I’m like. Ever so slightly concerned about the responses I’m seeing to Knights of Guinevere. Which feels silly because these aren’t even responses I necessarily disagree with. But it feels odd idk how to describe it.

People keep hyping up the fact that Dana Terrace is free from Disney’s clutches and gets to make something with her proper vision, which is definitely good. But I worry that in doing so we’re gonna end up reducing this to JUST a spite project when that’s clearly not what it is. Like believe me, I fucking loved Owl House and its fate still makes me sad. But I feel like it would be a disservice to Dana to define her solely as a victim of Disney executives.

And it feels silly because like. This project is OBVIOUSLY a commentary on Disney and it’s one of the only things we really know About it. So like yeah I get why that’s what the current discussion is like. I guess I just hope when we actually get proper episodes we can talk about the merits of it as its own Thing rather than just a middle finger to Disney.

I keep thinking about it and I believe one of the first genderqueer characters I ever saw in media was Haruhi's Dad from Ouran Highschool Host Club.

And I am so glad that it was him.

It was a great way to explain why Haruhi didn't give a fuck about genders most of the time and although his character has a few flaws, I am really grateful that they portrayed him like they did. Which was basically, "that's my Dad, yeah he works at a gay bar and dresses up as a women, but what actually makes him weird is that he's worried about me to an overwhelming extent and he's very extroverted which I find annoying."

And I have no idea how they handled it in other languages, but in the German dub (throughout the entire anime honestly) they use terms for lgbtq themes that are kind of viewed as "not okay to use" in today's society but they do it so well. There's just no real malice behind these words, it just is what it is, and I personally appreciate that a lot.

Not sure if this has been asked before-- but! Did you struggle coming up with a design for Jax? I see a lot of people seeming to have a similar consensus on how some of the others look (especially Pomni) but I've seen a lot of divide and struggle in the way Jax is portrayed as human.

I think I less struggled so much as I was just a bit nervous about how to go about it?

I think the difficulty with Jax in particular is that he has certain vibes and qualities to him that actually kinda contradict how he acts and chooses to present himself in ways which I admittedly feel a lot of people don't quite catch...?

Like... he's cocky and mean in ways that are very performative:

He acts like he doesn't care, yet it's obvious when things get to him, he's mean and makes targeted insults, yet he also clearly feels enough guilt to retroactively soften the blow when he can tell during his conflict with Pomni that he went too far...

He also deflects often and tends to project his own insecurities onto others - which is why I don't think his targeted bullying towards Gangle is coincidence at all either. He sees a lot of himself in her, all the sides of himself he hates and pretends don't exist... Liking "embarrassing" things, being openly vulnerable, indulging in happy fantasies...

So I knew I had to aim for some flavor of "by nature very much a loser and the primary type of person you'd pick on as a bully, but presents himself in aesthetic and fashion choices that signal the opposite"

He's a loser in shoddy sheep's clothing so to speak, so you can't take his attitude and self-aggrandizationt at face value...

And where the rabbit avatar's wide grin and simplistic design lends very easily to an almost convincing air of arrogance, I felt like as a human he had to fail a little bit at it lmao, so I had to give him a good balance of "cool" and "uncool" traits if that makes sense? The exact flavors I used are purely based on vibes tho

And idk, I feel like a lot of people either don't catch that he's really honestly kind of a loser or forget about it when designing him?

There's also that dissonance between people who go for a more personality based approach like me and people who focus more specifically on the visuals, converting the avatar's design into a human character aesthetic...

Not to mention the people who project comfort traits onto him that aren't necessarily in character (which is fine and valid, but still causes a clash of objective vs subjective mentality)

I too have certain design quirks and preferences that flow into my designs, that's kind of inevitable, but I do my best to stick to what actually feels in-character xD

Gem and Pearl are based on the Team Rocket Grunts from HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Grian is based on the Worker from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (mainly just for the pose lol)
