FOCUS ON: InCity shopping centre/mall

A short bus or taxi trip into town from our campus is the InCity shopping centre, housing a huge range of international and local shops and restaurants.  Although there's plenty of choice when it comes to eating at InCity, one of the stand-out choices is Grandma's Home, which serves tasty and well-priced Ningbonese specialities. It's always packed so arrive before 5pm or well after 7pm to avoid the queues. 

InCity also has a good cinema that plays international films in original version with Chinese subtitles, an arcade area and Vanguard, a good quality supermarket.

The three presidents of Nottingham’s Students’ Unions/Association - from the UK, China and Malaysia respectively - got together recently for an international student summit held here at UNNC.

The event, which saw students from around the world come together for debates and cultural exchange, marked the first time student representatives from the three campuses have worked together on this scale.

Luyi Yang, president of the UNNC Students’ Union, called the event a “milestone for the Nottingham family”.

Our student street dance society, the Shuffle Crew, will be performing at our Open Day on Sunday. 

They’ll be just one of the countless student societies we have at UNNC that will be out and about at the Open Day.

A group of our students have started a campaign to persuade Jack Ma, one of China's richest and most successful entrepreneurs, to visit our campus. Their ambitious request centres on the idea that Ma, who is the founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, and UNNC are both leaders in their field!

Mature student Joseph Healy, who is studying MA Contemporary Chinese Studies, left a successful career in international banking to study at UNNC. He describes why he chose to become a student again and how his fifth masters degree is setting him up for an interesting future.

FOCUS ON: Central Business District

A 20 minute walk from campus, the Central Business District (CBD) area of the city has bars, restaurants and coffee shops (Starbucks and Costa) in a pleasant riverside setting. 

Due to it being a business hub for the Yinzhou district, the area is at its most busy during the day, with office workers taking advantage of the food options. But, at night the modern skyscrapers and office blocks are beautifully lit up and it can make for a pleasant place to grab a bite or have a drink on an evening.  Along with a number of convenience stores and banks, there's also a gym that many staff and students use. The area also has houses the nearest McDonald's to campus, for those looking for their burger fix!

Hard to imagine that this is how down town Ningbo would have once looked (the photo shows Tianfeng Pagoda, which is still standing, sometime in the early 1900s).

If you're interested in historical photos, we have a public talk taking place on Friday 6 March with Professor Robert Bickers, who will talk about Bristol University's Historical Photographs of China project, which this photo is courtesy of.

The project has located, digitised and published online 9,000 historic photographs of China, forming a fascinating glimpse into China's past.

The weather might still be a little gloomy here in Ningbo but spring is definitely on its way, if the trees on campus are anything to go by!

2015 is the year of the 羊 yáng, which means sheep, goat or ram in Chinese. 

The University is closed for a couple of weeks during which staff and students alike head home to see family or off on holiday for a Spring Festival rest.

When I tell people that I transferred campuses, their first question is always ‘why?’ 

When Louise Lasfer arrived at UNNC from the UK Campus it was meant to be a one-year exchange. So what motivated her to transfer her course and finish her degree here in China, rather than return to the UK?

The first in a series of posts focussing on different areas around Ningbo and our campus. Firstly...

FOCUS ON: Sunday Plaza

Our campus is right next door to an area of shops and restaurants called Sunday Plaza, which offers our staff and students a wide variety of food options at very reasonable prices. Along with a host of Chinese foods (noodles, hot pot, North-eastern and Szechuan etc), there's also a Korean-style place, a shop selling Australian pies and a KFC! And Sunday Plaza is not just great for eating, there's also a Bank of China branch with excellent English-speaking staff as well as a few little bars tucked away down the area's side streets.

Colleagues in our sports teams have been busy over the last few months refurbishing our gym, as well as the outdoor basketball courts and grass football pitch.

It may be chilly outside but now there's no excuse not to work up a sweat!
