I know girls and women make up the majority of illiterate people worldwide, but do they make up for the majority of illiterate people in the US?
Denying girls an education is unfortunately not unheard of in the US, but it's usually not as extreme as banning them from learning to read entirely. It usually looks more like their Christian "homeschooling" being even more subpar than the already subpar "homeschooling" of their brothers. With rare, extreme exceptions, even the girls who are unfairly denied an education are taught reading, writing, and rithmetic.
And we know girls are outpacing boys in school in the US. Even when circumstances are against them, whether that be the pandemic or being pulled out of school to work or care for children, girls adapt better than boys on average.
So I'm just wondering. Without an outright ban on teaching girls to read, do boys and men make up the majority of the US's illiterate?

(What's that?) A letter. I wrote it to you when you were away at boarding school. I never sent it. Gossip Girl | 1.03 “Poison Ivy”
I’d been wanting to reread the HP books for a while and, what do you know, with the world going to shit I finally got around to it. And oh boy, did I fall in love with Ron Weasley all over again.
The movies sure ruined both his character and Hermione’s (and thus, their relationship) also JK Rowling didn’t help matters one bit, with her statements
Anyways, I still love them. I still love Ron. You won’t ruin this for me, Rowling.

My take on @toorumlk’s DTIYS 🤎
I don’t have very many people in my life who are in my life permanently forever. They will always be there for me. I will always be there for them, you know? There’s Rory, and Sookie, this town and… you. I mean, at least I think I’ve got- You do.
