Thoughts: One of my favorite Hobbit fics is in included in this series & when I went to rec it, I realized there were two more parts! That’s always a lovely surprise. Even better, these two other parts are just as good as the first one, so double yay.

The dwarves have piercings - lots & lots of piercings - all over. Their nipples, their ears, their cocks even. Cocks play a central role in this series, if you couldn’t guess by the description :)

What I liked best about this is that it could have just been silly porn, with little else & I still would have liked it. But what I love about it is that there’s porn with affection, loving Thorin - a Thorin who promises Bilbo that he’ll spread him on the finest sheets in Erebor while they’re fucking in a cave. It’s romantic, okay?

Their relationship is mischievous & caring & regal. I love that dwarves & elves begin to pay Bilbo the same respects they do for the royal family, recognizing his place at the King’s side. Their private & public relationship is wonderful on both sides.

There’s also an amazing threesome with Dwalin in the second part, so you have that to look forward to!

Thoughts: This fic is set in a universe where all people are either subs or doms. Sherlock is a sub with all the recalcitrance of his dominant personality warring against his submissive instincts. He suppresses these urges until it becomes too much to take & Mycroft finds John Watson for him.

Right from the get-go, Sherlock knows that John was hired by his brother, but it’s a great skill of the author that you start to forget their initial relationship, just like Sherlock begins to forget that John is there by Mycroft’s hand. Their relationship develops wonderfully, slowly & with a subtle building of trust that they have to work so hard to maintain.

Sherlock is beautifully submissive when he actually lets himself go, learning that he’s never had a dom quite like John before. Nothing like John actually - John who wants to take care of him, who gains pleasure from Sherlock’s pleasure, someone who wants to stay with him & take care of him. Sherlock makes some very wrong-footed choices based on his experience with past doms which lead to some interesting conflicts between him & John that develop their s/d natures even further.

I just love how fleshed out everyone is, how in character they stay within these trappings. Yes, Sherlock is submissive, but he’s still wonderfully bull-headed, untrusting, and brilliant. John is not a whip-hand heavy dom - he’s steel & kindness, perfectly capturing John from canon.

Warnings: There are some unsafe BDSM practices that the author mentions would be terribly in a real-life scene, but it’s resolved.

The Hobbit: “Canoodling”

Summary: Every hobbit knows that dwarves are voracious lovers. So Bilbo can only assume that Thorin has just been waiting for the opportune time to thoroughly ravage his burglar, who is by no means inexperienced himself.

This would be news to Thorin, of course, since dwarves don't even feel desire until they fall in love.

This leads to a slight misunderstanding.

Thoughts: Such a sweet little fic! One of the things I love most in Tolkien fandom is cultural misunderstandings & boy, does Bilbo make some big assumptions in this one. I also love when Bilbo/hobbits in general are totally okay with being promiscuous & respectable at the same time. They’ve got a lot of spare time in the Shire, it’s totally in character for me.

Thorin was absolutely lovely in this, overwhelmed with feelings for Bilbo & not sure what they’re supposed to be getting up to when Bilbo leads them to a bedroom. It’s a neat idea that dwarves are demisexual & definitely fits with these characters. So there’s neat little bits of dwarven culture mixed together with some lovely sex :)

A fast little read with my favorite adventurers, read it on your lunch break or with breakfast to make your day go right <3

John is a saint struggling through his heats alone while the temptation of Alpha!Sherlock dangles in front of him. There are miscommunications between them as they’re kidnapped & John goes into heat, triggering every alpha that comes across him.

Sherlock is just as restrained as John, respecting what he thinks are John’s wishes in a moral dubious area. He does exactly the opposite of what John wants, so when the opportunity presents itself again, everything gets cleared up & they all go to bed happily :)

Summary: Sherlock is a werewolf who is captured by a facility which wants to experiment on him. When John is placed into his cage they expect Sherlock to attack him, but instead, he tries to mate with John.

Thoughts: Another repeat reader! I think about this fic a lot :)

It’s basically what it says in the title - a man & a beast! Sherlock is a werewolf locked up in a science lab for months with hoards of scientists poking him & basically trying to figure out how werewolves work. They throw a human in there with the hopes that Sherlock will kill her, but the werewolf doesn’t work that way.

When they throw in John, though... The wolf decides this is now his mate! Cue lots of amazing, unashamed sex. They’re in a clear booth but that’s not going to stop them from being naked & having sex as much as possible. To be clear, Sherlock has sex with him in human form, though the werewolf does a lot of scenting & licking after he gets John’s clothes off.

It’s a great possessive Sherlock fic, because of course he’s going to protect his mate, especially in such a dangerous environment. There’s nice elements of world building with Mycroft & the rest of Sherlock’s pack that are hinted at, but they’re filler for the main focus of John & Sherlock becoming mates. The author was working on a sequel from John’s POV, but sadly it seems to be abandoned :(

It’s pretty short, definitely readable in one go & always worthy of a repeat!

Thoughts: Continuing on with my favorite fics!

I’ve read this one several times & am enchanted each re-through. It has some of my favorite parts of fic - incredible world building, magic, arranged marriage, omegaverse - but it’s 100% non-tropey amazingness rolled up in a neat fic.

If you’re a reader like me, you might pause at the mpreg tag. I’ve heard it’s really rude to say ‘This is not normally my thing but...’ But honestly it’s not my thing haha - I don’t know how else to put it. I haven’t read any other mpreg fic besides this one & I don’t know what it was that made me decide to give this a chance. Perhaps the other elements mentioned that I love so much helped me move past something that would normally make me click away.

Looking at the pregnancy closer though - it’s amazingly told. Pregnancy IRL frightens the shit out of me & reading about John going through it here is brutal. It’s painful, he’s losing control of his body, he’s out of his depth. It strikes a chord with a lot of the things I feel about pregnancy personally & it captivated me to see John’s struggles with his situation. Having omegas be a stand in for women, showing the strength of being a child-bearer, it’s all topics that I had never really considered before I read this fic & it honestly changed some of the ways I view childbirth (not to sound hyperbolic, but fic can open your mind to many POVs!).

Sherlock is wonderfully characterized in this, though this is mainly John’s story. He’s possessive, but so gentle & caring, ready to fight to the death for his little family. Reading him grow into a king is so subtle & lovely, you almost don’t realize he’s done it until he’s making these burdened decisions & you’re surprised right alongside John.

Also of note, Mycroft is great in this too. In fact, the secondary characters all play really nice roles, but Mycroft is the cake-winner (ahh). He’s doting and protective but in a quieter way than Sherlock.

I don’t want to give too much of this one away because much of the joy is found in gathering all the details to yourself & just reveling in the world ladyflowdi builds for you. Put it on your favorites list!

Warnings: Mpreg, graphic depictions of violence, all the details of pregnancy, allusions to miscarriage, very violent birth scene, non-con, drugging, essentially slavery for John in the beginning

Sherlock: “The Taming of John Watson”

Thoughts: Since tags are not clear on FF.net, the author warns of triggering content before each chapter. It’s definitely advisable to heed them, as there’s some dark stuff in this fic.

More classics! This fic pinged in the back of my head while I was thinking about classic bottom!John fics (controversial, you don’t have to tell me). This is probably the bottom-est of bottom!Johns you’ll ever find in fandom (of course, if you have other recs, send them my way!).

It’s dark, as Sherlock essential forces a mostly-straight John into a sexual relationship, despite every protest that John has. He definitely protests, he resists, he tries to use safe words & Sherlock cuts him off at every pass, not forcing per say, but more like pushing John past his limitations until he has no air left to protest anymore. It’s manipulation out & out, plus Sherlock spends most of the first part of the fic not really caring that he’s taking John apart, just happy to take what he wants from the man.

It can seem a little OOC for John at times, but as the fic progresses & their relationship evens out, it becomes a little more apparent that John has his own decisions to make in regards to what he wants from a relationship with Sherlock. As Moriarty coaxes Sherlock to danger (with plenty of threats to John), Sherlock starts to realize what started as a game for him has turned into something with real emotional stakes. It’s great to read his transformation, as well as John’s, as they work towards having a stable relationship with very unconventional beginnings.

Bonus kudos: one of my absolute favorite scenes in a fic - John riding Sherlock in the back of a taxi while the cabbie watches. This fic has sex in nearly every chapter, all of it scorching, but that chapter takes every cake in the universe.

Shades of Sheriarty & outright MorMor are also in this fic.

Warnings: so many - the most dubious of dubcons, gore, heavy manipulation, Sherlock does a lot of Not Good things that he thinks is okay, noncon, drugging, forced voyeurism, violence

Sherlock: “Collared”

Summary: In a world where the British Empire is still strong and slavery is her economic backbone, John has become a terrorist for the abolitionist movement. One that will make even John learn to love being a slave.

Thoughts: HEED THE WARNINGS - This is a dark fic, not for the faint of heart. If the idea of slavery bothers you, or Sherlock being cruel, or John being hurt - best to skip this one.

So yes, one of my problematic tags is ‘slavery,’ which brings up all sorts of issues. Understand that I know it’s problematic, I’m not taking any of the views shared within this fic to my real life, & this is purely fiction.

Continuing one with classic Sherlock fic recs, I couldn’t believe I didn’t have one single fic by Velvetmace on here after nearly 200 posts. They’re not in the fandom anymore, but they left an impact with several outstanding fics & one sadly long abandoned masterpiece, Chamelon (last updated in 2012).

Like I said, this fic is a lot to handle. John is captured mid-terrorist plot & quickly embedded with an internal slave collar. It gives him pleasure when he obeys & great pain when he disobeys. He’s taken by Mycroft to be Sherlock’s first slave with very specific orders for John to be broken, etc. It’s a very strained atmosphere in 221B almost immediately.

The real stuff here is John’s defiance & moral compass, his passion & his fury. The author writes such a good John, not in the sense that he’s morally good all the time - he struggles with hurting innocent people to further his own agendas - but in the sense of a really well rounded & thought out John Watson. While Sherlock & Mycroft are great in this, it’s John who shines, who’s POV we get the most of.

& boy is he put through the paces. He’s jerked from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other in every chapter, not sure where he stands, keeping a tenuous grasp on his sense of self. It’s fascinating to read the mental anguish & struggle he goes through to still try & be John Watson at the end of the day. His Stockholm Syndrome with Sherlock is disturbing, but logical, even if we’re getting a tainted view from John’s perspective. By the end, you’re not really sure if they’re actually in love with each other or if it’s a product of their enforced circumstances, but you can take it however you want.

Bonus kudos for an incredible switching scene right in the middle of sex, holy cow. Well done *round of applause*

Thoughts: Such an interesting concept for a story! Sherlock is a Prophet who cannot speak in a way normal people can understand him. He needs John as his interpreter, who tells his Messages - the prophecies he can see & feel.

They’re teenagers in this - John is more hopeful than his adult counterpart, I feel. Sherlock is much more fatalistic. He hasn’t had the chance to get over a drug addiction, to really feel what solving crimes can do for him. They’re both in great need of each other as they’re loners, able to understand each other perfectly.

John’s devotion is so fervent and dedicated to making sure Sherlock’s prophecy about his own death doesn’t come true, it makes your heart hurt a little. It also makes for many obstacles between the boys, one believing he’s going to die & the other steadfastly working against it.

Sherlock is also asexual in this fic, though there’s one scene of an adult nature in this. I’ve left the rating as mature instead of explicit like the author labeled as I don’t feel like it’s any focus of the fic. It’s centered more around the intimacy of the growing relationship between the two than any discussion or action on sex.

I also just really loved the expression through Sherlock’s violin. His apology songs, or his birthday concertos for John - they’re a lovely touch that’s been done in fic before, but they’re different in this context since Sherlock’s words so rarely say what he actually means.

So very not good, the non-lizard part of John's brain was saying -- the enlightened 21st Century, reconstructed Alpha part, the part that supported Omega contra-heat, equality, pro-choice, the Omega rape legislation and general gender liberation. The part that knew Sherlock did not, obviously did not, want to copulate with him and certainly did not want to bond.

Thoughts: It’s been a while since I read Omegaverse - I was actually searching the AO3 tags for ‘switching’ as I in that kind of mood today. I realized I’ve read this one before, but had forgotten about it & it was the perfect time to read it again :)

It’s a pretty standard O-verse fic with the setup: John comes home to find Sherlock in heat because he didn’t feel the need to tell his Alpha roomie he was an Omega. What sets this one apart is poor John’s struggle - he literally handcuffs himself to the stairwell to try & get away from Sherlock, rather than fucking him without his consent. It brings some refreshingly 21st century concepts (like contraceptives, morning after pills, pro-choice, etc) into a universe that usually ignores all that.

It makes the progression of their relationship all the sweeter. There’s no imbalance between them & even though it takes them a while to get on the same page, they end up there eventually & give us a happy ending. With lots of switching! Hooray!

Warnings: questions about dubious consent, but it’s all cleared up.

Sherlock: “Evidence of Human Life”

Ah, the mixed feelings of Evidence of Human Life. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is about this fic, but it’s something unique for sure. It’s not a happy fic - Sherlock jumps into the ocean after John falls overboard in a storm. They end up on an island for six weeks & Sherlock handles it less than well.

What interests me about this is the way the author describes Sherlock’s descent into madness. It makes me feel helpless every time I read this fic, knowing that the great brain of his is just tearing itself to pieces like an overheated engine. The primal elements of his & John’s relationship (such as it is) feels like his brain stripping itself down to the bare elements just to keep sane.

The sex is rough & dubious, certainly in the beginning. We’re not ever given John’s perspective on the island, so you’re not sure as a reader what makes him agree to sex in the first place. It might be because he knows it’ll keep Sherlock saner for that much longer, but at what cost to John?

I love the resolution of this fic - Sherlock nearly losing his fucking mind at just being back in civilization, the way John doesn’t handle civilization very well either. They’re both fucked up, but it ends on a hopeful note, one that says they’re going to be okay (after a time). It’s dark, but worth it for the exploration of these characters in an extreme situation, written with talent & precision.

Sherlock: “The Stars Move Still”

Thoughts: Continuing in the vein of reccing my older favorites, here’s one from BF! As with other BF fic, it’s a wonderful long haul, so grab a drink & settle in.

The seed for this came from a prompt: “Faust: Sherlock sells his soul,” which the author turned into an amazing premise, creating a world that’s completely unique with familiar characters. To say this is a ‘world-building’ fic is almost an injustice - there’s so much going on! The way BF describes magic in a visual sense, then with physical sensations, it’s a fucking delight. Wards, spells and different realms all coalesce easily to make this really interesting setting.

The main climax of the fic hits in the second chapter & I was reading it so quickly, it felt like an action sequence in a movie. There’s a lot of action packed into many moments of the fic & the author gives you a great sense of dread & danger with satisfying consequences & outcomes. The boys are put in real peril throughout & it keeps you on edge as you read through their struggles.

It has such a unique coming together of John & Sherlock, especially with the role of souls in this fic. I don’t want to give too much away, but BF makes such a compelling plot for these two to be together & it’s beautiful. Even better is the epilogue where there are doubts, but fears are allayed.

You know with BF that you’re going to get wonderful detail & some of the best plots in the fandom. This fic doesn’t disappoint at all & you’ll have a new favorite once you’re through <3

Sherlock: “The Great Sex Olympics of 221B”

He comes up with an experiment plan that will resolve the issue. The results will determine who wins the prize. But sometimes even the best thought-out scientific study has unexpected consequences.

Thoughts: I was shocked to find I didn’t already have a rec for this! I’m thinking about going back & rec’ing my old favorites, like this one. There’s so much fic out there that it takes something really special to make me read a fic twice. I’ve read this one five or six times!

2012 was a really good year for Sherlock fic, like a Golden Age I would honestly say. This fic was right at the top of that list of great works to come from that year & it remains a steadfast favorite for so many reasons. The competition is so silly as to be completely believable between these two idiots: who can have sex better? Let’s use science to find out!!

The premise is simple, but there’s so much more to it than the setup. The author plays it so perfectly, so completely real that you’re completely sucked into the seriousness they lend to each encounter. Of course, they’re sexually repressed idiots as well, so there’s juicy UST between John & Sherlock (despite all the sex going on). The build-up to them recognizing what they want from each other is still one of the most perfect structures in a fic that I’ve read. It’s incredible & subtle between them, each having their own crisis, until you look up & they’re completely done for!

I seriously don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t read this one. Treat yourself to a classic!

Captain America: “4 Minute Window”

Summary: "Look, if they catch me," Bucky muttered, "they're either going to kill me or they're going to put me in a box with a little window and—Steve, I can't."

Thoughts: Such a lovely fic! Security around Steve has always been close, but after they know the Winter Soldier is coming for him, security cinches even closer. If Steve goes missing for longer than a 4 minute window, swat team level security descends on the area. This makes it hard for Bucky to have a conversation with him.

I loved the way the author wrote their small meetings - in an elevator, on a jog. They’re clever ways to have them meet & really made me feel the sense of urgency they have in those brief encounters. There’s a pre-established relationship between Steve & Bucky that makes the idea of them missing each other for so long so bittersweet. Desperate kisses are heightened as they have such a short amount of time to see each other under constant surveillance.

Steve’s relationships with everyone else is nuanced and well thought out. Natasha really cares for him, in a different way than Tony tries to take care of him. The author really nails the characterization of the secondary characters and makes me feel sympathetic to them even when they’re trying to obstruct Steve & Bucky.

Perhaps my favorite part was Peggy. It’s interesting to see her in her old age & how the author writes dementia. She plays the sweetest role in this that made my heart really sad, but also full of happiness that she got to see Steve again at all. Her relationship in the past with Bucky & Steve compromising between the three of them is also something I’d really like to read more of - there’s more parts to this series that I haven’t read yet, so perhaps it is.

Summary: As with any organization, the Resistance found it necessary to produce training holovids on a variety of topics, from basic demonstrations of the use of important equipment to more nuanced vids on cultural or personnel issues. They were a small force, but tended to be somewhat geographically scattered by necessity, and it saved a lot of time to have a small collection of introductory holovids to show new recruits to get them quickly up to speed.

The most entertaining holovid, however, was widely held to be this one.

Thoughts: Short but hilarious fic about the elephant in the room - absolutely everyone and everything has a crush on Poe Dameron. He’s going to be distracting no matter what, so the Resistance had to give new recruits some information to arm themselves against, well, themselves.

Genuinely funny, I laughed aloud at several bits. Good for a pick-me-up & to remind yourself just how damn handsome Poe Dameron continues to be.

Thoughts: God bless america - this is hands down one of the best fics I’ve ever read. There’s so much of it (120K) that you’ll want to read it all in one sitting, then there’s just more of it. Get cozy, it’s worth the trek.

Alexander is so perfectly realized in this modern setting - he’s troubled, he’s coming up from the bottom, he’s so brilliantly ambitious & perfect that you want to smack him a bit when he over steps his boundaries. I felt like I was reading an A. Ham written by LMM, so wonderfully characterized was this version of him.

I’m new to Hamil-fic, so I had never honestly considered him with Washington before, but this fic takes their relationship to such amazing places that I’m not sure I can see him with anyone else (okay, no there’s lots of room for Eliza still). There’s a slowly introduced daddy kink element that becomes a key component of their relationship, but then it’s almost an afterthought as they develop into something so much more. Like genuine love & delight between them even as they struggle with scandals & secrets & figuring each other out.

That’s maybe my favorite part - them figuring each other out. Don’t get me wrong; all the politics & subterfuge are wonderfully plotted out & just as interesting to read. But all my favorite parts came from the moments of vulnerability on both sides of Alex & Washington’s interactions. Not only is it intimate & extremely hot, but it felt so realistic that I wanted this to exist, I wanted some version of them to be a reality. It’s incredible. Enjoy this one!
