragged, his amber eyes flashing with a desperate, protective fury as he saw you struggling to stand.
"Two against one," Kabal rasped, pushing himself up from the rubble behind Shang Tsung, his respirator hissing weakly but his hook swords re-engaging. "Now that's my kind of math."
Shang Tsung smiled, a cruel, predatory curl of his lips as he began to siphon energy from the air, preparing a dual-pronged strike to eliminate both of your baselines permanently. "Your fire is spent, Shaolin. And your anchor is broken."
"It... is not broken," you whispered, pushing yourself up from the sand. The physical trauma was severe, but looking at Liu’s bruised, bleeding form, a sudden, fierce wave of total defiance overridden your system. You weren't a passive researcher anymore. You were a champion that refused to be erased.
You stood completely upright, your boots planting firmly into the dust. You extended both of your hands toward Shang Tsung, your fingers splaying wide as you tapped into the absolute maximum potential of your Arcana.
The air didn't just heat up; it vibrated with a massive, high-density electrical hum. Your Arcana exploded outward, not as a simple defensive wall, but as a colossal, interlocking matrix of geometric force fields that systematically enclosed Shang Tsung within a high-pressure kinetic vise with an enclosure of fast-moving blades. The translucent black and red panels slammed together around the sorcerer, the internal pressure building so fast that the souls swirling around his robes began to scream in agony as their ethereal structures were compressed.
"What is this?!" Shang Tsung roared, his green energy flaring aggressively as he slammed his fists against your barriers, trying to break the containment. The sheer feedback of his magical strikes traveled down your arms, causing your muscles to scream in agony and blood to trickle from your ears and nose from the immense strain, but you refused to let go. You held the parameters locked.
"Liu! Now!" you screamed, your vision blurring at the edges as you poured every single ounce of your biological energy into holding the ancient sorcerer in place. "Kabal is exposed! Finish him"
Liu Kang looked at you, seeing the absolute, unyielding sacrifice in your eyes, and his entire system achieved a level of thermal output he had never reached before in his life. The dragon mark on his chest didn't just pulse; it erupted into a blinding, white-hot radiance that completely illuminated the dark gorge.
"For Kung Lao..." Liu Kang whispered, his voice dropping into a deep, terrifyingly reverent register that carried the weight of the entire Shaolin ancestry.
He raised both of his hands toward the dark sky. A massive, roaring serpent of pure, unadulterated orange and white fire manifested from his palms, the eastern dragon circling his torso before expanding into a thirty-foot beast of pure thermal destruction.
Kabal’s respirator hissed in absolute terror as he realized he had nowhere to run, his speed completely useless against an attack that consumed the entire width of the bridge.
"FATALITY!" Liu Kang roared, his voice echoing like thunder through the canyon as he threw his hands forward.
The massive fire dragon surged down the length of the bridge. Seeing the catastrophic, white-hot output heading directly toward the perimeter, Shang Tsung realized that if he stayed to fight your barrier, the dragon would consume him as well. With a desperate, choked curse, the sorcerer utilized a massive amount of his remaining souls to violently warp space, dissolving into a frantic green mist and escaping back through the rifts just before the impact hit.
But Kabal had no portals.
The fire dragon slammed dead-center into the speedster. The sheer, unrestricted maximum output of Liu's fire completely engulfed Kabal in a roaring inferno. The heat was so immense it vaporized his hook swords and melted his mechanical respirator in a matter of seconds. Kabal let out one final, distorted shriek before his entire structure was set completely on fire, his kinetic energy permanently reduced to ash as he collapsed into the deep abyss of the gorge below.
The moment the dragon dissipated, the massive, high-pressure matrix of your Arcana dissolved into nothingness. The sudden release of the operational strain caused your knees to completely give out. You collapsed forward onto your hands and knees, your chest heaving as you drew in ragged, desperate gulps of the cool desert air, your heart hammering a frantic, erratic baseline against your ribs.
The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the low, crackling embers of the charred stone bridge and the distant hiss of the cooling sand.
A pair of heavy, dust-covered boots stepped into your field of vision.
Liu Kang dropped down to his knees right in front of you. His bare chest was completely coated in a thick, uneven layer of black soot, gray ash, and yellow desert dirt, his long dark hair wildly disheveled and sticking to the sweat on his forehead. He looked like he had been dragged through an active volcano and then tossed into a sandstorm. His hands, still radiating a faint, comforting residual heat, gently grasped your shoulders, lifting you up so he could check your vital signs.
"Y/n," Liu breathed, his voice rough, raspy, and completely stripped of his usual composed monk outlook. His amber eyes searched your face with a frantic, terrified intensity. "Look at me. Are you intact? The soul feedback... your breathing..."
You sat back on your heels, wiping the trace of blood from your nose with the back of your hand. You looked up at his face, taking in the absolute absurdity of his appearance, the pristine, immaculate Shaolin champion of Earthrealm was currently covered from head to toe in black soot, with a massive streak of yellow sand smeared across his left cheekbone like terrible war paint.
A sudden, strange tickle started in the center of your chest. The sheer, overwhelming cognitive whiplash of the situation, surviving an ancient sorcerer, vaporizing a cybernetic speedster, and sitting on a half-destroyed bridge in a cool night while looking at a legendary warrior who looked like a chimney sweep, completely broke your clinical restraint.
A small, breathless giggle escaped your lips.
Liu went completely rigid, his hands still holding your shoulders, his expression twisting into total, unadulterated confusion. "Y/n? Why... why are you making that sound? Is it a neurological side effect of the soul-drain? Are you experiencing an internal operational crash?"
That only made it worse. Hearing him format his deep, poetic concern using your clinical terminology while looking that ridiculous was the final hit. You buried your face in your hands, your shoulders shaking as a loud, genuine laugh broke through your exhaustion.
"Y/n, please," Liu stammered, his brow furrowing as he leaned closer, his touch entirely gentle. "I do not understand. We were nearly deleted from the realm. Why is it so funny?"
"I... I don't know, Liu!" you managed to choke out between laughs, lifting your head to look at him, tears of sheer relief and exhaustion pricking the corners of your eyes. "Look at you! You're covered... you're completely covered in dirt! The great champion of the Shaolin looks like an absolute mess!"
Liu blinked once. Twice. He looked down at his soot-stained chest, then reached up to touch his face, his fingers coming away coated in a thick mixture of gray ash and sand. He looked back at you, seeing the pure, unvarnished joy and survival high radiating from your face, and the heavy, oppressive wall of his stoic discipline completely crumbled.
A low, beautiful sound rumbled in his chest, a sound you had never heard from him before. Liu Kang started to laugh.
It was a deep, rich, and completely unpolished laugh, born from the absolute exhaustion of his muscles and the overwhelming, intoxicating realization that the fight was over and you were both still breathing. He let go of your shoulders and pulled you forward into his lap, his powerful arms wrapping tightly around your waist as the two of you sat in the middle of the ruined stone bridge, laughing like teenagers amidst the debris of a war zone.
"Maybe... maybe it is the exhaustion," Liu admitted, his chest heaving against yours as his laugh slowly quieted intoa deep, breathless smile. He rested his forehead against yours, his breath hot and sweet against your skin, his amber eyes glowing with a renewed, steady ferocity that had nothing to do with combat.
"We did it," you whispered, your hands resting flat against his warm, soot-stained chest, your fingers tracing the edge of the dragon mark. "I didn't think... against Shang Tsung and Kabal at the same time... the mathematical probability was so low, Liu."
"I do not care about the probabilities anymore," Liu murmured, his voice dropping into a low, fiercely reverent register.
He leaned in and kissed you.
The kiss wasn't fueled by the frantic, terrifying panic of the bedroom hours before; it was an embrace born from pure, unadulterated love, an overwhelming thankfulness, and a profound gratitude to every single entity and being in the universe that had allowed you to survive the dawn. His lips were warm, soft, and completely possessive, moving against yours with a slow, deliberate tenderness that tasted of salt, dust, and an unshakeable, eternal commitment. He pulled you flush against his chest, his fingers tangling into your hair, completely unbothered by the dirt or the wounds or the cold desert breeze swirling around you.
When he finally pulled back, just an inch, his amber eyes were locked onto yours with an intensity that anchored your entire system. He reached down, slipping his hand firmly into yours, his fingers interlocking with an unshakeable grip that completely banished the lingering chill of the night.
"Come," Liu said softly, helping you stand up from the debris, his shoulder remaining close enough to support your weak legs. "The others will be returning to the courtyard. Let us see how the rest of our family executed the plan."
Turning your backs on the charred gorge and the ashes of the speedster, you walked down the ruined path back toward the main pavilion together, the heat of his hand keeping the cold desert night entirely at bay, ready to face whatever variables the tournament had left to throw at you.
The remaining crackle of the high-velocity fire matrix still buzzed under your skin as Lord Raiden raised his staff once more. The environment fractured instantly. The ruined stone bridge and the cold desert winds vanished, replaced by the heavy, damp, and suffocating atmosphere of an frozen, modern cage fighting gym. The air here was thick with the scent of stagnant water, rust, and the terrifying, sharp ozone stench of flash-melted ice.
You and Liu Kang materialized side by side, boots skidding slightly on the wet, concrete floor. Your hands automatically rose, daggers tracking the room for threats, but the battle was already over.
In the center of the shattered chain-link ring stood Cole Young. He was breathing in heavy, ragged gasps, his golden armor slowly receding back into his skin. Scattered across the flooded floor were the smoking, pulverized remnants of Sub-Zero. The legendary cryomancer hadn't just been defeated; Cole had literally blown him to smithereens.
Lord Raiden walked forward, his long white robes trailing through the shallow pools of water as his glowing blue eyes swept over the scorched concrete. He stopped right at the edge of the blast radius, looking down at the scattered, blackened fragments of Sub-Zero's armor burnt to the ground.
A sharp crack of lightning echoed behind you, and the rest of the team was portaled into the room. Sonya Blade materialized with her arms crossed, her breathing shallow but her stance triumphant, alongside Jax Briggs, whose heavy mechanical arms whirred softly as he settled his knuckles. Both stood tall as the undeniable victors of their respective isolated fights.
Raiden turned slowly to face the gathered group, a profound, uncharacteristic look of approval softening his divine features. "I’m impressed," he said, his deep voice booming off the corrugated iron walls of the gym.
Cole, still trembling slightly from the sheer volume of ancestral energy rushing through his veins, looked down at his right hand. He was tightly gripping Hanzo Hasashi’s ancient, cloth-wrapped blade, the very weapon whose vengeful, hellfire spirit had just manifested from the Netherrealm to help Cole finally break the cryomancer's generational curse. Cole looked up from the blade, his eyes locking onto the thunder god.
"I thought you couldn't get involved," Cole panted, nodding slightly toward the divine weapon that had swung the balance of the universe.
Raiden didn't offer a grand, philosophical lecture. He simply stood there, a quiet, knowing smile tugging at the corners of his lips as the blue electricity faded from his eyes.
Your eyes shifted past Cole, tracking the psychological and physical state of the room, and immediately locked onto his family. Cole’s wife, Allison, and his young daughter, Emily, were sitting huddled against a row of rusted gym benches. They were completely drenched from head to toe, shivering violently in the damp air because they had been frozen solid in Sub-Zero's ice constructs before the vengeful spirit of Hanzo freed them with his roaring hellfire.
You looked at Liu Kang, your features twisting with an immediate, deep analytical worry for their body temperatures. "Liu," you murmured, shifting your weight toward the family.
Liu didn't need a full behavioral breakdown to understand the urgency. He walked over to the shivering family smoothly, his stance radiating a massive wave of natural, comforting thermal energy. He dropped down to one knee right in front of Allison and Emily, his dark eyes melting into an incredibly soft, reassuring warmth.
"Here," Liu said gently. He upturned his right palm, and with a soft fshhh, a perfectly controlled, small sphere of bright orange fire bloomed just inches above his skin, acting as a miniature radiator in the freezing room. "Sit close. I will warm you."
While Liu anchored their physical recovery, your practical, fast-moving eyes scanned the perimeter of the locker room. Spotting a heavy metal supply cage in the corner, you dashed over, ripping the door open and grabbing a stack of thick, coarse white gym towels. You hurried back, throwing the dry fabric around the shoulders of Cole’s wife and daughter, tucking it tightly around Emily’s shivering frame to trap Liu’s radiating heat.
"Keep your core wrapped," you instructed softly, checking Emily's capillary refill with a quick, reassuring squeeze of her fingers. "The baseline will stabilize in a few minutes. Homeostasis isn't funny business."
Just as the family began to stop shivering, your internal sensory tracking picked up a sharp, jarring frequency change in the far, left-most corner of the cavernous room. The ambient air pressure plummeted, turning thick, stagnant, and sickeningly green.
You snapped your head around, your hand instinctively dropping to your dagger hilt. "Raiden..." you warned, your voice dropping into a tense, operational register.
Raiden didn't look back; his eyes were already fixed on the corner as the shadows violently tore apart. "Shang Tsung..." the thunder god rumbled.
Out from a dense, swirling vortex of decayed emerald souls stepped the sorcerer. Shang Tsung’s ornate silk robes swept through the puddles of water, his face twisted into an unholy, venomous sneer as he looked at the gathered champions of Earthrealm.
Raiden took a commanding step forward, his staff clacking sharply against the wet concrete. "The prophecy has been fulfilled," Raiden spoke, his voice vibrating with absolute authority as he hinted heavily to how Cole had successfully carried on the bloodline, lineage, and unyielding power of Hanzo Hasashi. "Has the blood on your hands told you nothing?"
Shang Tsung let out a low, raspy laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping over a grave. He stood tall, refusing to show a single variable of fear despite the absolute slaughter of his executioners.
"No matter how many of my people you put in the ground, there will always be another to take their place," Shang Tsung hissed, his dark eyes sweeping over you, Liu, Jax, Sonya, and Cole with lethal promise. "Today you have killed my warriors and think you have won. But death... death is only another portal."
Before anyone could strike, a thick, pitch-black, suffocating smoke began to pour from the sleeves of Shang Tsung’s robes, rapidly enveloping his entire frame like a toxic shroud. His face began to dissolve into the dark cloud, but his final, booming threat echoed clearly through the gym.
"Next time I see you, I will not bring fighters," the sorcerer snarled from the shadows. "I will bring armies."
"You will return to Outworld at once, sorcerer!" Raiden commanded, his patience completely depleted.
Shang Tsung’s obscured, arrogant voice threw back one last declaration. "EARTH WILL—"
Before the sorcerer could even complete his final word, Raiden’s hand snapped upward. Blinding, white and blue thunder ignited at his very fingertips, crackling with an immense, divine might that completely illuminated the rusted ceiling. Raiden drove the lightning bolt straight into the center of the black smoke.
The absolute force of the divine strike hit Shang Tsung dead-center. The sorcerer was violently enveloped by the blue electricity, his sentence cut off in a choked gasp as the lightning physically forced his atomic structure back through the rifts, sending him hurtling violently back to Outworld. The black smoke dissipated instantly, leaving the corner completely empty.
The heavy, static tension in the room broke. The team walked forward, stepping over the puddles to look at Raiden, who slowly lowered his hand, the residual sparks dancing playfully across his knuckles. He turned around to face his champions, a very rare, incredibly dry, and completely relaxed smile breaking across his face.
"He talks too much," Raiden said simply.
Jax let out a deep, rumbling laugh, shaking his head as his mechanical arms hissed to a resting stop. Cole took a long, deep breath, slipping Hanzo’s blade safely into his belt as the entire group naturally gravitated into a tight, unified circle in front of the thunder god.
"What happens next?" Cole asked, looking around at the bruised, blood-stained, but completely unbroken family they had built.
You stood next to Liu, your arms crossed over your chest as your analytical brain finally calculated your own internal physical reserves. The adrenaline high from the battle on the bridge was completely gone, leaving your stomach completely hollow and your baseline screaming for glucose.
"Whatever happens happens," you interjected, your voice completely flat and serious as you looked at the group. "But right now, I am absolutely starving. Personally, I would kill for a shawarma... or, honestly, considering what just happened on that bridge, I’ve already killed for a shawarma. I don't know. All I know is I want real food."
You quickly whipped your head around, pointing a warning finger directly at Liu Kang before he could even open his mouth. "And no, absolutely no traditional healing broths, Liu. Real. Food."
Liu Kang froze for a fraction of a second, his mouth half-open as he prepared to suggest an ancient Shaolin recovery tea. Seeing your fierce, food-deprived glare, he let out a bright, beautiful laugh that completely warmed the cold locker room. He lowered his hands, shaking his head in total, affectionate defeat.
Sonya Blade burst into a sharp, victorious laugh of her own, stepping up to bump her shoulder against yours. "I am one hundred percent with the doctor on this one. If I have to look at another ancient scroll before I get some grease in my system, I’m going to defect to Outworld. Let's get out of here."
Raiden’s smile softened, his glowing eyes reflecting a deep pride as he looked at the circle of protectors. "Today we are victorious," he spoke, his tone turning grounded and preparatory. "But there are other enemies to fight. We cannot let our guard down. Shang Tsung will return, and when he does, we must be ready. I will assemble a new list of champions. You must find them."
Cole wiped a smear of soot from his forehead, leaning in. "Who's first on the data sheet?"
Raiden’s smile turned highly amused, a mischievous spark in his eyes as he looked at the group. "How well do you like your movie stars?"
You let out a loud, dramatic, and completely uncharacteristic groan, rolling your eyes toward the ceiling. "Ugh... please tell me we aren't recruiting Hollywood."
The entire locker room erupted into a loud, shared round of genuine laughter. The absolute, heavy angst of the tournament completely washed away as the team gathered Cole's family, passing through Raiden’s final localized portal to return to the real world.
The small, neon-lit shawarma joint on the corner of the city street was practically empty, save for the massive, loud, and entirely bizarre group of individuals occupying the large center booth. The tables were absolutely buried under a catastrophic mountain of food, heaping platters of shaved meat, warm pita bread, garlic sauce, and mountains of fries.
It was a lovely, chaotic, and loud laughing time. The air was filled with the clinking of glasses and the highly animated retelling of tactical details as everyone compared how they fought and won their respective battles.
"I'm telling you," Jax boomed, gesturing wildly with a french fry gripped in his massive mechanical hand, "the look on Reiko’s face when my pistons engaged? Man thought he had the strongest baseline in the realms until I literally doubled my torque output. Cracked his ribs like dry twigs!"
"Oh, please," Sonya laughed, wiping garlic sauce from her lip. "Mileena tried to do some fancy vertical teleport trick on me in a three-foot-wide hallway. I didn't even have to move my heels. Just hit her with the sonic pulse and watched her bounce off the masonry like a pinball."
Cole leaned forward, his arm wrapped around Allison’s shoulders as he took a huge bite of his wrap. "Everyone fought great, but honestly, can we talk about the bridge? Because Raiden told me what happened before we got there. Liu, you literally manifested a thirty-foot fire dragon? And y/n was dropping geometric force fields like a sci-fi movie?"
"It was a highly coordinated execution strategy," you said around a mouthful of shawarma, pointing your pita bread at Cole. "Kabal’s velocity was entirely dependent on linear traction. Once Liu vaporized the anchor pillar, his speed dropped to zero. But honestly, everyone is hyping up our fight too much."
"Yeah, at first it sounded like the bridge took the win," you continued, setting your food down and leaning across the table with wide, animated eyes as you looked at the rest of the team. "But Cole’s fight with the actual spirit of Hanzo Hasashi against Sub-Zero? That absolutely takes the prize. You guys didn't see it from the portal baseline, Cole was literally deflecting absolute-zero cryo-blasts with a centuries-old broken blade, and then Hanzo’s literal ghost rose from the nether-grails with hellfire chains to melt a grandmaster cryomancer into actual ash! The sheer kinetic conversion of that fight was a one-in-a-million cosmic phenomenon!"
Cole blushed fiercely, ducking his head as Allison laughed and nudged him playfully. "Hey, don't look at me, the spirit did most of the heavy lifting!"
"Don't sell yourself short, champion," Jax chuckled, raising his glass. "You held the line."
Liu Kang sat quietly next to you, his dark hair still slightly damp from a quick post-fight wash, but his face was still completely clean of the soot from the bridge. He hadn't said much throughout the dinner, content to simply eat his food and watch the vibrant, noisy camaraderie of the family he had helped save.
He turned his head slowly, his warm amber eyes locking onto your face as you continued to passionately debate combat statistics with Sonya and Jax. A look of profound, unyielding love,a quiet gratitude to every single entity in the universe washed over his features. He reached under the table, his long, calloused fingers slipping smoothly into yours, locking his warm grip with yours. You paused mid-sentence, looking over at him with a soft smile, feeling the steady, loving spirit of his fire keeping you perfectly warm against the world.
