Got my wish of smoking in a building today, last day of the year

She walked into the room and could feel his empty presence distantly. Walking behind the couch, sneaking to the staircase, she heard him. “Where have you been?

“Work,” she relied. “I brought you a coffee cake, it’s in the kitchen.”

It took him a moment to reply. He was conflicted, as he is so often.

“Did you have a good day?”

“Yeah,” she complied immediately, “did you?”

“Just, sat on the couch all day like a fuckin bum”

He laughed his answer breathily, but neither of them were really amused. She giggled anyway.

I’m, uh, I’m gonna go see- Is it okay if I hang out with Viv for a little once I put my stuff away?” He changed the channel, preoccupied with his search for entertainment.

He landed on NCIS reruns.

“Did you do the dishwasher?”

They were both fully aware that she hadn’t. It hung heavily in the air as her throat tightened and heart picked up a faster pace.

“I’ll go do it right now.”
