August 11, 2017, Brooklyn, NY – The following statement was released today by NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan and Deputy Commissioner Hayley Moore:
As we prepare for another great season of women’s hockey, we wanted to extend our best wishes to all of the former NWHL players who will be playing in China as part of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
We will miss them in the NWHL, but the larger mission for all of us is to make our game more popular and accessible across the world. We believe that what’s good for women’s hockey is good for all of us – even if that means saying goodbye to some of our favorite players and people.
The players leaving for China are making a major commitment to their craft and to growing the game. For that, they have our deepest appreciation. We will be rooting for them.
We want to thank Kelli Stack, along with all the other players with agreements in China that have not been officially introduced yet, for everything they did for us in our first two seasons. They will always be part of the NWHL.

I hate to keep pushing this, but it's heartbreaking to have your kid ask 'any donations yet?' and watch her face crumple when the answer is still no. Even a dollar will help. Really.

I made a GoFundMe campaign for a backyard practice rink for Daria but I’m too embarrassed to share it anywhere. She really needs a space for her to practice but I hate asking for money for any reason.

The husband signed off on the idea so here's the link. If you feel compelled to help, that's amazing. But I understand if you can't or won't, no hard feelings.

My priorities are so screwed up. I spent money at the used equipment sale but yet I'm balking at the price of resuming Daria's participation in house league. For the record it's $439 per season and that doesn't include the gas for three months' worth of weekends (which I might add is an hour each way, so I'm looking at half a tank every weekend they play). That adds up. Part of the reason I'm hesitant is that Daria's commitment level is lacking. She doesn't have a good way to practice at home and we're looking at installing a practice area but what we want is going to run into the thousands. (It's expensive to pour concrete and then there's the synthetic ice surface to consider.) And, well, there's a training facility in Nashville but it's also an hour away and those fees will add up as well. $25 to rent a half hour's worth of time on a shooting lane, and because we don't live in Nashville we can only manage once a week. It's not really a good option when it comes down to it. So put all that together and you have a kid that just doesn't want to practice because it's just too difficult. There's a scholarship option for league but we missed the deadline on that, never mind we didn't have the requirements to apply (she needed a letter from a teacher at school and school hadn't started yet). They don't give season ticket holder discounts anymore and that 15% helped. I'd crowdfund but you know, screwed up priorities. I could have spent that money on my kid but most of me doesn't want to commit because of her lack of enthusiasm. Why should I spend someone else's money if she's not going to give it her all?

Here are some of the goodies we came away with at the Preds used equipment sale. Not pictured is a few Play-Dry t-shirts for my husband and the Forsberg stick I procured for my younger brother. Unfortunately, the bag, Pekka’s glove, and the Stepan locker nameplate aren’t mine, they were purchased for someone else.
I’m pleased with what we purchased, though I thought I’d grabbed a Johansen stick and am irritated that I was mistaken. I’m also kicking myself for not thinking to get an Ekholm stick. That way I could have had the whole JOFA line and the Big 4 D. There were so many goodies and only 15 mins to collect them, and I spent a little too much time trying to track down things that weren’t for me. We weren’t finished when people started coming in and my husband hurried us out the door when that happened, so that didn’t help.
Along that vein, I have to say I feel incredibly blessed because even though I was the one to win a golden ticket, my husband got to come in with me because there were no-shows. I didn’t ask if he could come in when I checked in but I did mention he had come with me, and that knowledge was enough for the offer to be extended when spots opened up. But, I’m glad that I blacked out the info on where to meet because no, they didn’t check IDs, they just asked for my name and marked it off. Anyone could have come in saying they were me.
I wish I’d thought to take a picture of the whole floor before shopping, goodies untouched. It was a bit magical, all that equipment waiting for homes. All said and done I’m glad and grateful I was afforded the opportunity.
I have this extra Pekka Rinne game used stick that I bought for someone I used to be friends with but she quietly dropped me with no warning some time back, and I have no idea why or when it happened. I’ve been trying to get her a stick for two years (two separate equipment sales where they sold before I got there) and with the golden ticket I was finally able to accomplish that. I felt like I needed to purchase it to fulfill the request. Pretty sure she wouldn’t be receptive to me reaching out to inform her I got it though, and I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to find a foothold to become friends again. So now I have this stick and it feels like it belongs to her yet it doesn’t. I don’t know what to do. I need closure but I don't think I'm going to get it.
I have tried to write at least four posts about my finds at the equipment sale and Tumblr has eaten all of them, grrrrrrr. What a load of garbage.
