I hope our daughters are born with so much fire in their souls, they could put volcanoes and stars to shame.

“ – eh, what good are we if we don’t give people’s the chance they deserve? It’s not a big deal. It’s the least we could do. ” Her smile was contagious – probably because he found it to be a cute sight – and he soon found himself smiling again, his anxious nerves relaxing just a bit.
A quick nonchalant shrug is tacked on as he kicked his foot against the ground. “ And just a secret between you and me … but he learned from the best. Me. I’m the true ladies man. They can’t resist a guy with personality. ” Of course … Crutchie couldn’t keep a straight face, soon laughing again.
It is a big deal. She isn’t sure if he’s aware of just how much of a big deal it was, letting her have the exclusive on the story. A girl who hadn’t as much as one hard hitting article, who was young and rash and just wanted to help-- they placed their trust in her, they counted on her ( ‘oh, you poor boys’ ). She couldn’t possibly thank them ( all of them ) enough for giving her a chance.
Brow raises, laughter rolling off her lips.
“Oh, is that so? And here I was thinking Jack was the big flirt. Don’t worry-- I won’t let on that I know the truth. Can’t hurt his ego, now can we?”

“ – I could’a told you that myself, Mi– … Katherine. Eh, you good with nicknames? ‘Cause it’s easier to call you Kath. ” There’s a laugh from the young male as he pushed his hat up a bit, nervously scratching his head a little. He had missed a lot while in the refuge – but the boys did just fine. Of course they would. They had each other. But something about being so out of the loop … was going to be weird. Jack was definitely going to tell him everything that happened before they turn in for the night.
“ And it’s was an’s honor to fight with you. You helped us a lot more than you think. We should’s be thankin’ you. A beautiful , smart girl came to our rescue. ”
“Kath. I like it.”
Small chuckle behind her words-- nicknames weren’t something she was used to ( having been named after her mother who had already claimed the shorthanded kate ), but she was quickly growing fond of the variations the boys had created. Brow raises, bright smile as the faintest bit of crimson tints her cheeks.
“You’ve picked up on Jack’s flattery, haven’t you. I was just doing what needed to be done-- power of the press. But you boys are the real power. Thank you-- for giving me a chance.”
“ – Your friend, Your best friend, Your BROTHER, Crutchie. ”

Carefully making his way to the reporter, he can’t help the wide grin that was forming. Katherine the pretty girl reporter was way more than what she looked – and man, he was grateful that she was there to help keep Jack’s head in the game. And he was even more grateful to be out of the Refuge. To get to be outside in the stuffy air. To get to have FOOD. Oh boy …
“ – miss’s Katherine? Man, I gotta thank ‘ya for helpin’ Jack out like that. You’re really somethin’. ”
Swept up in the moment ( the exhilaration of winning ), grin sweeping expression the moment she catches sight of the younger boy. She had only met him briefly, but hearing Jack talk so fondly ( and being so heartbroken about what had happened ) made her eager to get to know him-- to come out of a place like the refuge smiling, he must really be something.
“There’s-- no need for a miss. We’re all friends here. Katherine is just fine. I’m really glad to see you again.”
And suddenly bashful, clearing her throat as a quick hand moves to tuck auburn lock behind her ear.
“I, uh-- oh. It was-- an honor, really. To fight alongside you boys. And Jack, too. However hardheaded he may be.”
suchalcser :
“ – oh, yeah. ” He didn’t know why Katherine had pulled him to the side into one of the empty classrooms at first. But as soon as he heard ‘play’ he knew what this was about. He had to think of a good lie to cover up what happened – to keep the whole squip thing hidden. Rubbing his arm and not looking at her , he gave an awkward laugh.
“ What about it? ”
“You know what happened.”
Not even question, but a statement-- the moment she got her confirmation, she’s sure Michael will be able to tell her something she didn’t already know. Taking note of his behavior ( perhaps she was being a little insensitive, but there was a story she was determined to get to the bottom of ), step back to give him some space and losing the demanding edge to her tone.
“What on earth could cause six students and a teacher to just-- drop? Mr. Reyes isn’t known for being the most responsible teacher, but even I have trouble believing something like that could happen under his watch.”
Give those kids and me the brand new century, and watch what happens!
