As noted in a previous post regarding “Svartedauen” (1900) by Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen, the figure of Pesta – the personification of the Black Death - plays a central role in the series of drawings. She is featured either carrying a rake or a broom. The rake means few will survive and the broom signals total death for the community. In the above image Hoest, from the Norwegian black metal band Taake, draws on this symbolism by Kittelsen to underscore the dark worldview of the band. Above CD: “Helnorsk Svartmetall”
