So here's a thing:

The ML writers are not "failing" when they write Adrien the way they do.

They are in fact, succeeding when they write Adrien the way they do.

In order for the ML writers to "fail" at writing Adrien, that would imply that Adrien's character concept is sending a message they don't agree with--

When in fact, Adrien is sending the exact message they want him to; 90% of their audience has fallen for their message hook, line, and sinker. If you can see Adrien's actions as being horrifying, you are an outlier, and the writers do not want you to count.

The Miraculous Ladybug Writers don't want us to look at Adrien's actions and see them as horrifying--

The Miraculous Ladybug Writers want us to listen to the music cues and see his puppy-dog eyes and sad flattened ears and they want us to 110% support Adrien's behavior, we're supposed to see Marienette's horrified expressions and protests and agree with Adrien-- that Marinette is "just playing hard to get", that if she just gave in and "gave him a chance" she would "admit her true feelings for him".

The Miraculous Ladybug Writers are 45 year old white men who've already admitted that they're fucking creeps that make a self-insert character (Tom) married to a sweet, demure, racist caricature of one of their coworkers, including her name without her having any say in the matter or even knowledge of it until it was already under production (Sabine).

These are 45 year old white men who are fetishizing and mystifying (?) Chinese culture for brownie points and then went and whitewashed their main character so they could sell more toys to a white audience, and then went onto completely disconnect her from her culture so the white boy can explain her culture to her.

Miraculous Ladybug has done exactly what they set out to do, and it's only because you're able to look past what you're told to see what you are shown that anyone in the fandom is able to realize just how fucked up Adrien's behavior is--

Because the writers are winning. They're doing exactly what they set out to do: there's a reason most of the fandom is genuinely convinced Adrien's never even done anything ever, and it takes hundreds of screenshots and gifs straight from the show before people even can begin to realize "hmm, maybe this sunshine child has... Done bad things? Hurt people?"

And then it takes even more examples and stories from real life victims of harassment like what Marienette faces before those same people finally stop scrambling for excuses and realize that Adrien's never going to change because he's never going to admit or even realize he's in the wrong, because the writers insist that he is right.

And that's exactly what they believe too. It's baked into the very core of the show.

Hi friends!

While the new episode (s2e5) has given us a lot of good content, I want to give a gentle reminder about a few things before we move forward.

What we’ve been given of Kagami so far has been a stereotype: she’s from a prestigious Asian (Japanese) family with stakes placed in honor and family name, and has an emphasis on a highly specialized skill. She has a cold demeanor and a design that looks like it’s about 2.5 changes away from Sabine (who is Chinese).

This is a western show with a majority of its audience coming from the west as well. Because of the way that Asian people are often portrayed in western media, it’s easy to fall into the same trap of thinking of stereotyped characters in the same ways.

I am not trying to hate on anyone’s headcanons or dictate the way people want to explore her character, however, I am warning y'all to be more conscious about how you think about her. Look to how you can round Kagami out and try to not let her fall even further into the already-sterotyped box that she has unfortunately been introduced in.

I saw someone on TV Tropes listed Kagami as having tsurime eyes (sharp-corned, slanted) opposite Marinette’s tarame ones (round-ish, kinda droopy at the ends).

Tsurime symbolizes strong will, arrogance, or pride in a character. […] and is commonly an attribute of Tsunderes, Kuuderes and particularly Badass Action Girls.

and on tarame:

Typically, a Moe character will have those definitive, sympathy-magnet Puppy-Dog Eyes. It generally represents a kind, quiet, sad, fragile or otherwise soft person.

Which is fair, Kagami’s obviously meant to (double pun unintended) mirror and act as a foil to Marinette (and Adrien), but don’t take this at face value.

There is a HUGE difference between Japanese artists styling cool, defiant characters with slanted/squinty/sharp eyes, and non-Japanese (hell, not even monolid Asian) doing the same thing.

There is a REASON why your villains squint and look “shifty eyed” while your heroes are “wide eyed idealists” and your pretty girl/boy has “big blue eyes”.

“But Miraculous is a Japanese, Korean, and French production!”

Yeah, it’s animated in SKorea and Japan, but the character designs and the lore stuff are mostly from the French side of things. I don’t know who designed Kagami’s character, but in contrast to the other monolid Asian characters (Marinette, Sabine, Wang Cheng, Kim, arguably Mireille?), her design and background raises some red flags. 

You don’t have to write her off bc her design and character is “problematic”, I love her in fact, but keep in mind Miraculous is written very much from the perspective of France, and while France doesn’t speak English, it doesn’t stop them from being (however unintentionally) racist. Just try not to play the same game.

Unsure if Asian American stereotypes are carried over in France—I’m just assuming some will considering the Kung Food episode, that antiblack Ladybug comic, and the fact that Hollywood has a huge global presence—but I’m not too massively comfortable with Kagami’s cold, driven, challenging demeanor. (One translator said in response to losing to Adrien her response was “In my family there are no second chances,” but I don’t speak French so I can’t confirm.) It’s really reflective of stereotypes that Asians are are somewhat robotic, driven only by success and high achievements. And the whole samurai design for her akuma? The fact that the character on her ring was literally the character for “girl” which is basic and lazy? Would those aspects have been SO EXAGGERATED had she not been the only Japanese character? I doubt it.

There’s a shit load of Asian stereotypes and anti-Asian racism in this show and I’d say Marinette is only given the well-rounded personality and cute design she has is because, well, she has White heritage on her dad’s side. Sabine’s design is fucking awful. Slanted eyes? The qipao (with the flap on the wrong side)? Nobody wears those anymore except during specific Chinese events, t-shirts exist in China, and the only reason you would ever incorporate those into a design is to accentuate how foreign and not a part of France they are.

Don’t get me started on Kung Food and how utterly condescending and ugly it is that Adrien (a White boy) would know more about Chinese culture than Marinette, who is ACTUALLY CHINESE. And I know there are plenty of diasporic Chinese who don’t know how to speak it or know very little about their own culture, but if you’re to write a character like that, you need to address why. You need to address that we’re coerced into forgetting parts of our heritage because racism and the pressure of cultural assimilation. You especially do not glorify White people for knowing more about Chinese culture than actual Chinese people. You want an excuse for Marinette and Adrien to hang out? Find another idea. You can write two seasons’ worth of them.

If I’m missing something specific about anti-Asian French racism or there’s context I need, Asian French people are totally welcome to correct me btw. (Seriously if you’re not Asian don’t bother.)

Kung Food and Sabine’s design have been things that super rubbed me the wrong way ever since I saw them, Kung Food especially bothered me as a mixed race Japanese American (whoes had to deal with many a weeaboo over the years) I found it extremely disrespectful to Marinette as a character and overall I am very uncomfortable with the way Adrien has interacted with Asian culture in the show. (even though I love him)

I’ve never been able to put it into words in an easily understandable way before but you did it so well this is such a great response!

Man, I love how good of a protagonist Marinette is. I love how relatable and talented and kind she is. I think ML has a really good protagonist and her story has struck so many chords in me, I'm glad it's being told.

I love how Adrien is really integral to the plot implicitly but Marinette is relevant to the plot because she made every decision that ultimately led to her being the protagonist. It speaks wonders about her strength of character and the agency she's been given, which makes her such a good role model for little girls.

I also think it's really cool that Adrien is so fundamentally linked to this story because he doesn't have a choice. Narrative wise, I think that was a good decision, especially given how much of his character is about not having agency and learning to reclaim it. The way they've told the story, where they've actually demonstrated that Adrien lacks agency over a long period of time rather than just telling us, has been really emotionally impactful, and I think making him the deuteragonist was the right choice because it also doesn't cast a whole lot of spotlight on him, which makes sense because he's been struggling with too much spotlight rather than not enough for 4 seasons now.

Since someone decided to bitch about the show in the tags of this post as though this was at all the place to do that:

I think the show has done really well with making the characters flawed but good despite that. Time after time, Marinette and Adrien both make mistakes, but they learn and grow and understand why those mistakes were mistakes in the first place. Given that they're dealing with superheroes, it gives a very clear message: a hero isn't someone who does things perfectly, but someone who leaves the world in a better state than they found it. Things are always better by the end of each episode in a tangible way, even if the conflict is overall worse than it started.

The characters are heroes because of how hard they try, not how good they do, and that is a fantastic message that has led to fantastic characterization, even for Marinette.

Maybe some long thread about how cryptic conversation starters only ever scared him and ended both of his relationships—only to follow up with silence in the face of a couple of likes, or a reply from a sort-of-stranger that would debilitate him, remind him of his own vulnerability, more than it would reassure him. Hell, maybe even a message to Bubbles about how he was right all along that he’d need the luck. Or how Bubbles was right about how he really was in for it the moment he stepped into the bakery.

It’s just that, with the way Marinette Dupain-Cheng is looking at him on her balcony—all sad, scared softness—he gets the feeling that he’s not meant to repeat whatever she tells him.

Luka steels himself, loosens his death grip on the neck of the guitar, and releases a breath he doesn’t want to hold onto anymore. “Yeah,” he says. “Anything.” It comes out choked from how tight his vocal cords are. The way they get sometimes when he plugs in the microphone and hits RECORD.

She pats the floor in front of her and mumbles something about being on equal ground, and he slides down to meet her, guitar in tow. She looks like she wants to touch it, feel now real it is. Or how real he is. As though that moment with his card wasn’t enough.

“It’s about your sister,” she says, her gaze darting away in shame. “And Adrien. Sort of.”

“Okay,” he says. It’s slow, and uncertain, but he hopes it tells her he’s all ears.
