whomst wants a brotzly drabble ~inspired~ by the lovely lovely clip we got yesterday?
This isnāt unusual. He spends a lot of time sitting on a bed these days, when heās trapped alone in his room with nothing to do but wait for the next experiment. But he doesnāt recognise this particular bed. Heās still in his jumpsuit, but the room is different. He doesnāt know how he got here. Itās still bland and white and the bed is still far from luxurious, but he thinks maybe he isnāt in Black Wing anymore. Giddy hope rushes through him.
He turns his head, and thereās Todd Brotzman, and he knows he isnāt in Black Wing now. Todd meets his gaze intently. Dirk would definitely like to get used to this happiness again.
Somewhere outside, music plays. āWhere are we?ā He tries to ask, but maybe he didnāt actually speak aloud or maybe Todd didnāt hear him, because he shows no sign of a response. Dirk doesnāt mind. Heās used to not getting answers, and heās too busy fighting back a grin to insist that he gets one this time.
He allows himself to shuffle along the bed, just a bit closer to Todd, smiling down at the floor. āI missed you,ā Todd says, and Dirk smiles wider. He watches his own legs swing, deliberately (but not obviously so) brushing a foot against Toddās.
Fingers lace with his. He looks, and finds Toddās hand resting atop his own. His giddiness melts into something calmer.
With his free hand, Dirk touches Toddās cheek. Todd doesnāt pull away. (Maybe that should have clued you in, a traitorous voice in his mind says, though clued him in to what he doesnāt know.) A beat of silence passes.
He had forgotten there was supposed to be music. He canāt hear it anymore.
He leans in and kisses Todd. Itās nothing heās ever felt before, and something that his time in Black Wing had him worried he would never feel. He tightens his grip on his hand. With his eyes closed, he canāt see Toddās response, but he does think he feels eyelashes fluttering against his cheeks, a soft breath against his lips. And then he thinks about it some more, and realises that maybe he didnāt feel those at all.
Itās when he pulls back after a few seconds ā to give Todd a chance to breathe, or to kiss him back, or to reject him maybe ā that he realises whatās wrong with this picture.
He squeezes his eyes shut tighter and leans his forehead against Toddās. āThis is a dream,ā He says, āIsnāt it?ā Itās something heās uttered so often recently that he doesnāt need an answer, but he phrases it as a question all the same, in the hopes that maybe this time heās wrong.
āIām sorry,ā Todd replies. Dirk strokes his thumb over his cheek, tries to pull him closer, savour the moment before he disappears like he always does.
His eyes open and heās staring not at Todd but at the ceiling of his cell. There are people at his door again. They always interrupt his dreams about Todd. Almost every morning.
He resigns himself to Black Wing once again.
