Moving Raccoon City exposed Leon to a world of vast hopes and dreams. Prior to the transition, he desired to mature into a strong, dutiful protector from boyish naivety. There was no such figure in his own life, so he swore that day of completing police academy to be one for others.
To say Leon enjoyed his new life in a city was an understatement. He loved it. Raccoon City was practically a labyrinth due to the various alleyways, streets, skyscrapers, and god awful traffic. Although, the sight completely contrasted his rural life consisting of one Main Street, and continuous forests with backroads.
He liked the traffic congestion because it exhibited the busy lives of working people like him. The simplicity of just people trying to make the most of everyday amidst an ever-changing world fascinated him. Leon held a great sense of pluck to do good. All he has ever wanted was to do right for those who have been wronged.
Currently, he was making his way to the precinct for another day’s work. With some time to spare, he possibly had the chance to grab a quick morning bite. Leon normally waited for his lunch break to dine, then cook a light dinner back home. Breakfast had to be skipped because of morning patrol and paperwork he needed to finish previous nights ago. He’d somewhat gotten better, which is why he rewarded himself the chance to enter one of Raccoon City’s most renowned bakeries.
His coworkers and other chains of command raved about one in particular, since they had many celebrations for their team. The crew had a knack for hosting going-away, retirement, or welcome parties. Leon first tried treats from that specific bakery at his very own first day welcome. The cupcakes were so magnificent, he couldn't even remember just how many he ate.
Thereon, Leon desperately needed a legitimate reason to go back and now was the time.
The Pretty Patisserie, as people called it. The bakery was quaint; placed next to a few other department stores and restaurants on the walking strip. Its exterior had a white-brick wall, with arched windows in the very front. Each of them held a window basket, containing a wide variety of pink peonies, purple petunias, and white lilies. The flowers danced with each other as a color splash, fitting the theme of the bakery’s shop sign in lavender. Its cursive lettering was elegantly scripted and presented for the general public.
Leon parked in the nearest space, downplaying his own excitement. His eyes sparkled just at the sight of croissants, donuts, and petit-fours being displayed from the windows. They were all carefully crafted and baked with intent. From the outside alone, he had fallen in love with the space. The rookie cop wasn’t ashamed to admit his guilty pleasure for sweets, anyone in the department knew how passionate he could be.
Just as Leon took a step inside, his senses were hazed in sweet, buttery aromas. The relaxed atmosphere made it seem he was on a cloud, sailing carelessly on a pillowy bliss. He closed his eyes, settling on the fact that if his last death wish was to eat here, he’d make sure.
“Excuse me, are you in line?” A hoarse voice broke Leon immediately out of his daze, spooking him in the process. He blinked to see an elderly man with his mouth scrunched in impatience.
Geez, old man. He thought to himself before replying with haste, “I’m so sorry sir, I'm still deciding.”
“You oughta decide quicker, ‘cuz everything is good and goes fast,” the older individual smirked and turned away with a crooked gait. Leon watched as he ordered with ease like a seasoned regular, gathering his purchases smugly. He shot Leon a knowing glare, and exited in one go. Leon had to give it to the old prick, everything looked amazing.
Figuring it was his turn, he moved up to the counter while eyeing the other sweets in its display case. His eyes darted to the vast selections of fritters, moving ahead to crullers and danishes.
Leon marveled at the opposite ends exhibiting cakes and pies. They belonged in a museum with their picture-perfect presentation. Glorious indeed.
“Do you need help with anything?”
And then Leon thought his morning couldn’t have gotten any better.
He saw a young woman, dressed in a pink buttoned-up top rolled to her elbows, and blue capris that accentuated her stature. She wore a brown apron with the bakery’s logo embroidered on the front. Her hair consisted of tightly coiled, curls pulled back, allowing a full frame of her visage to invade Leon’s view. Her facial features were positioned altogether perfectly as a cohesive piece of art itself. A graceful smile etched upon her pouty lips, with the morning glow casting on her brown skin. She was a divine blessing, eyelashes fluttering like wings of an angel.
You had to be why pretty was in the name of this place.
Leon froze at her appearance, fighting off the warmth in his cheeks and ears. He was so entranced, he hadn't even heard your next words.
“Hello?” Her honeyed tone was a melody in Leon’s ears, the octaves played as notes carrying along a chord.
“H-Hi, I–uh…was wondering what are your recommendations….for this morning?” Leon stumbled over his words, feeling as if his tongue fell out his mouth. He cleared his throat to fix his composure, but failed wonderfully. The internal cringe set in.
She held a puzzled expression at his antics, her doe eyes examining his own cop uniform.
“You don’t want a donut?” The woman eyed him with a raised eyebrow, lips pursed in a line. Her eyes held mischief however.
Leon chortled loudly in the shop, bringing attention to himself with stares from other customers and workers. He acknowledged the concerned glances, feeling his smile fall.
He directed his eyes back to you, taking a hint at the small smirk you attempted to hide.
“That was a funny one…hah,” Leon dryly muttered in awkwardness, “Well, I want to try the best of the best. My colleagues have told me about this place.”
“Y’all buy out everything, so anything really,” you pointed, “but if you want something light for this morning, I suggest my turnovers.”
You could turn me over. He quipped in his head.
“Your turnovers? This is your place?” He pondered.
“Yep. All of these are my goods, I bake ‘em. Aside from the help of my employees, of course. I’m not conceited,” you slyly grinned, and shifted your direction to lead Leon down the case.
The turnovers you suggested were ornately, golden pastries that came in a plethora of flavors. The fillings included cherry, apple, peach, berry, and even pear.
“Everyone picks cherry and berry, but to each’s own,” you thoroughly explained as Leon watched you gesture.
“What do you like though? I wanna know your favorites,” Leon beamed at the twinkle in your eyes as he questioned your taste.
“Well...I'd say apple and peach. One’s a classic and the other gives you a taste of home,” you couldn’t help the smile forming, as well as the tug at your heart. He was a cute little charmer, despite making a fool of himself 5 minutes ago.
“Then I’ll get those two,” Leon shrugged, fighting the urge to match your expression.
“Comin’ right up. You want anything to drink?” You diligently grabbed a pair of gloves and sauntered over to grab a pair of tongs under the counter.
“I’m good. Unless you wanna pick for me?” Leon smoothly replied, until you waved him off.
“Come back again. Maybe I’ll tell you,” you packaged his two turnovers in a small pink box and placed it near the register to swiftly tie a ribbon for extra care. You patiently watched Leon finish paying, taking in his own looks without being caught.
For him, he knew he had to take the open invite because would definitely be back.
“Yes ma’am,” he mockingly saluted, at which you rolled your eyes in amusement.
“Have a great rest of your day, see you soon….?” You looked at him, hoping to receive a name.

Over the next few months, your bond with Leon certainly has gotten closer.
He obviously came back and became a recurring customer like he promised, and learned your name in the process (beautiful like you). He just had to see you again because of your expertise at baking! Definitely not the growing crush he had on you (it was). You were smart, witty, and so funny that he could spend all day dreaming about you.
Leon started to put more effort in his assignments and patrollings, just so he could be able to swing by your bakery. His coworkers noticed him every other morning, strutting into the lobby and greeting everyone with a signature pink box in his hands.
He was lovesick, and people could tell. Even his lieutenant, Marvin Branagh, had to burst his bubble.
“Rookie, wipe that smile off your face. You look too happy to work today,” Marvin playfully scolded him, shaking his head as Leon sat across from him in the break room.
“Trust me, it’s not just about work,” Leon chuckled, opening today’s box of dessert from you.
You recently wanted to add a new addition to the menu, a salted-caramel chai cake with brown sugar frosting. Your employees all believed it would be a best-seller, though you wanted opinions from someone else. Leon mainly.
He forced his way into your life as a common presence, and you weren’t mad at it. If anything, Leon made you feel giddy. Whenever he came through those doors, you made sure to study the way his footsteps fell or receive silent nudges from your workers. You couldn’t help how much your stomach fluttered and the random bouts of shyness when he asked about your day.
Leon was infatuated with every little part of you, but now he dealt with his interrogations.
Marvin raised his eyebrows with an incredulous stare, “Not work related? Who’s the lady?”
The young man’s face flooded with pink, keeping his focus on the box of cake before him. “It’s nobody,” Leon murmured, hiding his embarrassment.
“Nah, it’s somebody. How’d you get so much of those sweets lately? You got something goin’ on with that baker girl down the street?” Marvin pressed harder like he was investigating a witness.
Leon coughed, trying to ignore Marvin’s persistence. He returned his attention to the cake that you wanted him to try, and began to start eating. Just one bit in, and he felt his tastebuds explode. It was dangerously delicious. Leon could practically moan out loud if his higher-up wasn’t right near him. The cake was moist, and the sweet-salty mix welcomed the caramelized notes, along with rich spices of clove and nutmeg from the chai.
“I guess I’ll leave you and that cake alone. If the girl got you like that, you need to tell her,” Martin ushered from Leon, shaking his head at the younger cop.
He didn’t even notice that the lieutenant left, too enamored by your new creation. People were gonna love you for it and in this moment, Leon knew he loved you.

For a couple of weeks, work became chaotic for you. Orders were being placed repeatedly ever since you started a pick-up service and released new menus. Ultimately, you were swamped. It was great revenue for your booming business, but it was a lot to handle on your own.
Having a self-owned and Black-owned business was a flex itself, and you strived to be a self-sufficient businesswoman. You started selling desserts back in high school and college, promoting yourself through friends until you officially formulated your career plans. By settling your finances and making big girl decisions, everything was established for your path to success.
You felt that your biggest accomplishment was being able to share your gifts with others. It allowed you to connect, build clientele, and make a name for yourself in Raccoon City.
You couldn't be more grateful for all the support and people you met.
He was the highlight of your mornings and late afternoons with his relentless sense of hope, charisma, and kindness. You anticipated his returns often, wondering what story he had to share about his adrenaline fueled profession.
You were drawn to his unpredictable nature, more importantly his heart. Leon carried more than he let on. He was someone who did things for others without any questions. A man who wore his heart on his sleeve.
The realization came when you found yourself stress baking, in hopes to let him try all of your creations. You wanted him around, and to always drop by with that unwavering smile.
Today, you expected Leon bright and early. You speculated what he would order, since he switched to different items quickly. He never had a usual, for he claimed that whatever you make are all of his favorites. You had to know exactly what he liked from The Pretty Patisserie due to the fact that everyone had their top choices.
You waited diligently, wiping down counters and helping newly hires adjust to the climate. Periodically, you discreetly stared at the doors, hoping to see that rookie cop. No sign.
Morning converted into brunch period, where rush hour hits the worst. Thoughts of Leon drifted to the back of your mind, as you embraced the endless crowd. Work fully distracted you from his lacking presence.
Amongst the congregation, he was no show.
Then, brunch drifted into the afternoon. Leon notoriously used his break period to entertain you at this hour sometimes. Still nothing.
Your bakery closed at a later hour, and Leon didn’t arrive yet. You felt a frown fix on your lips once the closing time loomed near. Sales have been made for the day, goods were packaged and ordered. Everything was set on another day at the bakery. Although, it wasn't the same without him.
Your employees long clocked out from their shifts, casting apologetic glances your way to which you only waved off with a sad smile. You were left alone, tidying the place for the next workday.
You silently swept to the soft blaring from your radio, drowning into your own thoughts. Leon couldn’t have possibly gotten hurt, otherwise you’d hear a breaking news headline now. He didn’t up and leave because he loved the city too much. Was it you?
Were you too overbearing?
Maybe he didn’t like just how hardworking you were, apparently some guys feel that way.
Just as you started to theorize another possibility, a sound knock jolted you to reality. It came from your favored arched windows, where the man you fretted over stood outside. Leon’s face was weary, a tired smile etched on his lips. He walked towards the door, hoping you’d let him inside to which you already prompted to do.
With a few hasty locks, Leon stood before you.
“Hi,” he whispered. His hair was unruly, face flushed pink from what seemed like a hard jog over here. He was worn out, huffing slightly and perspiring.
“Well hi, stranger,” you replied before giggling at his appearance.
His chest swelled at your laughter, walking inside as you obliged him to enter. His eyes remained on you attentively, marveling at your current state.
Your hair was slicked back with precision, save for a few baby hairs protruding. A streak of flour was dusted on your nose, drawing attention to your radiant skin. Leon stifled a snicker, and gently poked your nose to smudge it off.
You squinted at him when your brows furrowed in irritation.
“Boy, what are you doing?”
“You had something on your face! That’s all, (Name),” he raised his hands in surrender and moved to lean against the display with nearly empty options. “How was the rush today? I got tied up with a debrief.”
“It was fine as always, we sold out of cookies real quick. I did save you some though,” you dusted your hands off your apron, moving to the back of the shop.
That all stopped when Leon caught your wrist.
You turned to make a rebuttal, until you saw the solemn expression on his face.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t here today, don’t be mad at me please,” he pleaded quietly, taking your hand in his.
You were astonished by his gentle tone, though your insides lurched in surprise.
“I could never. You're my prized customer,” you rubbed his palm, smiling softly to which he mirrored.
“Yeah?” His eyes brightened.
“Of course, even though you're the only one who doesn’t have a favorite,” you rolled your eyes.
“Says who?” Leon smirked, stepping closer, “last time I checked, I do.”
“It’s a secret! But, I guess I’ll tell you,” he sighed shakily.
“You’re creeping me out, man,” you eyed Leon sheepishly until he grabbed your other hand.
“(Name), I’ve gotten to know you for those past months and I’m glad to have met someone like you,” he started, causing your breath to hitch.
“You’re gorgeous, talented, and so generous…what’s there not to like about you? What I’m saying is… you’re why I’m here. I go through all the trouble to see you for your character, not just your amazing, godly skills,” he breathed.
Your eyes couldn’t stop crinkling from how hard you were cheesing, the constant praise and appreciation made you weak in the knees.
“I like you a lot, and I wanted to…know if you feel the same?” He winced slightly at the lack of response, shivering lightly as his veins pulsed in fear.
In an instant, you trapped in him a tight squeeze of an embrace. Clearly, all the work from mixing, stirring, beating, and lifting paid off. a
All the air was sucked out of his body from the hug, and he wrapped his arms around you. You planted kisses all over his face, hoping he received your answer.
Leon laughed softly, swooning from all the affection and kissed your forehead, “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“It’s a hell yes!” you teased him lightly, swiftly skipping over to a box of cookies you cast aside for Leon in a cupboard.
There were many types that Leon’s mouth watered at the sight. From strawberry cheesecake, to double chocolate with chunks of fudge. All of them were selections that sold out earlier, and to think he had them all to himself for free? His love for you grew in unspeakable levels.
“(Name), you didn’t,” he said in awe, grinning like a kid in a candy store.
“I did and I can only thank you, Leon. I finally found my secret ingredient,” you paraded in front of him, taking him in another hold.
“What’s that?” He bashfully asked, meeting your longing gaze.
