Anybody noticed how, in MoE, Aurora introduces Diaval as simply "This is Diaval", with no additional explanations to who he actually is? No "Diaval, Maleficent's servant", or "Diaval, Maleficent's advisor"", or "Diaval, her trusted ally", or "Diaval, my adoptive father/friend/caregiver/anything". It's as if they deliberately left it open to interpretation.

Considering that they walked side by side into that infamous dinner (and not with him behind her, as a servant would), that he literally shooed away that poor servant (pity it's so incospicuous; you really have to look and listen closely to notice that) and that he sat next to her right as an equal, my filthy maleval mind wants to believe that this is a tease for us shippers to interpret it as them being a couple (but stopping just short of making it official, so that the non-maleval folks can interpret it in their way, too).

SOMETHING I NOTICED

Almost always, Diaval is on Maleficent's right. (Like a right hand man?) Observe:

First meeting. Technically she's circling him but she's looking to her right.

Then there's the scene when Maleficent causes the storm inside the cottage... and the deleted extension of that scene when Diaval asks about revoking the curse.

Side bar: they definitely should have kept that scene. It was still when Aurora was relatively young and it shows that Diaval wasn't afraid to question or contradict her.

Then there's the two of them watching Aurora at the wall of thorns.

"Bring them to me."

Then there's the scene where Diaval suggests Philip could break the curse (and Maleficent just crushes him by saying true love doesn't exist)

BUT THEN!!!

When Maleficent regains her wings, he seems to shift to being predominantly on her left. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but it's almost as if that shift is to recognize that they are equals? I mean...

And it continues into MoE when Aurora and her goth parents are walking to Ulstead and when Maleficent is presented at the royal dinner...

And when their precious pastel daughter gets married

I mean, there are some moments in the first film when he isn't on her right (mostly during the castle scenes after Aurora is cursed). But it just was something I noticed and couldn't get out of my head.

This is my favorite part of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Novelization. I love how Diaval is the only one who believes Maleficent is innocent. All the years they spent together made him realize his mistress is not a cruel being and she would never curse anyone ever again.

Honestly this interview has gave me hope that he'd fight for endgame Maleval if there were to be a Maleficent 3.

He felt the need to point it out twice that Diaval is so in love with his Mistress

Honestly though I find it so sweet that he knows that his character doesn't see Maleficent like the others might.

Diaval knows Maleficent may be prone to blow a fuse at times but will eventually calm down, so he understands why she was so hostile in the first movie— she had been hurt.

She wasn't always an "evil" fae.

He sees the good in her.

Even if the others don't.

In hindsight he gladly became Maleficent's wings because he had seen the pain she was in–

He took it upon himself to defend her reputation and honor that had been damaged by King Stefan to make sure it'll never happen again. While doing so it had caused him to fall in love with her as the time went on— seeing that she's not this big, scary, intimidating person she tries to make herself out to be.

But rather a broken soul with little faith left in humanity because of the pain they had caused her, which he's determined to help fix.

He's willing to fight for her till his last breath, not out of service, or fear— but love

Diaval's slight nod and smile upon hearing Maleficent's request to bring them to her.

Diaval following Maleficent into the castle, knowing fully well there'd be a chance they could die.

Diaval guarding himself over Maleficent to make sure nobody touches her.

This right here. His complete look of awe and utter adoration for both Maleficent and Aurora is all I need to believe.

Somewhere along the way he came to the conclusion that Maleficent and Aurora is all he'll ever need in life to be happy. He's content with the life he has now because of the two, he wouldn't want it any other way.

So fuck the cat.
