This is what the first settlement of the Komi-Permyaks on this land looked like – the Kudymkar settlement (Krasnaya Gorka).
Kudyn kor," as the ancient settlement on the site of the town stood near the Kuva River, which translates from Komi as "kuv va" or "dead water," and the word "kar" in the Komi-Permyak language means "fortified settlement, city." Thus, the name "Kudym kar" translates from the Komi-Permyak language as "city near the Kuva River."
The settlement was first mentioned in written sources in 1579, but that wasn't the beginning of the history of the Komi-Permyak land. As early as the 7th–17th centuries, the log dwellings of the ancestors of the Komi-Permyaks stood behind a palisade on a 40-meter-high ledge on the left bank of the Kuva River. They hunted, farmed, and traded, primarily with the Bulgars. This favorable location not only served as protection from enemies but also allowed the ancient tribes to be closer to the Sun and their patron god, En.

The origins of Kudymkar date back to ancient times. On the high, 40-meter-high left bank of a pond formed by the confluence of the Kuva and Inva rivers, at a site known as Krasnaya Gorka, stands the Kudymkar settlement, dating from the 7th to 15th centuries. The southern part of the high cape drops almost vertically to the Kuva River, while to the west and east, its slopes descend steeply into ravines. The site is in critical condition, as the southern end of the cape is eroded by the waters of the town pond. It was first explored by A. E. Teploukhov in 1879. The thick cultural layer (up to 1.5 meters) contains the remains of above-ground log dwellings, hearths, storage pits, a large number of bones, ceramics, arrowheads, knives, spindle whorls, and other objects dating to the end of the Lomovatovskaya-Rodanovskaya cultures. In the northern part of the settlement there is a cemetery of baptized Komi-Permyaks, dating back to the 15th-17th centuries.
