Do you ever wonder if the reason that different cultures have such wildly different onomatopoeias for the noise a cat makes is that cats have regional accents?
Actually, they do.
There’s a lot of evidence that animals have regional accents. Both birds and sperm whales in fact to vocalise differently depending on where they grew up.
As for felines themselves, there’s an ongoing study underway on at Lund University precisely about this.
As a phonologist who has watched entirely too many cat videos on the internet, I can confirm that cats of differing countries do have differentiated accents in their cries. Felines in England tend to have shorter, lower “mow” whereas Japanese cats do tend to make glides into high vowels, and are sustained longer, such as the ubiqutous use of “nyaaaan” in Japanese onomatopoeia.
Hope this helps.
Guys This is because their vocalizations are targeted at humans. feral cats don’t vocalize with the same or at the same rate that house cats do. Even if they are brought in and live with humans for years most don’t give the distinctive meow you’d expect. Which with humans having so many different languages and those languages actually having different pitches they are commonly spoken at it’s not a surprise that onomatopoeia for cat sounds are so radically different. Because the cat is making a sound in attempt to get a particular type of human to pay attention to it. tl:dr - cat who live with humans have accents based on their human’s language. this is to get your attention.
Could you do a gif for each house with doctor who? But only using 11 please

If you aren’t at least a little ashamed of your country’s history, you don’t know your country’s history.
Penguins: clumsy but adorable.
i never wanted this to end
oh my god those are ROCKS the penguins are falling on ROCKS are you OKAY PENGUINS do you need WINGPADS OR SOME OTHER KIND OF SHOCK ABSORBING PROTECTIVE BODY GEAR
Fun fact, due to their flightlessness, penguins have actually extremely sturdy bones for birds. That plus their natural blubbery body makes them their own shock absorbers
All my life, I never knew I was a penguin

I hit reblog so fast there was a tsunami in the Pacific.
Carrie was an utter gift.
I normally don’t like to add to posts, but this is just one of my favorite things about her. I guess Carrie Fisher just carried glitter everywhere, because she did the same thing at Indiana Comic Con when she was there in 2015. She actually kinda got in trouble because she was taking so long with each person who came for autographs because she wanted to “baptize them” with her glitter. She wanted to make sure that everyone who saw her got some glitter.
tldr; she was truly a gift and i sobbed at work when i got a notification that she passed, and i’m crying now as i type this.
So what if we all picked a day and wore glitter for her?
Next May the 4th seems appropriate. Dedicate Star Wars day to the original princess?
LET’S DO IT!!
I am so on board with glitter for Carrie day.
She talked about how her therapist (I think it was in her book Shockaholic but I can’t check right now) always knew when she was having an ‘off’ time in her head depending on how much glitter she’d show up wearing to appointments. It was her way of making the world sparkle and shine even when it felt dark. It made her feel better. Evidently she wanted to share that with others.
I purposely went out and bought glittery body dust in her honor. I’m going to welcome in 2017 lit up like a firework. Ain’t none of y'all going to ever be able to hug me ever again without getting covered in glitter. It’s on. We’re doing this. And on May 4th we’re going to make the world shine.
For Carrie.
THIS IS SO FUCKING IMPORTAN

life finds a way
as I remember Carrie Fisher and what she gave to us, I’d also like to remember Vera Rubin, the astronomer who made dark matter a realistic theory, and also did a lot of outreach work to encourage young women to join STEM. she died today at 88. we lost Space Mom and Space Grandma, and i really hope that they both find their way among the stars.
