MOVIE REVIEW: A WALK TO REMEMBER

The movie, although predictable, still touched the hearts of its audience.

Nicholas Sparks is known to have certain deaths pertaining his characters in his stories. This is the reason why we already know that someone is going to die in this movie. There's no element of surprise. However, Sparks still lived up to his name. With all the cliche that’s happening, he still managed to play with our emotions through the use of his characters.

The selection of actors was also good. The character of Landon Carter is shown as someone who has a bad boy image. Shane West was certainly a good choice for Landon. West has sharp facial features that made him look like a mysterious looking guy which is very appropriate for his character. Landon’s counterpart, Jamie Sullivan was portrayed by Mandy Moore. The actress managed to pull off an innocent image which is very fitting for her role. In addition with her image is her angelic voice, making her a good choice for Jamie's character.

As for the sound effects, it was fitting for the high school feel the story wants to show. Also, the movie’s main soundtrack, Only Hope, managed to gather a lot of attention and helped in advertising the movie. The song played a great part in one of the scenes in the movie, and it also helped the audience connect with Jamie’s character. Thus, the sounds was okay.

The setting was also proper. The main characters were teenagers, therefore the school setting was definitely a good choice. The use of old cars and clothes was also fitting for the story did not happen in the present.

Despite the story’s predictability, it still touched the hearts of its audience because of the amazing job the actors and staff did in creating the movie.

And the sad truth that I try so hard to deny

Is that no one cared

No one ever tried to ask me if I needed help

We are all going to die someday. That was clearly the message of the poem, It is Funny, You Will Be Dead Someday by E.E Cummings. He is basically talking about death and probably global violence, but with a twist. He did the poem in a more comical way. Maybe he thinks of death as something humorous and that we shouldn’t see it as a huge thing but rather as just another simple event.

The poem depicted death as something simple and lighthearted. Everything that we are doing now, or what we did in the past, it all doesn’t matter. Why? We are all going to die. It’s an event that we need to accept for it is inevitable. Nothing will matter in the end.

As I have said, the poem was done in a comical way. Thus, its delivery is more in the witty and amusing side. The poem also has a lot of adjectives in it—making it more imaginable and overall an excellent poem.

I chose this poem for I am afraid of death. This piece served as a realization, not only for me, but for all of us. That we must always be prepared. Death is a natural occurrence and we must not be terrified of facing such.

Think Before You Act

Footnote to Youth and When I was One and Twenty are wonderful literary pieces that subtly depicts the challenges and mistakes a person is capable of doing. Both pieces focus on regret, guilt, and the problems someone usually encounters when they are still young and naive. In Footnote to Youth, Dodong felt guilty in the end for not being able to stop his son from marrying. The feeling of guilt is clearly shown in Dodong’s thoughts, that he regrets not stopping his son. The poem When I was One and Twenty also clearly states the persona’s regret regarding his mistakes when he was still youthful and immature. That’s the common thing between them. They both focus on the consequences of our mistakes and the negative attributes of life.

I do not agree with the quotation “History repeats itself.” I believe everyone of us has the ability to control the path we want to take and each individual has their own mindset regarding things. However, I do agree with the fact that when we are young, we tend to make the wrong decisions. Let’s take the persona in When I was One and Twenty as an example. He was innocent and naive in the past. He doesn’t know how the world works. Because of that, regret comes in the future and we often feel guilty about it. He needs to think first before he acts. He should have followed the wise man’s advice. Dodong should have also done the same. In doing so, he shouldn’t have suffered the consequences of his wrong decisions. That’s the good thing about these pieces. We can relate with the characters very easily. Both pieces serve as a realization pertaining to our decisions in life.

We, however, need to acknowledge our past and learn from it.

A Means of Escape

Physician assisted suicide is wrong morally, medically, and politically. It's a wrong move for there is a great change in human values. From a society that regards human life as sacred, death is definitely a means of escape.

Your right to die undermines my right to life.

The value and pleasures of life can still be experienced even if one is paralyzed or suffers from any severe impairment. Just think of Stephen Hawking who made a lot of contributions in the world of Science despite his disability.

There should be no qualification of Euthanasia. It gives the right to take another person’s life. No one has the right to take the life of another. How can anybody, the court, the lawyers, or the doctors decide the fate of someone’s life? No one is qualified to make such decision.

It will also redefine the law of medical professionals. Doctors are there to save lives and not assist suicide. That’s why 90% of doctors who specialized in palliative care has showed their continuous opposition to such a move.

Abused role of doctors, flaws in its legislation, and giving up on life are cons of Euthanasia. This is the way I say keep assisted suicide illegal.

I felt very moved after I read the whole essay. To tell you honestly, I am not a charitable person, nor do I have the time to care for people because I know have my own share of problems. However, the author, made me think that this is a global crisis and we are all considered factors of such problem. That yes, we need to help them for it's not their fault they're experiencing hunger troubles. It's all the natural disasters’s fault (yes, blame it all on the catastrophes!) according the one famous woman the author chose to represent his idea with. He showed facts to support his way of persuading, which had been an important element of his blandishment.

I agree with what the author said. One reason I approved was because of his example quote by a well-known woman who stated, “natural disasters such as severe droughts, earthquakes, and tropical storms, and the disruption they cause to agriculture and food distribution, contribute to the hunger crisis. Drought, for example, is now the single most common cause of acute food shortages in the world. Women, who account for up to 80 percent of the world's farmers, are hit doubly hard: first by the loss of sustenance; second by the loss of income through which they can purchase food from alternative supplies.” It is a proven fact that catastrophes are a great factor of human starvation. Facts about the population and its statistics were also stated to further support his idea. Such conviction is truly helpful when one wants to persuade people into believing him or her.

Materialistic Culture: History Repeats Itself

History repeats itself. It tells us that the present truly is a representation of the past. The controversy about the Rizal monument with the construction of a 49-story condominium is not a new issue. Controversies pertaining to the monument were already present a long time ago. One issue is the construction of a national library and a national museum around the shrine in 1950. Another is the installment of a steel pylon on the granite obelisk that drew attention to itself rather than the monument of Rizal. These problems continue to appear yet boosts our confidence in fighting for the integrity of a historical structure. This is the main reason why we argue and disagree.

We continue to complain about the numerous projects that stands about however we often forget that we are also the ones who create such ideas. Certainly, the battle is all about us. We fight for the integrity of a monument who’s host— Jose Rizal, even opposed the idea of creating one. We tend to forget that we should respect the the people around us. The people fight for the monument’s right yet we disrespect the people around us by belittling them and their ideas for the improvement of a historical place. How embarrassing. We must learn how to value the ideas of other people and balance the pros and cons of their projects. We must learn to consider and to analyze each problem to avoid repetition in the future.

I’ve dwelled in a world of black and white – so plain and bland. Living in it is like wandering through a desert having no water and food for miles – but that’s until you walked into my life. You were the streaming colors that brought meaning to existence. Like an oasis, symbolizing hope to wretched men in a cruel desert. I think I shall never see a sight as captivating and alluring as you. You give me a glimpse of paradise. Nothing on earth could compare to your beauty. You are like the break of dawn – so majestic and peaceful, giving enlightenment to men’s soul. You are perfect in every aspect. Your skin so vitalized with a powder-white complexion that complements your eyes. Your hair, a field of wheat – so lush with such elegant curls like the calm waves of the ocean. It brushes perfectly over your smooth shoulders with no effort. Your nose like a perfect mountain cone. Oh how adorable when it wrinkles as you laugh. Your cheeks with that pinkish blush. Your gaze, passionate and meaningful, that one could tell a story in one look. You are my beautiful rose – but like any other, every rose has its thorn. That very beauty launched a thousand ships and caused many casualties. If the situation is weighed, it is foolish to get into war for you – but you got into our senses and blinded us. Like a months old baby, we could see nothing but the vibrant colors of your aura – and in that moment, I ultimately knew, we were bewitched. Every time we see you, we forget reason – our heads were filled with delusion that we instantly feel passion and courage to fight for you. A JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF TREASURES

Imagine walking through a path of statues and pictures that can take you back to historic times. Imagine a place so majestic that even the realms of magic (I still believe there’s one) will be put down to shame. Imagine picturing yourself in a large portrait full of grandeur and amazing architecture. Well, that will be possible inside the holy walls of Greece.

Greece is an example of a living masterpiece. One would definitely doubt that it had been made by the Greek gods themselves. Of course, the place itself isn’t the only treasure the Greeks have. It has its magnificent history, together with its stories, traditions, and facts. Also, who would forget the famous Greek gods and goddesses? Greece is a place full of wonder and curiosity. A true beauty witnessed by my very own eyes.

The Greeks are known for their literature. They are one of the very firsts to be known regarding their stories pertaining to mythology that ranges from gods to wars and victory. With their works, we are able to gather information concerning their lifestyle. There are a lot of stories that will certainly make us smile and some that can make us cringe in shame. However, this the main reason why they are one of the most well-known civilizations in the world obviously dubbing literature as one of their greatest treasures.

Another most treasured thing the Greeks have is their architecture. This is one of the main reasons why they are one of the most sought out destinations in the world. It is one of their greatest assets. It’s like walking through a Disney movie (like Hercules). You can feel the past emitting from the architectures, making you fall into a trance. You can imagine yourself being one of the Greeks.

You are missing three-fourths of your life if you haven’t visited the most glorious place in the world. A treasure one should definitely witness-- the beauty and the glory that was Greece.
