BRACES - MY EXPERIENCE + TIPS
So nowadays most people are getting or have had braces at some point in their life.
I had braces when I was 16-17 years old, so from the end of high school till my second year of college. It was an experience for me, some of it I enjoyed and some bits where just awful, and I wish I had some more knowledge before getting them.
That’s why I’m making this post, so if you have or are getting braces, feel free to read!
RESEARCH
Colours of bands: when it comes to choosing the colour of your braces there are a few things you need to know. Some bands can make your teeth appear more yellow and other bands can make your teeth appear whiter. Darker bands make your teeth look whiter, for example dark blue, black, grey and other darker colours. Lighter colours can make your teeth look more yellow for example, white, yellow, orange, lilac, baby pink, light blue etc. When I first had braces I picked a pale pink colour like the one above and it really didn’t suit me, after I experimented a bit I tended to stick to the darker colours like dark blue and silver.
The pain: When first getting braces you don’t think that they will cause too much pain right? But you couldn’t be more wrong! Make sure that on the day you get your braces you have painkillers with you all day. The pain might be bad for some and not so bad for others, but I would carry painkillers with you just in case! Every time you get them tightened they ache after for a few days, but like I said, it can be different for everyone. I could manage the aching without pain killers most of the time, but the last time I got them tightened was probably the worst, but it went away after a couple days. Cold food will sooth the aching a little, but I wouldn’t go biting into any apples or hard food the first couple of days because I can be pretty painful.
Foods to avoid:
Chewy foods like bagels, hard rolls and liquorice.
Crunchy foods like popcorn and ice.
Sticky foods like caramels and chewing gum.
Hard foods like nuts and hard pretzels.
Sugary foods like candy.
Foods you have to bite into like corn on the cob, apples and carrots.
AFTER BRACES
Once your braces are taken off (usually takes around 20- 30 minutes), they take another mould of your top and bottom teeth, these are for your permanent retainers you have to wear to keep your teeth from moving back to how they where before. For the first few months you’ll probably have to wear the retainers everyday and night (you have to take them out when you eat). But after a few months I used to wear mine just at night when I went to bed. The retainers look like mouth guards but they are clear and once they are in you can barely see them, they do give you a lisp but you get used to them after a few days of wearing them constantly!
I really hope this helps! And just remember your smile will be even more perfect than before :)
